  1. I knew the cache was there but this little guy was not wanting to give it up. I finally convinced him to move and sure enough it was under that rock.
  2. ok this one should help with the shortage. if they were all this size look at all the metal we would save.
  3. You are not alone, do not despair, as I am getting ready to go on one of my rare trips into the city this morning I find myself slipping my .40 S&W into my geocaching bag that I always take with me. it is simply one of the tools I carry.
  4. I really doubt that geocache training will ever happen or make one bit of difference to LEO. The standard operation procedure is, see suspicious package assume the worst and blow it up. I totally agree with this. unfortunately we will lose some geocaches this way, so be it. in this world the burden is on the cache owner to do what they can to prevent this from happening by thoughtful placement of caches. many times I have seen post on this forum that go something like this, "do you think it's ok to place a cache in a paper box, under a bridge, across the street from the airport, or some other stupid place" get real, if you think your cache placement is questionable don't put it there. if you do place one that gets blown up, move on and place another in a better spot.
  5. I am not trying to justify ill responsible thoughtless cache placement but I just wonder how many non caching related bomb scares the same police force responded to in that year? Of the 912,389 active geocaches around the world, a VERY few are responded to by the bomb squad. It would be wonderful if that number were zero but with this many people involved in geocaching and law enforcement a little on edge these days these incidents are going to happen. Unfortunately we will all pay for the bad judgment of a few.
  6. I agree that a 1 should be handicapped accessible but the attributes buttons should qualify this. it is a simple thing for a cache owner to select and attribute. perhaps the reviewer should check this when a 1 is the rating. also it's a simple thing for a finder to mention in their online log. we all have a responsibility to help make caching an enjoyable experience for everyone who wants to do it.
  7. I think a public flogging is in order geeees people!
  8. Although that is not my style of caching, I think what you propose is ok as long as you adhere to the guidelines and use common since in regards to the environment. I personally prefer a cache that leads me to interesting places. I don't care to spend an exorbitant amount of time searching for a needle in a haystack. I searched for a cache under a sage bush one time. the area was a non descript huge open plane of sage bushes. now we all know that our GPSR can sometimes be plus or minus fifty feet giving a search area of 7853 square feet. you can fit a lot of sage bushes in that. I did find it but I won't waste my time on something like that again. porkchop401, please don't steer clear of the forum. although there is some rude and critical behavior there is also great information to be gleaned from in here. I also believe that you and everyone has something worthwhile to offer.
  9. I think it's ok to hide a cache at a cemetery I do not dig for caches so that's not something I would be doing at a cemetery most cemeteries are easy to walk around in so it would be kid friendly there is often some interesting historical things to be learned at a cemetery family friendly? why not? death and cemeteries are not something to hide from kids I still don't get it how can it be family friendly. How death in particular is friendly? I understand that we all die one day but still. Isn't it depressing to even talk about it? And kids should not learn about death before they start a life. They don't even know what life is and your teaching them about death already? Why would anybody take a kid to a cemetery unless it’s a family related issue? I will not turn this into a debate! You asked some questions and I answered them as honest as I can. I know we do not all have the same perspective of death. my answers are not meant to persuade or influence you or anyone in any way. I did not question your opinions on the subject so please allow me to have mine and simply accept my answers as my personal beliefs.

  11. think about how many caches we hear about the bomb squads blowing up because they are suspicious packages in public locations. probably a train station would not be a good place for a cache. in fact I doubt if any reviewer would approve it.
  12. Nearly five million people visit The Grand Canyon every year. if each one left something in it even as small as a geocoin I wonder how long it would take to fill it up. perhaps that's why the USFS has rules addressing such activities. rember this topic? "Forest Service taking caches"
  13. first off let me state that I totally support our service men and women and I do have an agenda of remembrance and to promote Veterans rights. I am a veteran and a member of The VFW, DAV, and Viet Nam Veterans of America. I do think the wording on this cache is over the top as promoting an agenda and probably not in the best interest of this hobby. a zero tolerance of agendas is one of the things that keeps this hobby safe for the widest range of participants. It's comforting to know that when I take my grandkids geocaching we probably won't open a cache and find something offensive to them or me.
  14. Wow! I was off the computer a couple of days and come back to find this still going on. I thought it would be beat to death by now. On well I guess I will stick my two cents worth in and see how many feathers I can ruffle. Groundspeak's guidelines are simple enough for anyone to understand. No matter how one wants to pick apart and analyze every word the intent is still the same. if you don't get it ask someone who does . As for the Forest service give it a break! We have thousands of people using our national forests and other public lands and every one of them has some activity they want to do on our public lands. the people that manage these lands try to come up with rules to accommodate as many people and varied activities as possible and still protect these lands. these rules continuously change as the mission or the desired use changes. it does not happen overnight but going through the proper channels will get a much better result than attacking our public workers for simply doing their jobs. and yes rules are often implemented differently within different districts and agencies. get over it! look how many interpretations of a simple Groundspeak guideline we get in our relatively small geocaching community.
  15. same with me. never found one nor looked for one.
  16. Meanwhile Back to the OP if the cache owner bids high enough the situation will be resolved
  17. one factor is the original size of the photo when it was uploaded. if the original was uploaded as a thumbnail size the program cannot make it bigger. you can save it to your own photo processing program and enlarge it but it will be somewhat distorted.
  18. H&K USP .40 S&W in a horizontal draw shoulder holster with 2 extra 10 round mags on the off side. fast, powerful, and accurate.
  19. The problem with carrying a handgun is that very few people are capable of using one effectively in a combat or even an animal attack situation. generally most people will become more of a hazard to themselves or others around them rather than a help. believe me, target shooting a couple of times a year or even a lot more does not prepare anyone to respond to an emergency. That said, I do carry a handgun and I have the proper training on how to use it in combat as I would suggest anyone carrying one for personal protection should have.
  20. exactly!, in one's mind they can play the game in any way they want. But, Groundspeak does not require that you read the cache page. BTW I do sign the log books and believe that everyone should. I just prefer guidelines to inflexible rules.
  21. No, I am ont saying what anyone should or should not do. it's simply an option. Probably not the best one
  22. One of the attractions of geocaching is that you can personalize it to yourself. sometimes, to add a little difficulty, I will search a cache with coordinates s only and purposely not read the cach page. if I ever find one with a lock box I still found it and I will log it on the web site. if the owner wants to delete my log so be it, I still found it. for me it's not about the logs, I am in it for the search and find. Of course if it is really all that important one could simply use their trusty multi tool and open the lock.
  23. US Army Supply convoy truck driver, everywhere Viet Nam 1969-1971.
  24. does anyone have a list of caches at rest stops along interstate 5 through Oregon that they would be willing to share? I have searched for one in public routs but haven't been able to find one. thanks for any help.
  25. I have an idea to do a series of caches that will each contain parts of the coordinates to the location of the final cache in the series. The final cache will contain instructions of how to obtain a prize for completing the series. Is this acceptable by Groundspeak guidelines and would anyone be interested in doing a series like this?
