  1. Too late now, but for reference to anyone else who wants to make something similar: I had an idea (it didn't even hurt)... You could start with a waterproof container (like tupperware) and then build the box to house the sealed container inside it. Sort of like a shipping crate for the waterproof container. 2. Return tomorrow with highway cones & just block off the RH lane for a few minutes. Hukt un fonix werkt fur mee
  3. I think I have to re login every 5 minutes or so (Seems by the time I get done reading the next thread, I have to log in again to reply to it.) Hukt un fonix werkt fur mee
  4. Here's an interesting idea (another msg thd) http://ubbx.Groundspeak.com/6/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=5726007311&f=4016058331&m=14760747&r=49960057 Hukt un fonix werkt fur mee
  5. Try this link: http://www.roadrunnersports.com/cgi-bin/rrs/rrs/rrSearchResults.jsp?catOID=-1073854792&BV_SessionID=@@@@0014538202.1060027808@@@@&BV_EngineID=gadciccelfjgbekgcgecfeedgg.0 If it doesn't work, go to the link below & look at women Trail Running/Walking Shoes. 6. You could varnish it inside & out w/ urethane (to protect the box itself) and then put the contents in a ziplock baggie (or two) inside of the box. Hukt un fonix werkt fur mee
  7. Have a look in this message thread too... There is a Magellan Sportrak Map for $99... It appears to have a lot more features: http://ubbx.Groundspeak.com/6/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=5726007311&f=2016058331&m=79060837 Hukt un fonix werkt fur mee
  8. This site (URL Below) doesn't speak highly of the Etrex, but I think maybe it's an old site, and judging by how many people here seem to like the Etrex, it may be inaccurate. http://gpsinformation.net/main/gpshiking.htm I would like to know which ones work best in the trees. 9. I have a Garmin GPS38, which is too old for me to compare with the Magellan SporTrak Pro that I just ordered (once I receive it), but I noticed at the URL below it didn't speak highly of the Etrex. (Dodging rotten tomatoes) It made me wonder about the website's accuracy, since so many here seem to like it. http://gpsinformation.net/main/gpshiking.htm BTW, I would love to meet with some of Y'all, and maybe spend some time cpmoaring units (GPS!) and maybe have a BBQ (I'll bring the BBQ & charcoal). I could meet & bring a BBQ to Banner Forest (It's across the Sound from Seattle). Maybe we can determine if Banner Nanner is still there... Hukt un fonix werkt fur mee
  10. Re: The above posts about the Magellan SporTrak Map & Pro for $99 & $129... IF THE GPS SALE SHOWS "sold out"... Try it again after a little while. I checked on the $129 one this morning, and it was sold out... then I tried it again a few minutes ago, and it was back in stock (So I ordered one before they showed up as gone again). This was the second time I saw it change to Sold Out and then back to available. I'm not sure if it's factory reconditioned or new... The website title says "Factory reconditioned items", but that may ba a universal title for all of their items. When I looked at the item details page, it doesn't have the factory reconditioned icon like some of their other items do, so it may be new. It's guaranteed, either way. I also found an online rebate coupon... https://www.magellangps.com/en/store/promotions/30_50_75.asp Hukt un fonix werkt fur mee
  11. I have to print this message thread and read it through (I'm only about 1/4 through it so far) so forgive me if this has been answered, but, Magellan uses "GeoCaching" in the description, and even in the URL of their contest (URL Below), Does anyone own rights to the term "GeoCaching"? Can they freely use it w/o copyright infringement? Here's the URL: https://www.magellangps.com/en/gpsAdventures/geocaching/ BTW, I just bought a SporTrak Pro for $129 w/ free shipping (online). (If you want the link I'll post it) Hukt un fonix werkt fur mee
  12. It's 4:00 & we just decided we'll go to Anderson Park to do Pecked & Stumped first. After that we may end up in Banner Forest to look for the other caches. I'll see you there or hear you on FRS Channel 2. [This message was edited by Mark 42 on August 04, 2003 at 12:57 PM.]
  13. (Sunday 03 August) If so, let me know and I'll meet y'all there. [This message was edited by Mark 42 on August 04, 2003 at 12:56 PM.]
