  1. I currently use BeeLine GPS for off line use with pocket queries. I use GCz and occasionally GateCacher when I have cellular service. I really like the ability to find caches at the spur of the moment and to be able to log my finds from the cache site. I am looking forward to version 2 of both of these programs.
  2. Looking at their site http://www.gpstuner.com/en/products/gps_tuner it is out now. Holy cow, that is some expensive software for a pda!
  3. You are going to need more software. I suggest you get BeeLine GPS.
  4. You need to update the firmware on your phone, Sprint enabled the GPS a long time ago. I am pretty sure all of the phones on your list are the same thing. I too have a Sprint Mogul and I have been using it as my only GPS and it works great. The only drawbacks are it is not as tough as most hand held GPS units and it sometimes has a hard time getting a GPS lock when you can not get a cellular signal.
  5. The Verizon VX6800 is exactly the same phone as the Sprint PPC6800. They both have "real" GPS in them. Verizon has simply chosen to not let their customers have access to the GPS chip. To get around this you can simply in stall a custom ROM made form the Sprint ROM on your Verizon phone.
  6. I have a sprint PPC 6800 (Mogul), here is how it stacks up to your wish list. * A cheaper phone bill (I have the lowest AT&T plan and never use all my anytime minutes) Sprint has plans starting at $30 * Clear reception This depends on where you live * Dirt cheap txt messaging I think it is $.10 per or $10 a month unlimited. * Wi-Fi Check * USB support (for file transfer etc - all though not as important if I get Wi-Fi) Check * GPS with Google Maps (or something comparable) that I can also use for geocaching Check for Google Maps and a ton of other geocaching specific programs. * Sync or access to my contact list and calendar (primarily Gmail and Google Calendar) Check * Gmail (via Wi-Fi or dirt cheap Internet) Check on Wi-Fi or unlimited internet is $15 a month * Ability to add software when the need arises Can't beat windows mobile for the available software * Something that fits easily in my pocket Check Bonus Features (not a must): * A camera (not that important) Check * Custom ringtones Check, any MP3 you want, for free * Mp3 player Check * Voice recorder Check * Super easy Bluetooth use - for headsets and transferring files Check In addition to this the phone can do an amazing amount of other things if you are willing to play around with it. These things are simply incredible. You can also get a VX6800 from Verizon if their service or prices are better in your area. I think you still have to mod a Verizon phone to get the GPS to work though.
  7. I use the Sprint version of the Verizon VX6800. I use BeeLine GPS, it does everything I need it to do. I even use my phone when hunting for a cache instead of a dedicated GPS, so you would be able to hunt on the spur of the moment when you leave your Garimin behind.
  8. I would recommend the VX6800, I have the sprint version of it and love it.
  9. I am in it for the hunt. What annoys me is people who bitch about people who do not want to play the game like they do.
  10. I geocache with a Sprint Mogul and I use BeeLineGPS and like it a lot.
  11. I have a Spirnt Mogul (HTC PPC 6800) with AGPS enabled. I use TomTom 6 to navigate to where I am going, Google Earth to get an idea of where the cache is on a map and I use Bee Line GPS to import and organize my waypoints. I also can go to GC.com to log entries etc. My batteries last a long time using this set up (longer than most hand held GPS units it seems). This truly is a one unit paperless solution. I am surprised more people don't go this route.
  12. I am very new to this so my opinion may not be fully formed yet. I can see how much owners would enjoy reading a great log entry from their cache and I know I enjoy reading them when I am board and just browsing the site. However, you have to understand that some people enjoy playing the numbers game and finding many caches in one day, for them having to write up a long log for each cache would ruin the fun of caching. I don't think either group should ask the other to change to make them happy. Do what you enjoy, let others do what they enjoy. ps. here is a recent log entry from me that I am proud of. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LU...ce-9d0b561d3b30
  13. Welcome, A-GPS is cellular "A"ssisted GPS. What his means is you have a normal GPS chip that gets help from the cell towers when needed, like if you are indoors, so actually it is better than typical GPS and is just as acurate. A-GPS works like regular GPS when a cellular signal is not available. This assumes that Mr. Jobs sees fit to let developers play with the GPS without crippling it. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AGPS for more info. Google Maps can be used for some very simple finds but it is not good enough for anything very difficult. You will have to wait for the 3G to come out to see what programs there are, if any. The biggest drawback is phones are not as rugged as GPS units, see your cracked screen. . Oh, and check in the GPS and Technology section, there are a few iPhone threads already.
