1. A WORD: This is a bit of a detailed topic about server software programming, and some might not know what this is! This is intended for the programmers ammoungst us. Is geocaching ever going to release an API for their website? Being a server programmer I'm so eager to develope some system relating to geocaching. Just looking at how the API's from google and facebook have taken off, geocaching is just one API away from some really awesome stuff! I stumbled accross a really nice blog post by a fellow geocacher, and everything here is so true. Why wont geocaching open an API for the website? Heres the blog post: http://birdhouse.org/blog/2008/08/24/notes-on-open-apis/
2. To get your cache listed but you will need to work with your reviewer to show that it falls within the guidelines. Sometimes exceptions are made, though I think for these guidelines that would have to done through Groundspeak. Thanks for that, thats helpful I think the "hacking" idea works alongside this, as the user would have to visit another website, but they wouldnt need to enter any personal details, sign up - no nasty business *FROWNS AT NASTY BUSINESSESESES* . But I can see it working on the "boundries" of the conditions.
3. thats right, what I got in mind is something known as "SQL injection", a database hacking method. It would involve people navigating to an online form on my server and attempting to hack the form, it would appear like a log-in form. Once they have "hacked" it, it would display the co-ordinates for the cache. Im happy with the idea of very few visitors, I think it would be cool to see one or two exclusive people finding it. Im just worried what the commuinity would feel about it
4. Absolutely not! For those who love puzzles, quite often the harder they are to solve, the better folks like them. I agree. A puzzle with that high a difficulty level might become a lonely cache. Personally, I like lonely caches. Thats awesome then One thing I wanted to do with a cache was create a cache that involved "hacking" a secure webpage of my own. It sounds scary to say I want people to not only look up hacking but actualy hack my own webpage, but Its what I do everyday to make the internet more secure for everyone, but I know people might not like the idea of it at all. Legaly it wouldnt be "hacking" as the page would "simulate" a hackable enviroment, but wouldnt really be hackable. Also the legalistics of hacking would mean it would be fine as I would have given permission. What do you think about that?
5. Hi caching commuinity! Im wondering where the rules or people's suggestions stand on making a geocache that require either alot of research or a prior knowledge in a specific topic area. Basicaly, I build online website systems for a living, and part and parcel of what I do is working with encryption. And I was quite wanting to make a mystery cache that is found by cracking an encrypted string or a programming task (programming is the process of writing software). Im just wondering where people stand on something like this? Is it unfair to create a geocache with such difficulty? Its likly the majority of people wont be able to crack the question.
6. I went to a MEGA event in my town (weston-super-mare, UK) and they had a cache container competition and i was cheeky enough to take some snap shots (they arnt very good pictures, il warn u now!) But here they are: http://learnvb.co.uk/picture_library/09082009094.jpg
7. Do you think Geocaching should record more "statists" about your find and travel bugs, and give more goals for you to aim for? I love the sport, but im a bit of a nerd, and love to see the stats like "found 42" or droped off "12 tags". I think we should have more to aim for, such as "5 finds in one day" or "move a travel bug to another country". Maybe even "release 10 geocoins into the wild". Having unlockable "achievements" in your profile area, where others could look, check and compete against you. I think it may have just been me playing the xbox too much (which is where the idea came from - gamerpoints etc.), but I would love to see a feature that motivates me to do more than just find them - not that im moaning! Find the cache's and moving the bugs are what its all about, but seeing stats, having more to aim for would be amazing. Another feature I would absolutly love to see is a leveling system. I can look at profiles and see at a glance that a certain person has found 1000 caches, but that dosnt tell me much. One person may be more interested in very difficult caches, or moving travel bugs. Maybe when this happens a "point" system calculates a score, which counts towards a "leveling" system. Then at a glance I can see who is really "more into geocaching" than someone else. Its all a fantasy to me really, but thats the kind of stuff I would love to see! What kinds of things would you like to see simular to this?
