  1. I had a couple of ferrets and think it would be a great sig item coin if you feel that they are representative of a segment of your life and personality. I love the idea of one dragging a cache into a hidey hole (I can't tell you how many "lost" items turned up in the sofa or other places when I had mine). I like the pawprint with the text around it. Personally, I'm not much into the square shape for coins, but that's just my opinion. For some reason it's not a comfortable shape for me to handle. As was posted, it would be nice if we could see some preliminary artwork; even if it's just rough drafts, but I think overall it's a great idea. I wouldn't be daunted by "it being too much for a first personal coin". I don't know how much time and effort you'ld be willing to put into the design, but I think you're onto something that you would really like and other people would like to collect.
  2. I think Melcrim, Sdarken and STClairC hit the nail on the head by suggesting that your friend include in the log that he found them when he was with you during an earlier trip. Part of the game is determining your own degree of honesty in how you want to play. I believe the two of you found these caches together as a team and there is no reason why he should not be able to log them in now. As was said, some real sticklers might poo poo the logs since they weren't signed at the time, but from my perspective, I wouldn't have a problem with it. I'm just happy to hear that he's coming along and joining the fun.
  3. I just sent an email to Aetoys, asking them if they could post an update on these coins. I have placed orders through them before and have always received exellent service, with quick responses to any questions I might have and prompt delivery. I placed an order for a few sets of these in May and have been anxiously awaiting delivery as have many of you. I have received newsletters from them, apologizing for the delays and saying that they should be in soon, but beyond that I have no information.
  4. I am looking for the new Dragonfly Talisman coins and am hoping to work out a trade or two. 5. I am looking for the Dragonfly Talismans in all colors. I have to get going to a family obligation, but contact me if you have any extra to trade. I don't have a list compiled of available coins, but will try to get on made up tonight and will update this thread.
  6. I tried out the system a couple of times before today. I found that if I forgot to check the sending address is the same as billing or fill that in the page refreshed and I couldn't get past it. It didn't tel me what was srong though. If I also forgot to check the two boxes at the bottom of the page it did the same thing. If tsun hadn't mentioned that in an earlier post I may not have remembered to check those boxes. Hey LadyBee4T: I saw and checked the boxes for "same address" and the two at the bottom. My info copied in the address fields below, so I think the system tried to get me in; it must just have been some kind of hiccup.
  7. I believe I may have been one of the people in the dumped merchandise boat. I placed several items in my cart just before 10:00, and then placed orders for the Dragonfly Talisman's when the sale opened. All looked fine until I went to check out. When I went to pay, the page kept refreshing back to the same page i was just on. It looked like the system was overwhelmed for those few moments and I kept trying to "get in" to make payment when I got a messge for a moment or two saying that the order was complete, except that I think the system dumped the orders on the Dragonflie's. After only a second or two the screen jumped back to the original order screen and it looked like my whole order went for a walk into the abyss. I have not received an invoice from Steph, from Paypal or from the abyss. I sent a couple of quick emails through the customer service link. After sending the first one out, I remembered that I had jotted down the customer ID# and the session # and sent that information along with a complete listing of what I ordered in case that would help search for the order.
  8. These are beautifully done. I've got a couple of coin collectors at work I'll have to show these to them and see if we can place an order without the boss looking
  9. You folks are impressive. Maybe part of the answer to my slower pace is that around these parts, you hike into alot of these cache sites, so in a local park with 3-4 caches, it will take perhaps 2-3 hours to locate them all. If I'm on my way home from work, that's pretty much all the time I can squeeze out of my day. Even in the denser areas, I'd have a hard time doing 13-14 per day. A couple of days ago, I hit 12 in a single day (mostly urban hit and run types) and that was the most I've done yet. Before that, 8 was highest find count for a day. I've also noticed that some people get around faster using mountain bikes, while I'm puttering about on foot, so that doesn't help.
  10. I can't figure out how anyone hits 1000 caches in so short a period of time. I cache almost every day in the New Hampshire/Massachusetts area and think I'm flying with 172 finds as I write this. I really started going out faithfully around July 1st of this year and because of New England Winters, don't expect to go out that often when the snow starts to fly. Now of course it's easy to find untapped clusters of caches around your house and place of employment when you're first starting out, and in July and August I did OK, averaging a few per day. However, there is no way I can sustain this pace as I am already starting to burn out my home turf my goal by year's end is to hit between 250-300. Next year I hope to start a little earlier in the season, but with fewer caches left for me to hit, still anticipate only hitting another 250-300 for the year. As such, I'm expecting my 1000th to be hit in just over 3 years. How does anyone do this in a matter of months?
