  1. Thanks for the quick replies! Love the community, always so quick to help! I did a map search for where I am, saw about a dozen or so in my area, and went one by one on the map clicking "download to GPS" and putting them in my 62s. I checked to make sure they were in there.... and I just turned it on to check the descriptions, which are included. Duh. Teach me not to learn how my toys work before playing with them. Looks like I am taken care of for the local ones.
  2. Hello all! I started geocaching about 5 years ago but kind of fell out of it after my last GPS gave up the ghost. While visiting friends this past weekend I picked up a new Garmin 62s on sale with the intent of getting back into the hobby. So, while I know a fair amount, I am posting this mostly to try and get some info on how to catch up to the current tech. Figured out how to sync it with my mac so I could upload coordinates directly into the GPS. My next question is, what should I do for the cache descriptions? I have an iPad that I would like to use for this, but I am not really sure what program to use or how to set all of that up. I would appreciate any help or advice on where to go to get more info. Google has turned up a bit, but it seems centered in iPods and such. Thanks!
  3. "Just say no" to LPCs...(sorry but I couldn't resist) Boy, glad I am not the only one who noticed a problem with those...
  4. These are good examples of caches that need to be reported to a reviewer. Watch out, you might get in trouble with the other kids for being a 'cache police hall monitor'.
  5. So, what I am getting is that there really is nothing that can be done if someone didnt follow the rules with placing a cache. As soon as its 'approved' by the admin here and listed as a cache, its a cache, until the owner finds it and removes it? I am still kinda new to this, so I am not trying to make a fuss.. but doesnt that seem a little irresponsible as an organization? We have rules (like get permission before putting a cache on private property) but no way to enforce those rules, and even going so far as to check on them is discouraged? Doesnt make sense to me. I guess the only thing I can do is make sure I am following the rules for placing a cache myself when the time comes to start doing that. Guess the 'honor system' means different things to different people.
  6. Generally, 10-15 minutes, then I make return trips if necessary. I limit it to two return trips, then a DNF. If its in a location I dont get to often, I might go to 20-30 minutes.. but after that much time, I am getting a little frustrated and am not looking with the proper mindset.
  7. I dunno. That's a pretty easy assumption for me to make. One of the advantages to being in law enforcement is that I am frequently speaking with the management of various big box stores, (Sir, do you want to prosecute? Sign here.), and our conversations have often lead into caching as a general topic, without "outing" any specific cache. Out of over a dozen conversations I've had, the only answer I've received is "No". That list includes, but is not limited to, Walmart, Kmart, Target, Big Lots, Ace, Publix, Starbucks and, (you guessed it), Cracker Barrel. I am at a 100% "No" rate. My other reason for making such a broad sweeping assumption is the conversations I've had with my fellow cachers regarding these types of hides. Every single cacher I've spoken with about their commercial property cache stated that they did not get specific permission for them. (Edit: I take that back. I know of two exceptions. ) These observations lead me to suspect that the vast majority of commercial property caches have been hidden under the guise of "adequate" permission, I.e: the belief that, because Joe Public is allowed to be at a particular place, and there are no rules specifically prohibiting it, a cache can be hidden there. While I am a proponent of the adequate permission theory for public lands, my interpretation of the guidelines doesn't allow me to include private property in that assessment. Thats along the lines of what I was talking about. There are some in locations that when I approached the management about geocaches on their property they also said no, yet there are caches there already. Are cache placers usually receptive to comments along those lines, or is there someone else who should be contacted? Just wondering the etiquette for improperly placed caches (as in, put in private property without permission).
  8. Thanks for all the replies. I am not sure why the forum says I dont exist, but I did get the messages. Why the lack of love for Nano's? Sure, they are frustrating to find, but I have a good time looking for them (usually). There is a set of local nano's at various bus stops around town. Considering I work for the bus system, its kinda fun to combine work and fun with that. Off topic, but my outlook is if you dont like a cache type, just dont go looking for them. Others might enjoy it. I am not one for puzzle caches, so I just filter them out.
  9. What can be done about these? Is there someone you can report them to so that they get flagged? How about caches in local parks that dont allow caches to be placed in them? I havent come across many, only been caching a short time, but enough to make me wonder what some people are thinking.
  10. Does anyone know where I can buy logs for the Nano caches? I know when you buy one it comes with an extra log, but sooner or later your going to need a fresh one without having to buy another cache. Figured someone here might know.