8. I have a Nokia E71 with walking GPS enabled. Please dont be angry at me for not buying a GPS - there too expensive; the phone saves me money because its on contract and lumped together my PDA, satnav, mobile and my need for mobile internet. Does Wherigo only work for garmin and windows PC? Not the Symbian operating system? Are there no plans to expand the use of the application? Anything anyone knows will be helpful, thank you
9. I'm not sure what else to add really. I want to some how be able to seperate the the different types of logs for trackables. so that I can get a list of cachers that discovered it, cachers who retrieved it and cachers who grabbed it. For each, I just need a list that has the date, the cacher and a link to the log. that's it really, nothing too complicated. I hope that helps - it will be good if you can do anything. give me a couple of months, and I'l be posting some stuff as a reply to this thread, and no doubt a new thread, no promises, but I will try my best!
10. I actualy wrote an article about the virus risk for the USB U3 flash drive, for a virus secuirty website. Its quite important I think, if your interested iv got a copy on my server: http://www.learnvb.co.uk/private/TheUSBvirus.doc Am i allowed to post links like this in threads? Geez, i hope so :S
11. if i were you i'd take them all, but also add a note on the cache page telling others of your intentions - i know id be quite annoyed to travel there to grab a few and be left empty handed. Dont let that put u off though id be very anoyed to find my bug sat there for year and years...
12. yes, I am interested in being able to get a quick list of those who discovered it, in this case the the only person logging it in and out will be me. Im actualy a web designer, and write software for the fun of it (iv done an A-level in it). If you explain what you mean exactly about sorting it I could have a go at writing a program that could sort it for you, obviously for free and everything. Geocaching and writing programs are my hobbies XD
13. Alright, thanks guys, seems like a bad idea then! This is why i wanted to pass it through here. I can see people's fear of the potential danger if someone took hold of the flash drive and re-formated it and used the U3 USB hack to enable an autorun for their own virus. So this wont go ahead! But i may add some forms to my listing of a geocache or travel bug just to make it more fun. Thanks Geocaching Universe!
14. Hi, iv got a query that i would like to run through the forums before i decided to go ahead! Im a freelance software programmer as well as a geocacher, and im planning on using a special type of Flash Drive (U3 Flash Drive) alongside a travelbug. The Flash Drive will has built-in "auto-run" feature, this means when inserted into the computer it will automaticaly run an application on the Memory Stick - without asking for user's permission. The program obviously wont be malicious, i was planning on using it to open a program which will have several fields written inside, and will email me the results. The aim is to be able to record alot of things that are not normaly loged about a travel bug and hopefuly because its different people will be more encouraged to do so. There are endless possibilities for it: *recording IP addresses to help located where to travel bug is being kept *uploading of images to my own server directly *more ideas please? Obviously i would warn the user with perhaps a small laminated card attached to the Flash Drive about what it does. The question i want to ask - is this ethical? Is this against the "rules"? A cacher will still be able to log to travel bug without also doing the additional Flash Drive logging. I am willing to - if this goes ahead ethicaly etc. release the software for free to GeoCacher to use if they wish and create a simple user guide of "how". Any comments or idea of what the program on the stick could do will be loved - thanks Geocachers!
15. Hey, I was wondering...can you buy a travel bug, write the number onto something you've made, like a coin, then use that for tracking? Would people get funny about that, or is there some crazy law im breaking? Any help would be brilliant - Kirgy9
16. iv been caching a while now with 31 under my belt, iv been using my tomtom, drawn maps and used head hunting. But now i think this is more of a sport for me than a phase, so i want to buy a GPS of some sort. But i dont know what to look for, im looking for something: - robust - allows Wherigo geocaches - is otherwise basic and im looking for idea of places to find them, im interested in new ones and second hand ones. Anyone that can guide me would be amazing, im really looking forward to proper geocaching and not this tedious caching! Thank you -Kirgy
17. Im concidering publishing a travel bug with an attatched book where people could draw or write anything they want in it; poems, art, or just a simple "Hello". And i would try to encourage users to take pictures of the book's content if they have a chance. What do you guys think of this? Is it a good idea? One problem i was thinking is its waterproofness, but i think a foodbag of some sort might help. Any advice, or ideas would be very helpful!
