  1. I prefer the Garmin Etrex Vista for hiking, hunting and geocaching. It's compact, and the Garmin Canadian topo maps are great. I've seen this unit on sale for just over $200.
  2. Yes, every year at this time, knitter and I think of him as well. We miss seeing his smiling face at our Harvestfest event.
  3. As of right now, I'm not scheduled for mandatory OT on August 7, so count PumpkinOneA and I in! Jake and Tim haven't saved up enough allowance, so they're staying home.
  4. Close enough! It was called Splinter Heads. Go ahead, Couparangus!
  5. What was the name of the movie that featured geocaching, and starred a woman with the geoname "Galaxy"?
  6. OK, before this turns into a full-blown "Let's Bash Hamgran, the Control Freak!" forum, I think I'd better close it. Though it doesn't look like you can do that anymore. Thanks to all who have participated. I've certainly learned a lot.
  7. Yeah, you're probably right, 'Pig... it's just that this particular scenario doesn't sit right with my sense of order. Guess I'll have to get over that somehow!
  8. Muggles are part of caching, unfortunately. A find is never guaranteed at the end of any cache, no matter how difficult. Though I'm sure in the case of these challenge caches, once you've got the prerequisites and the cache goes missing, it will soon be replaced. The caches are generally quick and easy to get to.
  9. I notice that folks have been finding challenge caches, such as the Ontario monthlies, without meeting all the requirements... then posting a note on the cache page saying they found the cache, but that they will change that note to a smiley when they meet the requirements. Just wondering what the general consensus of this is. I've driven by a few of these and purposely haven't gone after them, because I don't meet the requirements yet. I go back when I've got the necessary caches under my belt, and find the cache and log it on the date I find it. Extra driving, maybe, but I'm sure I'm going to be in the area again to geocache, sometime! Seems to me if you just change the note you made, to a smiley, the date you found the challenge cache stays the same but you hadn't actually met the requirements on that date. To say nothing about the wrench doing this throws into the order, for those who collect FTFs or 2TFs. Thoughts? edited for grammar
  10. A very big congrats , popokiiti! I can relate to your joy, myself being Canadian but born elsewhere.
  11. Y'know, I shoulda known that... it was where the Raging Grannies first gathered. (Where I got the name 'hamgran'). Sheesh!
  12. In my neck of the woods, winter equals snow, at least most of the time. And snow is the biggest obstacle. To have an attribute that says "available during winter", to me, should mean that it is NOT on the ground. It shouldn't mean that you can't get to GZ during the winter. Theoretically, every cache is available during winter, since we can't disable them for a season anymore. Sometimes we have a dry spell here and the snow disappears off the ground for a week or two. Those are the winter days that I would go for the caches without the snowflake icon. But if I'm going to cache with heavy snow present, and I see that icon, I expect that cache to be off the ground. Unfortunately, not everyone thinks that way.

  14. How about this: Points score is the sum of all of his "found" caches, by terrain point value. Although I'm not sure how the lead amount could increase on a day he wasn't caching, since it's unlikely that other cachers' point score could go down...
  15. Hmmm, I remember reading a cache page about this just this past fall, and thinking it would be interesting as I'd done the corresponding cache in B.C. Near Schreiber, Ont? And I imagine there's a plaque there. Don't know the answer to the second question, though, but guessing it would be either the 50th or 100th anniversary.
  16. Way to go, Adam! (I kinda like that song, too...)
  17. Yeah, but I seem to remember that one of the original rules of the game was "no googling for the answers". OK, it’s time to dig out your old vinyl, cassette tape, or 8-track… What’s the cousin’s name in “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer”? (I heard he geocaches, when he’s not playing cards with Grandpa!).
  18. OK, here goes... 1) Oh, Come, All Ye Faithful 2) Joy to the World 3) Hark! The Herald Angels Sing 4) Oh Little Town of Bethlehem 5) Silent Night 6) We Three Kings of Orient Are 7) The First Noel 8) Deck the Halls 9) I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas 10) I saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus 11) While Shepherds Watch their Flocks at Night 12) It Came Upon a Midnight Clear 13) Oh Christmas Tree 14) What Child is This 15) Away in a Manger 16) God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen 17) Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer 18) The Little Drummer Boy 19) Santa Claus is Coming to Town 20) Angels We Have Heard on High 21) Oh Holy Night (I had to google the meaning of "tatterdemalion" for this one...)
  19. Lots of fun figuring this out! I got 'em all but #21, which I ended up googling (which disqualifies me)... great puzzle!
  20. I can answer part one of that question... Norad.
  21. Aaah, but what was so eloquently pointed out at the last CREW geo-event in Waterloo, Ont. on Tuesday, is that there are actually ten reindeer... the usual 9 suspects, and also "Olive, the Other Reindeer"....
  22. Attawapiskat, 12 letters... yeah, I guess there will be longer ones. Neat name, though.
  23. You got it, Binrat! Last week I was on the "Coastal Inspiration", one of the three. Wow.
