  1. Most of the "epic" caches around here involve some level of hiking. Some just a 5-10min hike, others are over an hour hike. To get a general idea of some of the previous award winning caches, check my bookmark lists. Are you considering the entire LA area, or closer to LAX, downtown, etc?
  2. This weeks newsletter had all the Recent Geocaches listed correctly by distance. Thanks for fixing this minor bug!
  3. It is based on what you have set in your forum control panel. Click on My Controls at the top then go to Board Settings. Adjust as necessary. Click link to board settings: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...rCP&CODE=04
  4. I've seen some 05+ Tacomas on some pretty tough trails... Burro Schmidt Tunnel would be one of the recommendations I'd offer. It is off the 14 just past Red Rock. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCF441 Manzanar is a good place to stop and learn about history. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC1153
  5. Check the previous logs by the CO on May 18 and May 20. Those seem to give additional clues about WP1. Sounds like they used some natural camo like a piece of bark glued to a bison tube or something like that. Previous finders who had trouble with WP1 were able to find WP2 just by using the hint. Sounds like the previous logs really hold the spoilers needed to solve this one.
  6. And this story in a nutshell is why many people dislike looking for multi-caches. All it takes is one stage to be missing.
  7. Snippets from my most recent email: The random distance repeats all through the list.
  8. Markwell has a good Pocket Query tutorial here: http://www.markwell.us/pq.htm
  9. Bump I've noticed this is happening again on both this weeks and last weeks newsletter.
  10. Nope, that is how it works. You cannot assign attributes until the cache is submitted. Then at the top of the page there is a handy link to go add the attributes you want.
  11. Copy/paste from a previous post-
  12. The most obvious part of planning a day like that is properly planning your route. Just finding the next nearest cache willy-nilly makes for hard work and poor use of time. When planning my 50+ (an quite often 100+) cache days, I generate a GSAK list of all the caches, GPS loaded with hints at quick access, PDA/Phone for on-site intel plus my geocaching bag with tools and other accessories needed during the hunt. Here is a copy of one of the lists I made: http://www.showstop.org/geocaching/list/tarot.html
  13. It means the finder was to lazy to write a decent log.
  14. If you go through wooded areas a lot, then the compass is helpful. If you almost always have a clear sky view, then turn off the compass. Saves headaches and battery life.
  15. The LA cachers split into about 8 different groups Cache Addicts Socal 4x4 Geocachers SFV Geocachers Conejo Cachers IE Cachers West Coast Cachers Hi Desert Cachers KNOCK group Some are listed here, others are not. There is no central website people visit any longer. Many of the groups have websites and can be found in the sticky topic at the top. Others meet up on Facebook or Yahoo Groups.
  16. I use Krylon Olive Drab camo paint to completely repaint the ammo can. Then, depending on where I place it, I add other paint shades and textures. Finally I add a Geocaching stencil to the side usually in tan color. http://www.sissy-n-cr.com/store2.shtml

  18. While some micro/nano caches would be seemingly impossible to label, larger caches are almost a must. Consider the liability of placing an ammo can somewhere in the wild and have it discovered by a muggle. They freak out and the bomb squad is called in. Clearly labeling the outside as a Geocache might not keep it from being blown up, but it at least shows you took the time to remove misc military markings and re-purposed the container for Geocaching. For ammo cans and the like, Sissy N CR makes a nice stencil to mark containers. http://www.sissy-n-cr.com/store.shtml

  20. Your TB question post? http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=246940 Easier way to find that would have been to visit your profile page and click the link to find recent forum posts by this member.
  21. I'm always appreciative of a Geocacher that assists with any maintenance needs on my caches. If the log is full/wet/torn and they replace it, I'm grateful for the assistance. Doing this kind of maintenance requires no prior permission on my part. Other cache owners may react differently, but it seems most don't have an issue with maintenance assistance like you mention. If you have replaced the log, it doesn't require a NM log unless there are other outstanding issues that still need to be addressed.
  22. I use a Palm Tungsten and the Spinner and Plucker programs to load cache into onto it. The Spinner/Plucker method is a bit complicated to learn, but this page spells it out pretty well: http://www.geocacher-u.com/resources/paperless.html Another option is to upload limited additional data to the Garmin in the description field. This is limited to 30 char. Use special characters and edit as necessary in GSAK. http://www.gsak.net/help/hs8100.htm And check out GSAK if you haven't already.
  23. There are lots of people that actively cache in Orange County. However few visit the forums here. Your best bet would be to meet up with some people at an event to discuss GPS units and hopefully join somebody in a cache hunt. On May 1st, there are a number of events happening since it is the 10th anniversary of Geocaching. There is an event scheduled in Rancho Santa Margarita. Here is a link to that event: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...c3-5caa969b506d
  24. The standard response to this would be to contact your local reviewer and discuss the situation with them. 23 caches isn't a huge amount, but they will probably want to pre-approve the caches so they just have to make them active when you want them released. Depending on their schedule, they may or may not be able to release at the exact time you want, but discuss the options with your reviewer.
