  1. Yes!!! One of my grandsons is just the same - and he's only 8!! The first thing he says when he comes to stay is "AND I'M NOT COMING GEOCACHING!!" Chris
  2. I've just been updating my PQs (using Win XP & FF4 without greasemonkey scripts). When you submit a revised PQ, the acknowledgement "Thanks! Your pocket query has been modified and currently results in 997 caches. You can preview the search on the nearest cache page." now appears in a light green at the top of the page (on white background). This is much more difficult to read (to check the number of caches hit) than the rest of the black on white text. Is this is deliberate change or a bug? Chris
  3. I've noticed that cacherstats.com hasn't been updated since the 3rd of May. Has it been unable to access cacher stats since the update perhaps? Chris
  4. Have you tried emailing the logger and asking them to remove the photo as it gives too much away? Chris Nah, I didn't want to make an issue of it with them. If I was the logger, I think I'd be more offended by a cache-owner deleting my photo from my log without any warning or explanation, than if they'd emailed me and explained gently that it was a bit too revealing <_< Go for it and email them! They won't bite!! Chris
  5. Have you tried emailing the logger and asking them to remove the photo as it gives too much away? Chris
  6. Solved this now - I'd been using the GreaseMonkey LogMaximizer script to overcome this design fault before, and now it's been updated (thanks guys for a fantastic service) I'm getting a decent size text box again. Chris
  7. I use a netbook (1024 x 600) with Win XP and FF4 for geocaching rather than my desktop so the size issues are fine for me. But the bleedthrough of background images is annoying. Having just entered logs for 25 finds that I made yesterday, I found the need to enlarge the size of the log entry box every time to write a decent length log very annoying! I'd rather encourage cachers to write descriptive logs by giving them a decent size box to write in than encourage a spate of TFTC TNLNs from iPhoners. Chris
  8. I am guessing the change is to give GS the ability to go after websites that publish puzzle solutions and things like that. But that is just my WAG. I was thinking along the lines of WRASTRO. Matthew 7:7 is local to me and I am sure he is aware of a local cacher who runs a site with photos and spoiler information plus a "can't find a local cache service" drop me a line service and I will send you details on where it is I never have Hi Gushoneybun, Funnily enough I have never come across the site you mentioned, so have never been tempted!!! Chris
  9. I may be a bit paranoid but I've some concerns over the following item to be included in the update: 26958: Terms of Use Agreement Modification Hotfixed the TOU to add language prohibiting the publication of spoilers for any geocache without consent of the cache owner Whose definition of spoiler are we using? The cache owner's or any cacher? I was recently emailed by a new cacher who had found all of 2 caches. The second cache contained a log from me that was dated a year ago, and included the warning that 'there's no need to trample down the bluebells to find this cache'. (The cache was at the edge of a woods containing a large number of wild bluebells - a protected species.) Any competent cacher with a GPSr would realise that there was no need to enter the woods, but my complainant (who admitted she did not own a GPSr and was geocaching via the use of Google Earth instead) saw my log as a spoiler and told me that as a reasonably experienced cacher I should know better than to give spoilers like I had! I would hope a complaint such as hers would not be taken as proof I had breached the TOU! (If a cache owner ever had need to contact me over anything I had said in a log, then I would of course respect their wishes and edit my comments.) Chris
  10. I see today's gc.com update includes the following: 26958: Terms of Use Agreement Modification Hotfixed the TOU to add language prohibiting the publication of spoilers for any geocache without consent of the cache owner I do hope they can provide an adequate definition of what they consider a "spoiler" to be, in view of the complaint referred to in my last post!! Chris
  11. Think there's another glitch in the renewal system!! My Premium membership was due to expire on the 14th of May, and I renewed it today. Initially the screen said I would be renewing to 14th of May 2012, but when the payment went through it now says I've bought a Premium Membership for 19th of April 2011 to 19th of April 2012! So my $30 has only bought 48 weeks or so instead of 52?! I've managed to use their contact screen to report this (despite the wierd font words that you have to enter being invisible on Firefox!) and am awaiting their response. Chris
  12. But if it is registered to another cacher should you do this??? What if the geocoin has been stolen from a cache and been sold without the owner's consent? (A couple of my geocoins have disappeared from the caches they were left in, and if they have been sold then I would not want the new "owner" to be able to take them over!) Have you tried emailing the owner to find out the history of this geocoin? Chris
