  1. Thanks, So the lack of caches in the UK would seem to be mirrored across the world... wonder why they were so keen to state that the new Oregon 600 could download 4 million caches and imply that their site held that many?? Chris
  2. There is a link on the squirrel's site to down load the entire site as a .ggz. I'm guessing it has been implemented. Groundspeak's turn now. Clyde is currently putting it into GSAK, basically by reverse engineering the format. There are users working with him on it. We have very few squirrel caches round our way - but I wonder if anyone can try to download them all and see just how many they have worldwide??
  3. I agree, I've looked at Facebook once or twice but don't have the time to devote my life to it like some people (and I include my daughter-in-law here!) I've never used Twitter. They're only a fad like Friends Reunited and mobile phones -- I do have one of the latter but strictly for my security when caching! Instead I use forums that are specific to my interests, like geocaching, photography and cycling.
  4. Your enquiry seems to have been ignored, so I'll try to answer it! If you buy the Garmin xxxt models, then you get a fairly basic European "Topo" map included with it. Typically this includes roads, some major paths but not canal towpaths judging by the one on my Oregon 400t. You can buy the GPSr bundled with an OS Discoverer map covering the whole of the British Isles, for a pretty hefty discount over the price of buying the map seperately. Or you can download free maps from sites like Talky Toaster (for the UK) or Freizeitkarte (for Europe) or Open Street Maps for rest of the world. The free maps are typically updated every month as users add information (their free because their being created by the users in the same as as a Wiki). The "official OS maps or Garmin Topo maps are not updated as a free service - you would have to buy a complete replacement at the full price. Chris
  5. Wasn't the Boston Tea Party all about refusing to pay unjustifiable taxes?? Although I think it's arguable that Groundspeak ARE providing a service in the UK as we use their website to find our caches, and so they should pay VAT. The problem is more likely the usual fictitious exchange rate applied to American software when exported to the UK - compare Adobe and Micro$oft prices! Chris
  6. If you're in the UK, I don't see why not Keith! Go to the GAGB website - www.gagb.co.uk - and join up. (It's free, you just need to register.) You'll then be able to access the Member's Chat section of the GAGB Forum, and you'll find a pinned topic giving details of the Cotswold Outdoors discount for GAGB members. (They're quite liberal with their discounts as I also have a discount via the Cyclists Touring Club!) Go to the bottom of the thread to download the current letter giving your discount code. at present it's a 15% discount. Chris
  7. I am in the UK and received mine on Tuesday of this week from Go Outdoors, complete with 1:50k OS maps. It arrived just in time for 2 weeks of hiking and sea kayaking in Scotland :-) Wow great news!! GoOutdoors need to update their website to show the 600 is available then and not still on pre-order! (I'm still waiting for a 650 though, and will be buying from Cotswold Outdoors as their prices are better with the GAGB discount) Chris
  8. By the time we get them in Europe, I hope you will have sorted all the bugs out! Amazon UK is saying all variants will be released on the 1st of August, while other retailers are varying from late April (a date that hasn't been updated for weeks) to late May. If Garmin want to keep us interested they had better start handing some out for reviewers to report back on or they'll lose sales to their competitors. Chris
  9. I was wondering if you still needed to recalibrate the compass after changing batteries. The manual states that "Your device was already calibrated at the factory, and the device uses automatic calibration by default. If you experience irregular compass behavior, for example after moving long distances or after extreme temperature changes, you can manually cailbrate the compass." I took this to mean that we'd be spared this chore now. I also wonder if you'd need to recalbrate the compass if you recharge the battery pack in situ without removing it or running it flat? Chris
  10. Stored as geocaches accessed through the geocaching application. Wow that's incredible!! Now all we have to do is find a way to keep them up to date Chris
  11. That's interesting... are they all stored as geocaches and giving you full access to their descriptions, logs, hints pictures etc via the geocaching application? Or are they stored as POIs? (It would help if Garmin would publish the technical details of this new GPSr!) Chris
  12. Fair Point But you seem to have found it easily enough :) Chris