  11. Hey Web-ling: I'm not a big fan of paper copies as has been stated in this thread previously, but am not as turned off if a "copy" of a geocoin is done well or something creative has been done with a tracking number. I have moved plain paper copies of coins, but hold my nose when doing so. I actually came to this thread today to submit a post about a paper copy of a coin I passed over last night because I just wasn't in the mood to move it. Had it been a real coin or something of quality, I would have picked it up. As this copy was pretty far into the woods, I suspect it will linger there for a long time to come. I enjoy the game of geocaching and try to help things along when I can and after I got home last night I started thinking abut the whole copy thing again. I really hate not moving trackables along because I want to participate, but I have this whole other side of me saying just leave the paper behind and move onto another cache. I suspect many people have the same feelings to one degree or another. I understand the reasons why people don't want to release their originals into the wild, but I cringe a little when I see paper. If I saw that you put some real effort into submitting your own "tag" that was attached to something, I'd move it as if it were a first generation coin and think many others would as well. Anyone else?
  12. Sorry I haven't been back for a couple of days. You're very observant. Yes, I hit the springs with a torch until they were cherry red and allowed them to cool of in a scrunched position, so now the jaws just lay there menacingly, but harmlessly. Several weeks ago, I found one of those balls that you attach to the outside antennae of your car (often in the shape of a Mickey Mouse head). This one was yellow with a smiley face printed onto it. Originally, I was going to dangle the ball with some string over the trap as an additional form of "bait" and was going to call the cache "Baited with a Smiley". I decided to forego the smiley and go with the "Fortune Favors the Bold" name because I love the coin but also to remind cachers to be bold in their lives. Too often people sit back and become couch potatoes. Not that they should just reach out and grab dangerous things - you can be smart about it, but lets not forget that there are adventures to be had. Walking away from something just because you are a little intimidated means you life will be short one smiley.
  13. helped make one just like that. heated the spring until it was weak then welded it open just incase. it was well received but is archived because of constant problems with weed trimmers(long story). OK, it's up and running. I picked up a Victor #3 double longspring trap and attached a mini ammo can to the pan. Check it out: It got published a few days ago and it's already received a few visitors. Next time I'll remember to disable (heat treat) the springs before setting it out The black disc seen in the photo was used to prop up the pan (I should have painted it) and the plastic bag just barely visible held the FTF coin as there wasn't the room needed to put it in the ammo can. The cache is called "Fortune Favors the Bold" and is dedicated to the geocoin by Fox and the Hound.
  14. I think it's in geocacher's nature to be curious.
  15. Test - posted in wrong area. Sorry
  16. I agree with putting the blue frownie faces on the maps, designating the DNF's. I don't think it will discourage any additional people from logging DNFs though beyond those who do not log them now. I also like the idea of a little "notes" icon, if that is possible to do. That way you could click on them to remind yourself of coordiantes or clues found, or whatever; both great ideas. I hope to see them implimented.
  17. I googled "Library, 225 East, 400 South" to confirm my suspicions. I stayed at the KOA in Salt Lake City on a whirlwind 5-week tour of the US a few years ago. Though I had been looking forward to visiting and exploring Salt Lake City, I was apparently in a Democracy where the other partner had more votes than myself and "we" opted to sleep and run. I never saw the areas where the photos were taken, but the force told me that it felt like SLC. I will say though, that I was MISERABLE, listening to the trains as they passed through town ALL night long. I could hear them coming from many miles away and they sounded like they were coming for ME I don't know how you folks that live near them can stand it; to me they weren't just a little annoying, but would have greatly affected the quality of my life if I had to live nearby. I live near a couple of hospitals and the sound of ambulances can be heard from time to time and I learned to tune those out, but at their worste, they aren't anywhere near as loud as those trains, and I don't think they use the sirens late at night. I hope to return to SLC some day to finish my tour of the area. I will say that I'm in love with that part of the country. I have done a couple of cross-country trips (the first time I didn't pass through SLC) and find myself missing the west. I only have about 8-10 travel bugs in the wild (I plan to release 5 more in the next couple of weeks), but all of my TBs have the same mission: to travel to the Four Corners National Monument and then back home to Nashua, so I can live through their travels vicariously - just without the trains
  18. Looks like I'm a late arrival to this party, but I submitted and answer. I've been to this place before, though I wouldn't have recognized it from my own memory. I had a very faint idea/lead to check out though and got it right (I think) on my first try. When I was there before, I was in a bit of a rush and didn't explore too much and I've always regretted that. I hope to return some day and pick up where I left off.