  11. I heard of a similar problem locally with someone messing with caches, known as the "GeoCrasher". I guess some folks have nothing better to do.
  12. I have a question along the same lines. I am taking a trip out of town this weekend, in part because I have a bug that needs to get to a nearby city (Denver) and I had a few things to do up there anyway. I was planning to cache most of Friday, then go up Sunday. As I am out and about, its ok to pick up multiple bugs to relocate? Is there a 'courtesy limit'? I probably wont find more than a half-dozen at best. The way I read the other replies, as long as the bugs have goals that make relocation a plus, I should move them, right? There are also a few 'hotels' along the way (though none say anything about taking 1 and leaving 1) I was going to hit up and see if any needed a ride up with me. It seems to me that a hotel is a bit of a staging area to distribute to local caches (or to move elsewhere). Should I be leaving some there as well?
  13. Palmer Park has some good views, but the caches there are TOUGH! I have only found one so far. I would suggest Bear Creek Park, I maintain one of the ones there ( Link ). Just north of that park is Old Colorado City (between 21st and 30th along Colorado Ave, if you use the googlemaps option) which has a bunch of caches. I have not had a chance to get there yet, but its on my list. The Citadel Mall has several in the area that were pretty quick. Here is the one I would suggest starting with, and go looking from there out. Hope that helps!
  14. I am glad I am not the only one to notice this. I have had to cross several local caches off of my list because the coordinates had me hunting around places or things I didnt think were appropriate (such as a gas main nearby a local park). There is a series I have found a few for that are hidden in and around local 7-11 stores, often near the rear entrance. I have a hard time looking because it looks like I am casing the place. Is this a common thing with geocaching? What can be done to discourage folks from hiding caches in places like that?
  15. Hmm... said another member has been invited to adopt that cache. I will send the owner another e-mail, and let it go from there.
  16. I did a quick search, but I am still a bit confused with the details of how this works. I found a local cache that was in disrepair. As the owner is no longer living in this state, I took a bit of time to fix it up, put a new log in, waterproofing, etc. I then sent the owner a message to let him know and that I wouldnt mind taking care of it. He was fine with the idea, having been gone for a few years already. So, how do I go about doing this officially?
  17. Smaller as in Ammocans, right? You know, thats about right on... I actually found one today, after a string of about a half dozen which I havent been able to find. There is one that a co-worker hid (one who has a rep for being very good at making tough caches) that I might go looking for after work tonight.
  18. Good point on that as well. I think I might try a few smaller caches around town and sit on this idea for awhile. Thanks for the help!
  19. Heh.. if only it worked. Would save me quite a bit on gas.
  20. Hmm.. maybe a multiple cache to a more secure site. I have just noticed in watching various caches around town for the past 5 months or so that the same bugs tend to stay in the area for long periods of time, preventing them from really traveling. I went to a cache in NM on a trip, quick and easy, right off of the interstate (which was good, I was traveling with friends who were willing to help me pick up a few caches, but I didnt want to put them out of their way), where I got my first bug. Perhaps a depot isnt a good idea, but I am not really much for the complex and complicated caches, personally. I usually dont have more than 15-30 minutes to really spend looking for a single cache at any given time (before/after work, or on the weekends or trips), so 'quick and easy' is what I think of when looking for and thinking about placing a cache. Good points about the loss of multiple bugs should it get muggled. I will scout the area, see if I cant place a clue to a better location nearby and turn it into a fairly quick multi-cache. I figure I can just set it up, stock it with bugs I find that need to get out of town, and let it go from there. I still think the stargate themed cache is a good idea.
  21. Just as I posted, I have a perfect idea for a general location. In Colorado Springs, right off of the interstate, there is a monument that is 'unofficially' a tribute to Stargate SG-1 (which is supposedly located in NORAD, which can be seen from this park). A "Stargate" Cache might be in order.
  22. I am fairly new to caching, but in a recent trip to NM I picked up a few TB's, and looking over these forums got me to thinking. I came across this cache (GC14TGX - Link) and was wondering what folks thought of the idea. Not necessarily a hotel or prison, I dont like the idea of that, but a depot of some sort in a spot thats close to the highway and easy for passer-by to access. The idea of putting several TB's into circulation for long-distance trips has been rolling around in my head for awhile, and I think this might help as a 'jumping off' point for them. Would also help the other bugs in town that need to get moving to have somewhere to go for the trip. Thoughts?