  14. Odd, BeeLine works great for me. What phone do you have?
  15. We're cheap But have $500 cell phones.
  16. Nothing to see here, move along. Double post.
  17. OFF TOPIC I have a Spirnt Mogul (HTC PPC 6800) with AGPS enabled. I use TomTom 6 to navigate to where I am going, Google Earth to get an idea of where the cache is on a map and I use Bee Line GPS to import and organize my waypoints. You can create several different databases with as many waypoints as you want (around 1000 waypoints in one database and it gets sluggish). I also use Bee Line GPS when searching for caches, it is very accurate and has a ton of nice features, like looking at cache information and hints offline. I also can go to GC.com to log entries etc. My batteries last a long time using this set up (longer than most hand held GPS units it seems). This truly is a one unit paperless solution. I am surprised more people don't go this route. The biggest drawback to my setup in my opinion is it is not as durable as a hand held unit. However I am very tough on phones so I have Sprints $7 a month insurance plan that replaces a broke, lost or stolen phone no questions asked, I tend to use this about 3 times a year. As an extra bonus when your model of phone is outdated they will upgrade you to the new one when yours breaks. If you are thining about going this route you may want to wait a little while because my phone is being replaced by the HTC Diamond (no keyboard) and the HTC Raphael (keyboard). You may also want to wait to see what aps come out for the new iPhone. BACK ON TOPIC AGPS is as accurate as GPS and does work with the phones radio (cell, data, bluetooth and wifi) turned off. It does not NEED cell towers, it just uses them for assistance.
  18. BeeLine looks nice, but it's not free I like the free aspect of GM. To put in GPS coordinates, go to search, then in the search box put the coordinates straight out of GC. I think if I pull the info up in IE on the phone, I should be able to just cut and paste. I don't know, I'll play with it tonight. I am a little upset about not thinking of trying that. What is it with us PPC people that we refuse to pay for software?
  19. You need to install a modified version of the Sprint ROM with working GPS and EVDO Rev A. Go to ppcgeeks.com for more info. Specifically, go to this section http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=57. You need to use the kitchen to install a new rom. It sounds hard but it isn't that bad, read up and you should be fine.
  20. I have the sprint version of the same phone, I use http://www.visualgps.net/BeeLineGPS/ and it works very well, much better than google maps ever will. You can also import lists of way points. BTW how can you enter way points into google maps, I can't figure out how to do that?
  21. Wow, there is a single device ( no attachments ), with a 3.5 inch display, and GPS receiver for WM? Which one is that? PPC 6800, screen is just under 3.5 inches but it has everything else.
  22. Everything that you guys are dreaming about the new iPhone doing are already possible with a widows mobile device (it is what I use). Also A-GPS should work with out a cell signal (mine does). The cell signal only "A"ssists the GPS. It is possible that Apple would lock out the GPS to only work with a cell signal but I don't know why they would. The biggest drawback with my setup and it would also affect the iPhone is GPS units tend to get dropped, dirty and wet while geocaching and while most GPS units don't mind this cell phones really don't like it.
  23. Good point about my user name already being used in many cache names. I guess I could just ask them to email me the info. I was just looking for an easy way to keep track of them.
  24. I have put together a great waterproof magnetic micro cache container with log sheet and pencil for less $.75. I am going to make up custom tags that tell people what these are and place them in all of the caches I visit. I am asking people to put my user name in the title of the cache after they hide it so I can easily track all of little guys. Has anyone done anything similar to this or have any advice?
  25. Actually click on the surplus button at K&J. I just bought 100 for less than $.25 each shipped. http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=ZD2 Anyone need any magnets?
