one of the best things about the military and geocaching is the TDY(temporary duty) I have got to cache in 10 or more states that I would have not been able to travel to on my own. Geocaching helps take the boredome out of your off-duty time also now i spend more time in the woods than in the bar. I have had some unique experiences that some cachers will never get to do like use a PLGR and a DGR to find caches and while in Idaho we put the coords to a cache in the POS NAV system on a bradley and drove to the cache.(it stopped within 3 feet of the cache) military and Geocaching to me is a perfect fit. CACHE ON!

dont forget the lazy or dificulty factor there are some newbs out there and of course they are a pain because they do stupid stuff, like take travel bugs and then give up on the sport or place a cache with some old pos gps or phone and the coords are way off, but they will go away, become to lazy or get frustrated with a cache that is difficult. I think were good

Technu is the stuff you need, got into something while caching in MS and the local medic had a few packets of this stuff and it seemed to help alot, I ended up buying some now we wipe the family down after our caching trips just to be safe.

CITO! Which means Cache in, Trash out. It is a great excuse as to what you are rummaging around in the bushes for. It is sad, but not all that surprising. We have in the past carried a garbage can in our caching mobile and filled up to 5 bags on a caching outting, you are right it is disgusting all the garbage that people have left along our great country side, wear gloves and cito when you can. As far as the Trekbuddy I am of no help, as far as just signing the log that is perfectly acceptable, in fact most of the time my kids are the only ones who exchange items, although we do drop items that we have picked out in each cash if it is big enough, I drop little army men, EQ13 drops jewels(fake of course) and BB13 drops small rocks with her initials. A micro cache to answer your other question is a 35mm film canister(or similar in size) or smaller container. Good luck, you will most likely enjoy this sport. Cache On!

For the money I would highly suggest the venture Hc it works as well as my legend hcx and Is a little less costly, I wouldnt consider it a low end unit it does have a color screen, a high sensitivity reciever and will hold maps, it has a standard usb port and lasts a long time on 2 AA batteries. Am I crazy? Going to get a Garmin HCx
loudy13 replied to kchunks's topic in GPS technology and devices
I own a Legend HCX and have had great succes with it, in fact the 3 people i cache with liked mine so much the also bought the same reciever, now if you want to save a little money you should consider a venture HC my wife has one of these and we end up in the same spot all the time. CACHE ON -
Alright let me backup a little here. I have placed a few caches already and i understand that i get a email everytime i find one. I am asking if there is a nice simple way to keep all this information on a database such as GSAK or some other handy tool. It is a matter of easines or laziness however you look at it. Thank you for your time everyone

-------GSAK------- Right on!! Well i have GSAK and i obviously havent figured that out yet. So if you would not mind can you give me a little direction.. Thank you

Is there software out there for cacheowners to track there caches? I would like to know how many hits i get on my caches and if there is a trend of maintenance logs, DNF's or of course the favored smiley. If you have heard of any such sofware please let me know I doubt that I am the only one interested in this. Thank you Loudy 13 CACHE ON

I have done most of these example that are listed here, BUT I knew I was a geocacher when I woke up after dreaming about a cache, My wife made fun of me until a few weaks later she also had a caching dream. Cache, On -
From what I understand the H in HC or HCX Stands for High sensitvity reciever and the C stands for Color and the X is expandable I own a legend HCX and A Venture HC they repetedly bring me to the same GZ or very close. With all that said In my opinion anything with a H in name will be the better handheld for in the woods.

You may want to check out craigslist in your area I got a tungsten c for free and i would not cache without it
-
I use GSAK to get the database to my palm I am not sure if easy GPS will work or not. If you get GSAK you have to use pocketquiry's to get the info there.
-
Well I have TOPO in my Legend HCX and I would not cache without it. It has all the roads on it which as you know will keep you from following your arrow across a river and such. It has all rivers, ponds, dams,PWA's which we all know why they are big and so on. I use it to cache and to place caches it is not the map you want if you are going to use turn by turn but I think it is a great asset to caching. CACHE ON