  19. Check out these for novelty micros. They are hand-made out of copper. I picked up two recently, but haven't yet placed them so I don't know how good they will hold up. I'm sure they will be "memorable" however by any geocacher who finds them and can be placed in many tight locations. Great Hides Ammo Can
  20. Congratulations Lordzogat and Tsunrisebey: Tsun; you're contributions to this forum and to the community in general are always incredibly generous and you deserve all the recognition you get and so much more. And Chris from Fox and the Hound is likewise a pillar in this forum and both your efforts are incredibly appreciated. I would like to say to Lordzogat that I agree with Chris that your tutorial was exceptional. It was creative and educational and just the type of thing that enhances the geocoin/geocaching experience for the whole community. Many people are not creative enough to try making your tiles, but you are an inspiration to many others who just need a nudge in the right direction. I raise my virtual glass to you sir.
  21. Hey getcarterscache: Welcome to the forum. This question comes up quite often and a list was made in 2005 to give you a starting point. Check out: Coin manufacturers This list was created in 2005, so there will be a few names that are not on it and a few that may have disappeared, but it will give you something more to check out. Frankly, it might seem like a bit of a hassle to go through all the links, but think of it like a treasure hunt. There are so many coin designs to choose from, that it will boggle your mind. Remember that coin manufacturers will have some coins in stock, but often, they are in the process of waiting for new coins to come in or are taking pre-orders for future stock, so you will have to keep checking in on websites that you like visiting. Another tip is to sign up for their newsletters (always free) that will notify you about new designs that are coming out. Most of the coiners frequent this forum also and will tell you of upcoming offerings, so you'll have to come back here to check as well. I've done business with several of the coiners here and can tell you that I haven't had a bad experience with any of them. they are great people, trying to promote geocoins as art and they take their business seriously. Hope you find some that you like and that you keep coming back to this board to see what's new.
  22. Just a few more passing thoughts: I'm not for excluding folks from testing the waters before they join. If they are new to the game and unsure if they want to fork over $30 to start, I can understand that, but I also think the paying members should get a little bang for their buck. I said in an earlier post that I had a couple of caches that are MOCs. One will probably stay a MOC, though I have "invited" people to come seek it out that were not premium members and work with those people to log their find; but my other one will likely be "declassified" eventually after the PMs have had a fair crack at it. Frankly, because I don't set up that many, I try to stock my caches with a little higher quality swag and I think that the people who have paid to support mother geocaching.com, will tend to be more serious about trading fairly. I have seen caches that I know started out well stocked, but end up with matchbox cars that were dug up from the back yard (still full of mud), broken toys, soiled stuffed animals and other forms of JUNK. My first cache has been up and running for a couple of months now and has had about 30 people come to see it. Almost all of what has been left has been something that I would call tradeworthy. I get fewer cachers because of it being MOC, but I think I'm happier with it as a result. I haven't set out any micros yet, but just contemplated what I would do with those and I think in those cases, where you're only talking about a log, I would release them as MOC for a few weeks and then stand them down for whoever wanted to seek them out.
  23. Be aware, the audit log is not 100% effective. Someone who downloads pocket queries can get the coords for your cache without ever visiting the actual cache page. The GPX files for each cache in the query, contain all necessary information. Thanks for the info. It makes perfect sense and I never gave that a thought, but If these folks are downloadding pocker queries, then at least they are members. For some reason, it make me feel a bit more at ease, but you're right, those wouldn't show up in the audit log.
  24. I have released two caches to date and hope to release a third in several days from now. In one of the threads that pertained to this subject, one cache from Pennsylvania had been raided and the owner ended up doing a MOC as a way to monitor who was looking at the cache page. My first cache was very expensive to set up and after reading the Pennsylvania post, decided that I would to the the MOC status for my own piece of mind. Since then, I have also realized that MOC status is a way to reward people for getting the premium membership. My second cache wasn't as expensive to set up, but I stuck with the MOC status for the rewarding members reasoning. I might take off the MOC status eventually to allow others to find it, and in that way, I reward members and offer it to non-members too.
  25. I haven't been too active on the forum for the past month or two, as I have been spending as much time as possible on the caching trail. I am so glad I checked in today though because I've been waiting for these to come in (the red/silver ones). I am so broke right now it hurts, but did manage to place a small order. Thanks for the update, I love these coins.
