  1. I sent out my very first TB a month or so ago--Hiro's Doggelganger. It was encountered by a well-meaning new cacher who moved it to a new cache a state away, though the most recent Found It log indicates there were no trackables in the cache just two weeks later. I'm hopeful that someone just hasn't logged their finds yet and that it wasn't stolen... otherwise I'm going to just have to set out another bug, which is annoying. Thoughts?
  2. Don't know if it's been suggested or brought up or not but it would be great if search results were sortable--if you can do it now, it's not readily obvious as to how to do it.
  3. While most caches have pretty ordinary containers, has there been one cache in particular that you've found to be particularly clever or memorable? I've got to nominate Est. 1928 by MacGuyEric on Staten Island, who built a custom PVC-pipe container and then painted it with a camouflage motif. (Pictures on the cache page.) Any other favorites?
  4. I know I've become smitten in recent days with RSS ("really simple syndication") technology, and can't live without my feeds at the office. Does Geocaching have a RSS feed, maybe by region? If not, it might be a good idea.
  5. While I do see why it's fun to watch how a TB travels, it's a huge pain if you're an infrequent cache-er. I know that I picked up a TB in November and because the winter was so nasty here in NYC I didn't have a chance to get rid of it until just tonight. I'm thinking that I'm going to try and avoid TBs from now on, unless I'm doing more than one cache in a day.

She never gave anybody's name or identifying information, and besides, it all becomes a matter of public record as soon as the courts are involved. So, like it or not, anyone could access this information--it just would take a little more digging. _________________________ ~ Ryan S Eanes ~ RSEanes.com. Why not? http://www.rseanes.com
  7. Just out of curiosity, I wondered if anyone had trouble with their GPS units acting up this weekend. MacGuyEric and Fozzo Logozzo and I did a cache on Sunday, 11/2, and we had some trouble with the GPS locking on to satellites--might it have had something to do with the increased solar flare activity reported recently? _________________________ ~ Ryan S Eanes ~ RSEanes.com. 8. On a slightly unrelated note, do you know of any good places to get rubber stamp-making supplies? I imagine a good number of Geocachers would be interested in having a stamp for themselves on hand. _________________________ ~ Ryan S Eanes ~ RSEanes.com. Why not? http://www.rseanes.com
  9. At some point, what people do with cache items is really out of your control. I think you should leave the laser pointers if you'd like--it's not your concern, really, as to what happens to them after someone takes them. _________________________ ~ Ryan S Eanes ~ RSEanes.com. 10. That's quite a cool t-shirt! I think it's actually a great gift for someone I'm thinking of. Is it just available in the one color?
  11. I'm an educational advisor at Kaplan Test Prep in New York, and while I usually work during the week, I do occasionally have the odd weekend or late weeknight shift. My better half and I usually geocache on the weekends, but we've not gone out in a while mainly because we've had other weekend obligations for the past month or so. He's the one with the GPS unit (I've not had the change lying around recently to purchase one yet), so he will from time to time go out caching on his own.

  13. Just wanted to report that ejdietrich and I were able to go out geocaching for the first time this Sunday, and found four caches in Staten Island and one in Brooklyn (one of the S.I. caches seems to be missing). Our first five, all in one day! Yay!
  14. quote:Originally posted by Houston Muggles:As a previous poster above, my husband and I heard about it on the Travel Channel. I was wondering this very question a few days ago. We have not yet met another person who has even heard of it. Was it a special episode of a series? After thinking about it... I think that either Discovery or the Travel Channel would benefit from a series about geocaching--maybe not so much a "reality TV" show as a kind of documentary... Come to think of it, I'm surprised that geocaching hasn't been adapted into a reality TV show...

There are easier ways to pay for a set of nail clippers than with a long hike, mosquito bites, heat stroke and scratched shins. I know that for me, I associate almost a tangible sense of memory with a physical object. Lots of times I'll save a ticket stub, a leaf, anything that reminds me of something in a physical way... and maybe that's the appeal, for me, anyway, of taking a little something from a good or particularly memorable cache.
  16. I'd like to suggest that the administrators add some way to search for other geocachers. Right now you have to go about it in sort of a roundabout way--you can search for a cache before you can reach a cacher's profile... Is there some other way to get to specific cachers' profiles that I'm missing? If not, I'd like to suggest that that be added...

It comes with a customized version of Palm Desktop which is Windows only. I don't know if there will be another version out. So, basically you're out of luck with hot-syncing data, waypoints, etc if your only access to a computer is an Apple. I have a PC at work so I use that. OR for data I sync my Handspring and beam an item over to it if necessary. When I said Apple laptop, I meant an OLD PowerBook that my other half had lying around--the attached GPS was his idea. While I have a Mac (a gaudy "Flower Power" iMac, no less), I also have an IBM ThinkPad that is, for all intents and purposes, my primary machine, at least for the moment.
  18. quote:Originally posted by mrkablooey:the iQue is a nice piece of equipment BUT I wouldn't use it for Geocaching. I'd maybe carry it for Pocket Queries (if I didn't have an older Palm unit for that) and use an eTrex or Sportrak. If you drop it, there goes $500+. It's not rugged, it's not waterproof/water-resistant. If you want one, and can find one, get it to help you get to the park where the cache is located, but once you get to the lot, leave it in the car. Another reason is battery life. You kinda need the backlight on to really see the screen clearly, and without the GPS turned on, you can expect 2-3 hours if it's on non-stop. Turn the GPS on and there goes your battery ... The battery life sounds significantly better than that of a typical Palm anyway... but if I spent $600 on it, you can bet that it isn't going to stay in the car. ;-) I'm more than a little surprised that Garmin hasn't devised some sort of case for it that would make it at least a little more water resistant. I'm not talking about something that would let you drop it into a river and retrieve it unscathed, but something to keep it safe if it rains.
  19. Wow, sounds like fun! Hopefully I can drag my other half out with me... he's been looking for low cost activities for the weekend. This sounds like it just might fit the bill!
  20. I apologize in advance if somebody has already asked this at some point. I'm planning a microcache (Altoids tin--probably magnetic), but was interested in determining what, exactly, should go inside it. Obviously you'd want to have the Geocaching letter, but what would you do instead of a logbook? Just curious as to what generally is included in a microcache...
  21. quote:Originally posted by Renegade Knight:You have the advantage of having used a Palm so you know what you need in the PDA dept. That's a step up. There is another thread that points to the manuals used for the PDA. You can read that and see if the GPS part works for you as well. Nice as it is, I'm not sure I'd trust it to hold up to the rigors of non-urban caches and the associated hikes and terrain. I can understand that trepidation--I think, though, that I tend to treat my electronics fairly well (I've heard of geocachers and non-geocachers alike throwing their GPS's and the like--I wouldn't dream of doing that), so I think it's a winner in my book. Thanks for mentioning the manual. I will check that out. It sure does beat the alternative, though, which is lugging around an Apple laptop and attached GPS pod. Yikes!
  22. I just discovered that the New York Times had mentioned a newer product from Garmin called the iQue 3600... and, seeing as how I want to get a GPS and replace my old Palm m100, this seems to be the most ideal unit for me. Has anyone purchased it, or does anyone have any practical advice or information on the unit? I think I want to sort of "treat" myself to it in a couple of weeks once I start getting bigger paychecks. Any feedback on the unit would be appreciated!

Is it clay?