  13. Well all I can add is that my experience with GLONASS shows that it does, with the caveat that I'm in the UK so have good GLONASS coverage. With GPS+GLONASS on my Etrex 20 it puts me far closer to known points than if just GPS is selected. According to Russian System of Differentional Correction and Monitoring's data, as of 2010, precisions of GLONASS navigation definitions (for p=0.95) for latitude and longitude were 4.46—7.38 m with mean number of NSV equals 7—8 (depending on station). In comparison, the same time precisions of GPS navigation definitions were 2.00—8.76 m with mean number of NSV equals 6—11 (depending on station). Civilian GLONASS used alone is therefore very slightly less accurate than GPS. On high latitudes (north or south), GLONASS' accuracy is better than that of GPS due to the orbital position of the satellites. Some modern receivers are able to use both GLONASS and GPS satellites together, providing greatly improved coverage in urban canyons and giving a very fast time to fix due to over 50 satellites being available. In indoor, urban canyon or mountainous areas, accuracy can be greatly improved over using GPS alone. Using both navigation systems simultaneously, precisions of GLONASS/GPS navigation definitions were 2.37—4.65 m with mean number of NSV equals 14—19 (depends on station). Chris
  14. Why do you say that? Others have reported that having twice as many satellites to see gives a more accurate fix when you only have a restricted view of the sky - such as when you are in a deep valley or between tall buildings. And there is also a suggestion that GLONASS gives better coverage in Northern latitudes as it is designed to give a better coverage in Russia! Chris
  15. The "unlimited" geocaches feature refers to Garmin's plan to supply geocaches in a .GGZ file from their own website. So far this is still vapourware and hasn't yet been demonstrated as far as I know. However the 600 series will also hold 12,000 geocaches using .GPX files. You can presumably load 12 PQs using different file names to fill the Oregon 600/650, or use GSAK to handle your PQs, and then combine the 12,000 geocaches you want to find into a single file for the Oregon. Chris
  16. 1) The camera will come in useful for earthcaches where you are asked to prove your visit with a photo, or when you want to record details of the cache or cache location. 2) But the 650 also comes the rechargeable battery pack as standard (and although it can be added to a 600, Garmin UK aren't showing a price for it yet so doesn't seem available here yet) and also 3.5GB of memory rather than 1.5GB. I'm waiting for the 650 to arrive as IMHO the extras are worth the delayed delivery and higher cost. Chris
  17. Wow the 600 series seems incredibly customisable by the end user. Who will be first to issue a decent guide to setting it up I wonder? Will Garmin update the owner's manual to be the equivalent of the ones they provided for the Montana and earlier Oregons or will they leave it to someone else to write?? Chris
  18. That's the same one that I mentioned, all 22 pages of it! (My Oregon 400t has a 56 page owner's manual, and the Montana - with similar firmware to the Oregon 6xx - has a 70 page manual!!) And even in that short document I've found confusing statements... The Garmin website says the 650 and 650t come with the rechargeable NimH battery pack as standard, while it is an option with the 600 (and 600t??). But the manual states "The device operates using the optional NiMH battery pack (650 and 650t only) or 2 AA batteries." So is the battery pack standard with the 650/650t? Can the battery pack be used in the 600/600t? Guess I'll need to wait until the Wiki is finished and the review sites have had a chance to tell us all about it! Chris
  19. Well that didn't take long to read! 22 pages without any mention of GCZ files, the number of geocaches and waypoints it will hold, or detailed descriptions of setting up profiles. I'm surprised they couldn't have released this when they announced the beast in January! Chris
  20. Looks like the Owners Manual is about to be published as the website now has the hyperlinks ready to download it, but clicking on the link generates a "File Not Found" error message at the moment Chris Working now. Great... now for some reading! Chris
  21. [quote name=Team-H ' timestamp='1366058468' post='5236415] 'Quick Start Manual' was posted to the product page today. Hopefully a sign of imminent release... http://support.garmin.com/support/manuals/manuals.htm?partNo=010-01066-20&language=en&country=US Looks like the Owners Manual is about to be published as the website now has the hyperlinks ready to download it, but clicking on the link generates a "File Not Found" error message at the moment Chris
  22. Well that would make sense if they were talking about the financial year 2013/14 and not the "1st quarter 2103" Chris
  23. Meanwhile Garmin UK claim it will be available in the 1st quarter of 2013! You'd think they would have an up to date picture wouldn't you?? And know that the 1st quarter ended on the 31st of Match according to my calender!!
  24. I was wondering whether to replace my Oregon 400t or buy a new camera lens. Guess the camera lens has won now, and the new Oregon will have to wait until Christmas (when hopefully the major bugs will have been sorted and the price discounts arrived!)
  25. I'm just hoping it will arrive in time for Santa to put one in my Christmas stocking! (That's this year!!)
