  1. Perhaps the human race should not exist on planet earth. But here we are and by simply taking a breath of air we leave a trace of our existence on this planet. The trick is to find that middle ground between not giving a care about any damage we may do and thinking we can live on earth without anything or anyone knowing we were here. There are extremist on both sides of most every issue. As for geocaching on public land, the words “public lands” is clear to me. We as citizens of the United States of America have a right to responsibly use these lands. We do not have a right to cause extreme stress and damage but we will leave some trace of having been there.
  2. Denial of facts is a common way of justifying poor behavior.
  3. This is not a minor violation but indead a serious one. It may take some time but the tree will surly die from driving a nail into it. Besides why would someone be so totally ill responsible as to deface a natural living thing?
  4. Droo, thank you for taking the time to help me.
  5. is there any way to go in and edit a log? when I try and fix some old mistakes i made on some of mine this is the message i get. "There was an action associated with this log. The log type cannot be changed"
  6. I tried a little different approach to my caching today. I loaded a couple of cache coordinates into my GPSr, didn’t look at the description or logs and went out on the hunt. I had no idea what I was looking for except that there should be some kind of cache near the coordinates I loaded. Not knowing even the size of container made for an interesting hunt although I found both of them easier than I expected. I think I will take this approach more often. Perhaps on caches with a higher difficulty rating next time.
  7. Well here it goes! Rules are for conformists and are not really intended for most people so don’t expect everyone to follow them. Caching at a commercial establishmen; Baaaaaaa. I have no sympathy for anyone involved! At least if one falls in the woods they may be able to sue the bears or maybe the forest service if it happens in a national forest.
  8. This weekend we searched out a cache close to home with the intent to do a coin trade. The cache we picked out had listed two coins and a TB in its inventory. I checked out the trackables logs and found that one of the coins missions was special to me and I had a coin that I brought up from Nevada to Oregon that I thought would be a great trade for it. The logs indicated that all three items were still in the cache; in fact one of them had been placed in it just the day before. We found the cache with no problem but all three trackables were gone. I watched the logs for the next couple of days and no activity! Also no other logged visits to the cache! This is not the first time this has happened but this time was a little irritating. I am not sure what this is behind this problem, it may be that some people are just too ill responsible to log their trackable finds or it may be deliberate. whatever the case I simply had to vent a little and this seamed like a good place for it. Cache on!
  9. Regardless of how anyone interrupts the new “rules” I will continue my geocaching adventures as I want as I have from my day one. After all, as the pirates all say, "they're really just guidelines anyway". Aren’t we all really just pirates out looking for treasure and the “rules” be damned?
  10. is there a way to delete multiple waypoints at a time from the Garman Vista HCX?
  11. sounds great! do it. size dosent matter
  12. No thank you. i would have no part of any point system!
  13. I personally don’t see the point in weird logging requirements. The challenge should be in finding the cache. The cache log and the online log should be sufficient. But if you don’t like the cache requirements for whatever reasons you certainly have the option to not look for it. Logging requirements are no different than difficulty levels. I am not a mountain climber or a scuba diver so I don’t look for caches that require that activity. I don’t care to have my photo plastered on the internet so I would not look for a cache that requires that. That leaves an awful lot of caches still out there for me to find.
  14. I believe that TB should be placed in another cache as soon as possible. A couple of weeks or a month is not unreasonable, much longer than that the TB owner could be contacted with an explanation why one has taken longer than expected. An example might be that you have a trip planed that you may want to move the TB to a specific destination. Some TB have a goal and it is best to try and follow the owners requests but, as with most geocaching “guidelines”, I don’t consider this an absolute rule. I think the most important thing is to be sure to go to geocaching.com and log what is going on with the TB.
  15. fuel cell power this is an interesting idea.
  16. I thought one of the purposes of this forum was a place to ask questions and get answers and sometimes (often?) enter into stimulating discussions about these topics. Dose it really matter if certain questions often come up? New people regularly come into this forum, they have opinions they want to express and also questions about things that have come up in the past. I don’t think a fact sheet of guidelines leaves much room for personalities or new takes on old subjects.
  17. This weekend I had to made a trip of a couple hundred miles. Before I went I did my first “Caches along a Route" and then did a Pocket Query on that rout that generated exactly the caches I wanted and uploaded the results into my GPSr. It was fast and easy the first try. It made my trip a lot more fun and interesting, ya it’s worth it. And it feels better to support this system I am using rather than just taking the freebies.
  18. On a the trackable item detail page in the upper left corner where the owner, date released, and origin are listed what is the “to reference this item” field for? Example: Owner: xxxxx Released: Sunday, February 11, 2007 Origin: xxxxxxxxx Use TBXXXXX to reference this item. Also on most TB logs there is very little logged by the finders. Usually just a simple “found it” is this just the few I have found and researched or is the normal way for logging a TB find?
  19. I was writing to post a new topic and saw the OP question in this one so thought here was a good spot for this. It doesn’t matter what GPSr you use for this to work. I have a road trip of a couple of hundred miles planed for this weekend so I thought I would try my first attempt at a generating a cache along a route query. I was totally impressed! I set up the route, did a pocket query on it, transferred it into GSAK, and uploaded it into my GPSr all on the first try. Like most computer related stuff, the instructions were a little intimidating to me but doing it was really rather simple. It’s going to make road trips a lot more interesting now that I can easily incorporate geocaching into them.
  20. Quality versus quantity is what these types of discussions are usually about. Whatever your preference the tools are readily available to fulfill either without changing the density of caches. I have just became a Premium member and have also started to use GSAK and can see that I can easily set up a pocket query that will show a rout with a good number of caches in a given confined area or refine my search to that one or two caches that have all the qualities I desire. I don’t do change well, especially when what is in place works just fine.
  21. Please re-read my OP. I know how I would personally handle this situation! I have no problem or particular situation I am dealing with. I am quite new at geocaching and am just curious how others view this particular type of cache request. Why is it that most times when someone asks a question about a cache on this forum they are told if they don’t like it don’t hunt that cache or don’t play the game or some other remark to that effect? Often times these remarks are made to newbie’s like me that are just trying to get a better understanding of the game and the people that play it.
  22. I was wondering how others feel about a cache owner dictating what is acceptable as trade items in their cache? I know that whoever places the cache technically owns it but is it not placed out there for others to use however they play the game? I know there is a lot of what some players think is junk left in caches but that’s just the way it goes. I personally don’t really care what is in a cache but I would not want to be put in a spot where I felt uncomfortable recovering a certain cache because I did not have or did not agree with the type of items that was requested be left for trade.
  23. sounds like a total waste of time and effort
  24. All of the above plus I like finding trackable items in a cache. I especially like leaving all of our daily baggage behind and totally enjoying the moment with my wife.