  14. Not sure why it gave trouble. Did you use the </> button? If you were adding it into your tagline, then you are in uncharted territory, for me. I actually am new to this BBS software, but it has similarity to others I have used. But I am still familiarizing myself with it. Maybe just delete most of the messages and write up a summary of what you tried, what worked, and what didn't? I'm no guru or anything, I was just sorta curious why you didn't delete it after you found out what you wre looking for. Hukt un fonix werkt fur mee
  15. Can we hear from the Garmin users? Is this common? BTW, how do y'all like the Magellan Sportrak pro? I may be buyiong one since they're on sale for $129. Why do so few GPS receivers have a jack for an external antenna? On the drifting readouts: You may want to look up a good description of the difference between precision and accuracy. (I'll give it a shot). Essentially, you can have a precision of .001 feet and still be of by 100 yards. You can have an accuracy of .001 ft, even though you machine reads in units of 10's of feet. Precision is how many decimal places a measuring device has on the readout. Accuracy is how far off of the perfect measurement it can be. A scale that reads .001 Oz. is high precision, but it can be off by half a pound if it's out of calibration. So the precision would be .001 Oz and the accuracy would be only +/- 8 OZ. My theory for the fluctuation: The error on a gps will allow what is displayed values to fluctuate a bit because the readout's precision is greater than the unit's accuracy. 16. I think you can delete these posts. I'll delete this one if it is all that remains (if I remember to check back... you can email me if you want me to delete it.) Hukt un fonix werkt fur mee

  18. Ziplock bags, in case the one the logbook is in is getting beatup & leaking. A grocery bag to pack out trash. A black trash bag in case the one the cache is in has gotten holey. Gaiters. Ivy Blocker if you live around poison Oak or Ivy. After Bite (pain reliever for stings) A bee sting kit if you're allergic. A .44 Magnum if you are in Fla. or Alaska. I.D. in case the police ask what the heck you're doing. Also emergency info (I use a dogtag on a lanyard around my neck) such as blood type, who to contact, your name, drug allergies. Cell phone if you have one. Beer. Hukt un fonix werkt fur mee
  19. It asks for the date of the find on the Log page. I'm planning to start keeping track in my running log (I'm training for Seattle Marathon) since I will often be combining caching with my training runs. Hukt un fonix werkt fur mee

  21. When you hover your mouse pointer over the "My Cache Page" button on the mainpage, the picture that comes up is of a kid with a big glass jar. Maybe that sends the wrong message about glass containers (I was going to comment before I saw this message thread) Someone good at Photoshop could change the container to a more appropriate one but still leave the same kid in the picture so no one's feelings get hurt. If the label were available as a waterproof sticker it'd be cool. Maybe I'll make up a jpeg and post it for all to use. I'd like a bumper sticker like this: That way if another cacher sees my car, he can say hi & possibly we can work together to find the cache (if that's why we're there). BTW... nice tagline. 22. I went to one that was a half gallon insulated water jug (see picture below) It seemed well suited to the task. You could probably get cheap containers at garage sales & thrift stores. The clear plastic containers that mixed nuts come in from Costco look good. Was with dtergent & bleach, spray with a scent mask (like DEET mosquito repellant or even WD-40) & wipe out (but leave just a miniscule film of the de-scent). Most carnivores won't be attracted by the scent of nuts anyway (which may save geocachers from animal attacks). If you do ammo cans (or even other items) alot, you could make up a stencil and put lettering on the outside which gives info on what it is so that it won't be mistaken for a bomb. Could even give contact information on the lid so they can call you or email you for more info. You can buy empty 1 Gal paint cans at home depot, and an opener, and solder a piece of chain to the can (so you don't drill a hole) to tie the opener to the can. Coffee cans would be viable if there were a way to keep the lid on. Anyway, I'll keep thinking & come back here with more ideas. Probably will just go to hardware stores & department stores & thrift stores and meander through the isles with my creative thinking cap on to see what jumps off the shelf at me as a good candidate container. 23. Maybe the system could use provisions for logging maintenance & return visits & such. I may go back to Tott I Taw a Putty Tatt to replace the outer bag (it's wholly holey. but not holy, so I will replace the bag with similar type & color). I'll be returning there so my wife & kids can find it, and may give them hints if they get stumped just so they can gain the practice. My wife will log it, but I can see situations where I will be jogging by it a few times a week, and if I see that no one has found it for awhile, I can check & report status. Maybe the system should have provisions for "General Notes" where you report a visit but don't get credit for it as a find. I can still go back & edit my find entry since it is a recent one. 24. Well, got number 2 today in Anderson Park Would have done #3, but ran out of time. Saw the site for it, but will have to return to look around for Pecked & Stumped. Beautiful walk, though arduous uphill if you are not used to walking. Lots of STINGING NETTLES. Hukt un fonix werkt fur mee
  25. On the laziness topic: I'd suggest (I'm new, but I do have ideas) that it might be better to put an empty full size cache (with only a logbook) if you don't have time to find items to put inside of it. I would probably do this, and then make the fact that it is only a container and logbbok clear in the description. If people wanted to begin stocking it as they find it, it might make for an interesting cache (sort of a trinket gathering exercise). A quick coat of bright colored paint, or a bright colored ribbon whitinh 5 feet of a micro cache could be helpful, if noted in the description. I'm going to start carrying bright ribbons so that I can replace ribbons where they were included in the description, if I find they are missing (thought about doing this forthe " I TOT I TAW A PUTTY TAT " cache.
