  1. Anyone have any suggestions/opinions on the Garmin 18, which is just for laptops (or PDAs, etc) and the nRoute software that comes with it? Supposedly, it's just for road/highway travel. thanks ron
  2. Hey all Thanks for all of the great responses. You really overwhelmed me with choices... Are any of you familiar with the Garmin 18, which is the GPSr for laptops? and also, the nRoute software? Any comments? Is this a complete system?...in other words, does the unit come with software that is ready to download on your laptop and use when you are on the highway? thanks ron
  3. ok... I found Google Earth. What does the too m8 mean?
  4. I will be getting a laptop for Xmas (wife says I've been good ) and I need some help on hooking laptop to my Garmin Venture. I have the cable but I think I also need some mapping software on my laptop?? I assume any mapping software will do? I'm open to suggestions on what mapping software anyone recommends. Please keep answers sort of 'low-tech'....I'm still learning this 'stuff'. Or, do I need to go somewhere else to find out? Thanks
  5. I'm pretty sure we all agree that if someone want to sell a GPS, they are speaking of their receiver unit and NOT the Global Positioning System.. "We don't need no stinkin r"... Put me down as being against the 'r'...
  6. What difference does it make how 'other' discussion forums act/react. I would think most of 'us newbies' ask most of our questions in the 'Getting Started' forum (which I suppose is what it's for). A majority of the people who respond give good, friendly, informative replies.... If some of the 'dumb questions' that we ask, irritate some of the old timers, why do they go to the Getting Started forum? I would love to see what questions some of the old timers asked when they were newbies.. ok...I have on my flak jacket...bash away!!!!
  7. Gave my son my 12XL.. Have a Venture and a StreetPilot ColorMap. both, oldies...but goodies!!!
  8. We will have to be a 'Premium Member' to receive email notice of caches in our area???? ... (Boo....Hiss)..Looks like it won't be long before we will have to be a 'Premium Member' just to get to the forums...
  9. Seems as though you got a great deal on the price. I have one and I really like it...very versatile. Like most of the people here have already said, supposedly it isn't waterproof...so find you some type of cover/protector for it. I think you will enjoly it. Now get out there and do some 'caching'...!!!
  10. I guess this eliminates me from lurker status, by posting 2 times in one night???.. How do you get a picture (i think it is called an avatar) by your name?..Again, is that in another topic area? I promise, no more posts tonight..
  11. Hi...I suppose I am sort of a semi-lurker...whatever that means. I have posted a few times and usally had some very good answers to my questions. So, here's another question...what does it mean when you say you are 'pinning the topic'? Or should I go and see if there is a topic on geo terms?
  12. I assume swag is also the same thing as 'cache contents'? Or what? Is that the usual name geo-cachers use?
  13. Also, try a metal clothes hanger and bend it so it will hold your GPSr. Use the ends of it to stick into your a/c vent to hold it in place. Experiment and see what shapes work best for your vehicle and GPS unit. It should not be a problem with power cords either since you are shaping it yourself. I put duct tape( or electrical tape) on mine to prevent any possible scratching of the display screen and vents. How's that for being 'frugal'?...
  14. ok...thanks Miss Jenn...my Warn % is 0...guess that means that I play 'nice'
  15. Thanks NJ Admin..... I just archived it with an explanation as to why I did. I hope it works.
  16. Why is there a Warn % by my post? Am I doing something wrong?
  17. Along the same lines, how do I delete a cache? I have had problems with the cache being destroyed and or pilfered on 2 different occasions. I tried going to the 'edit cache' menu, but not sure if that is the way to do it??? Anyone with any helpful suggestions? Thanks
  18. Just to update all who replied to my question about the 'low memory battery...I emailed Garmin and they said send them the unit and they will replace the battery and install current updates (best of all...it was free ). Just got the unit back...good as a new one. Garmin really stands by their products. Thanks to all who replied.
  19. Thanks pater47. I agree, I will upgrade instead of having it serviced. How long did the cigarette adapter solution last you? I am trying it now.
  20. I looked on the Garmin site and they recommend you either install new batteries and leave GPS unit off for 5 days, or connect cigarette adapter and leave hooked up for 3 days.Supposedly, that will give sufficient charge to the internal battery. I'll try one of those.
  21. Thanks Eeyore & Shadow.I was hoping it would be something simpler/cheaper. Oh well!!!!
  22. I have a Garmin GPS 12XL. I get an 'error' type message when I turn it on that says "Memory battery is low". Anyone know what I should do? I've tried changing batteries, but that doesn't solve the prob. Thanks