  13. Spoilers are in the eyes of the beholder though. A puzzle cache I found a year ago includes these words in my log: "The bluebells in the woods are very pretty, and there's no need to trample through them!" Last week a new cacher (with just 2 finds) accused me of giving away the location of the cache by saying this! Would they have preferred to see the whole area trampled by eager cachers? If it had been the cache owner, or a more experienced cacher, then I would have been more sympathetic but I am afraid I see their comments as an extreme over-reaction especially as the difficulty of this cache relates to the puzzle you have to solve rather than identifying the cache container and it's hiding place. Chris
  14. I was having the same problem with the Beta maps, then noticed an insignificant tick box on the lefthand side inviting me to "Enable Personization" (sic). Ticking this produced all my smilies for found caches!! Chris
  15. PQs running later and later each day now, still waiting for 1 of today's. Perhaps it's designed to move us all over to iPhones rather than use PQs and decent GPSrs?? Chris
  16. It's working for me! Thanks a lot, sure this will be very useful. Chris
  17. If the total value of the items is less than £18, you shouldn't have to pay duty or VAT. But when I have bought goods from the USA over the internet, I've sometimes been pleased to see the sender has labled them as a present to make sure! Chris
  18. I lost a good Photo Leki pole that way... I'd found the first stage of a multi-cache, walked perhaps 400 yards to the next stage, realised I'd left my pole behind so went back... and of course it had gone. I'd left it near the entry drive to Shugborough Hall, but no-one handed it in, so I had to buy another (cheaper) one. Something to note is that LIDL were selling some good, cheap carbon-fibre walking poles last autumn - well worth looking out for next autumn. My way to make sure I don't leave things behind now is to take my wife with me when I go caching. (I'm unlikely to leave HER behind, and she will make sure I don't leave anything else behind!!) On the other hand, while following a caching trail a few weeks ago, I found some nice pink gloves, a woolly hat, and a dog lead! I hid the gloves at the start of the trail and then found a previous cacher had moaned about leaving them behind in her logs so was able to tell her where to find them again. Chris
  19. I believe the UK-based Earthcache reviewer withdrew for personal reasons, and that UK Earthcaches are now reviewed by volunteers in the USA. But this doesn't stop them giving an excellent service!! I submitted an Earthcache proposal last Monday and had an instant and helpful response by email suggesting a few alterations. I made these, and after a few days delay had my Earthcache approved. Considering these guys are volunteers and have their real life to lead as well, I am extremely impressed with their helpful attitude to improving our proposals. Chris of Matthew 7:7 Too
  20. There's 1 more Platinum member in the UK now!! We had found 21 Earthcaches in 8 regions across the UK, Luxembourg and Austria by the 8th of February this year, and our 3rd Earthcache was accepted on the 1st of April giving us our Platinum award. Now awaiting details of the new levels... Chris & Sylvie of Matthew 7:7 Too
  21. Yes there probably are several ways of doing this. If you look at my profile you will what mine looks like. Like many cachers, I use a program called GSAK to store PQs (Pocket Queries) from the geocaching website. This creates a database of the caches around me, and also stores details of my found caches (by running a special PQ that contains details of the caches I have found. GSAK is an extremely versatile program and can seem to have a steep learning curve. But there are excellent tutorials and it has a very popular support forum to help newcomers get to grips with it. I have used it for 3 years, and am still tweaking it to meet new needs. To extend GSAK, users have developed macro scripts that you add to it. A very popular one is called FindStatsGen3, and that too can be customised to present as much or as little information about your finds as you want. So all I have to do is update my found caches in GSAK, run FindStatsGen3 and then copy the HTML into my profile on geocaching.com to get the information you see in my profile. If you like what you see, you can download a copy of GSAK on a trial basis, and explore its power. The macros are developed by GSAK users and are developed and distributed via the GSAK support forum. Chris
  22. I haven't experienced problems with Google Earth itself, but I don't have the Tip of The Day enabled. Have you tried looking for an update? My version is 6.0.0.1735 Beta, running on a Windows XP netbook. I also have a copy on my Vista desktop that works fine. Chris
  23. It must have been a glitch. This time I was able to download the viewer and it works again. Chris
  24. My Google Earth geocache viewer isn't working any more, and when I tried to download a new copy I got an error message from the GC.com website. Has this been broken by the last site update perhaps?? Chris
