  5. Calculating is easy, keep in mind that a DEGREE has 60 minutes, a MINUTE has 60 seconds (and reverse) a second is 1/60 of minute, a minute is 1/60 of degree. In examples: --- Deg° Min' SS.SSS" TO Deg° Min.MMM' CALCULATION: 51° 47' 23.456" ... 51° 47'+(23.456"/60)=0.39093' ... RESULT= 51° 47.3909' --- Deg° Min.MMM' TO Deg.DDDDD° CALCULATION: 51° 47.3909' ... 51°+(47.3909'/60)=0.78984° ... RESULT= 51.78984° -- Deg.DDDDD° TO Deg° Min.MMM' CALCULATION: 51.78984° ... (0.78984*60)=47.3904' ... RESULT= 51° 47.3909' -- Deg° Min.MMM' TO Deg° Min' SS.SSS" CALCULATION: 51° 47.3909' ... (0.3909*60)=23.454" ... RESULT= 51° 47' 23.454" Due to rounding there are some small difference between initial and end coordinates..

  7. Hello Dan, I was in the same situation as you. Bought an eXplorist 500 LE, and I have found out quickly, that the three AAA batteries lasts only 4-5 hours. I far as I know, the battery type which fits into Magellan eXplorist is SNN5582B (SNN5582A is 750mAh only) which is 1100mA. The same unit such is used in the 'Motorola T720/T730' cellphone. I was looking at higher capacity so I have bought on eBay from seller 'vl1066' - Magellan eXplorist rechergeable Li-Ion battery 1350mA (!) $15 - power cable for car 12V cigarette lighter $12 - Magellan eXplorist Bike Handlebar Mount Bracket $22 This battery lasts as a hell, with medium backlight you can count with 15 hours, (+ keep 3xAAA as backup). I have an 12v battery at home (diving light) so I can recharge the GPS even at home and outdoors. You have an option to buy USB recharge cable. idiver
  8. >ace862 >It seems that 2.17 was released after 2.57 which has a date of March 2007. YES, it does make a sense what you say. My firmware says "Rev. 5.2.17 24 Apr. 2007". In a hunt for "new&better" firmware I have download an Explorist_500_600_2_57.zip. Looking into it, it shows a date 08.02.2008. >The firmware will not let you "upgrade" to an older firmware than you already have. >Somebody please correct me if I am wrong. YES, clever programmers (have to) do it that way.... so you are right. As to fact that you have no WAAS signal anymore, the answer is here maybe: http://www.gpsfaqs.org/faqs/magellan/explo...t500/usage.html People who still want to "upgrade" read this (especially the end section): here http://www.gpsfaqs.org/faqs/magellan/explo...0/firmware.html The EGNOS satellites in here Europe has numbers 33 and 44. I have good WAAS/EGNOS signal, but who knows if a new upgrade will not affect this functionality ???
