  1. Even the military doesnt use mils much. For normal land nave we stick to degrees. Mils are for when you need to be really accurate like calling in artillery. And even UTM and MGRS are different, they are the same basic idea but dont try interchange them, bad things will happen. Grid North is simply explained as straight up on a map. The grid refers the MGRS grid laid on on the map.
  2. I get a giant red x over the area whenever I turn the topo on...what is that?
  3. I am wanting to print out some maps to do Land Nav. training. I have Mapsource set in MGRS but is there a way for it to print the grind lines on the map for me?
  4. I havent got to use either one but we carry suunto at the store I work for and there lit says that the x10 has better battery life and a better receiver, I cant find any realy specs but Im assuming the x10 has a high sensitivity receiver while the x9 does not.
  5. Just to be clear, clout cover makes little to no difference to GPS reception the frequency chosen for GPS was chosen specifically because weather has almost no effect on it. Also trust me, military GPS are no more accurate than any of the receivers that civilians have. I would rather have a good mapping civilian GPS than the plugger that the Army gives me, most are so old that they dont even have good high sensitivity receivers. "Or just remember, there is no such thing as accuracy in a handheld GPSr. The Government would not allow it" and the government no longer regulates the GPS frequency spectrum. The opening up of all GPS signals to civilian use in 2000 was what actually allowed geocaching to work, before that no handheld GPS was accurate enough to work because the government did interfere with the signal back then.
  6. Ah, but that would imply that Garmin actually admitted the existence of the problem in the first place. If it never existed, we don't have to admit to fixing it... They have admitted it, my unit is being replaced for it and several other users on the forums here have had them replaced.
  7. I wrote a letter to Garmin last week expressing my disappointment in not only the Colorado as a unit but also Garmin's lack or support for the unit. After I did not hear anything for over week I emailed them again on Tuesday night. Yesterday morning I received an email apologizing and saying that my email just slipped through the cracks. Later on Wednesday I received a call from Garmin support saying that my email problem had been passed down along with my warranty request about my unit. They wanted to replace my 300 with a new 300. The real kicker is that because of my problems with my email they were paying for the shipping and throwing in CN 09. As disappointed as I have been in Garmin over the last few months I have to admit that they will do what they can to make a customer happy. We will see how my new 300 behaves but Garmin has definitely impressed me with their costumer service.
  8. I use a mac but I have parallels to run windows on it. When I attempt to use my colorado through parallels to download maps from mapsource it says that the device is in use by another program and I need to quit that first. I am assuming that the program which is using the colorado is on the mac side but I cant figure out what it would be. Anyone got an idea?
  9. I ordered and shield but before it here my colorado suffered a few scratches... anybody have a way to polish them off before i put the shield on?
  10. You dont have to buy a full version of windows to run bootcamp, you can use the upgrade version which is around $100.
  11. Go with the Colorado, the last update was great and the units with hardware issues seem to have disappeared. I love mine and I would highly recommend it.
  12. Is there a way to use the colorado with software such as Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler to track yourself on the computer. Obviously whenever I plug the GPS in it automaticaly goes to the normal input mode and isnt recieving a GPS signal. If anyone can tell me how to make this work I would appreciate it. thanks
  13. I have nothing but good things to say about my colorado. I have none of the bugs that anyone is reporting, my first day out with the colorado was a thunderstorm and I didnt have a single problem with water leakage. I would say go ahead and get one. Think about all the colorados that have been sold, compared to this number the number of complaints is relatively small and growing smaller with the latest updates. Personally I think that it is a great unit, but as you can tell you will receive any different opinions here. The only advice that I have is to take the jump and if you get a defective unit work with Garmin to get a new one.
  14. Can someone walk me through how to delete the geocaches from my colorado. I saw teh FAQ where it said you had to load a new GPX file without the geocache. How do I do this?
