  1. After talking it over with Elias, it appears that the block of my IP was unintentional, and has since been removed. Unfortunately, we did lose about a week's worth of logs. Because of the way my site gets logs, there's really no good way to get those logs, short of individually putting them in via the Missing Logs page. So, you'll have to put in any caches you did over the past week by hand. We also did have some talks about the future and possible better interaction between sites like mine and the geocaching.com database, and they sound promising. So that's definitely good news as well. Finally, all this has given me a second wind of sorts to work on the stats page. The one thing that I think really needs to be added is some sort of automated way to change usernames. It currently takes about 2-3 minutes to do that. Of course that's not a big deal, but most of the time I can't really take the time out of whatever I'm doing to do that. I can't really make it fully automated, because of the following scenario - what if EvilJoeCacher comes in and enters into the form that his "old" username was BruceS. Then all of Bruce's logs get deleted and moved over to EvilJoeCacher's name. Unlikely, but definitely possible and definitely not a good thing. Anyone got any good suggestions?
  2. Hey guys. I know that I have manned the stats page for quite awhile now (about a year or so?) but I think it's about time for me to pass the mantle on to someone else. I'm just finding myself with no time or desire to respond to people's requests and make updates. I think that I'd be able to help out with adding features - but is there anyone else with the time, skills and energy to be the point-man? I don't want the stats page to go away - the reason I created it was because it filled a need that *I* had, and I still want to check things. The site runs with a MySQL database and uses Perl for the front-end. I've had some thoughts about porting it over to J2EE and JSP but again - no time. So, anyone interested?
  3. You know what I would really love to see - adding a link to add the cache to your watch list on the thanks for logging page. I go to log a cache, and then afterwards it tells me "Hey thanks for logging it, blah blah " and then there's a link to go to that cache page. I'd like a 2nd link - to the add to watch list link. That would just save me (and everyone else) one page-view. Admittedly, it's not a HUGE deal to go back to the cache page and add it to the watch list, but we're talking about something that could be added in 2 minutes, so I think the tradeoff is worth it.
  4. You'll also need to send me an email if you want your stats updated on the stats page. Give me your old and new usernames and I can make the change.
  5. Well, the reason I combined them with hides is for one reason. Let me give you an example: In some City, there are 100 caches. Joe Cacher has found 90, and hidden the other 10. Jane Cacher hasn't hid any, but has found 92. Joe can't find any more, without logging finds on his own caches. I wasn't trying to get in to some of the more complicated "Cache ratings" systems, just trying to represent opportunity.
  6. Okay - I was working on my stats page and was thinking about something. I wasn't sure which way to do this so I thought I'd see what people thought about this. I don't want to turn this into one of those flame-war threads on whether stats are good or not. If you just cache for the enjoyment or whatever, that's fine and I respect your opinion. Nevertheless, there are those who enjoy the counting and/or like seeing their name climb the leaderboard. So, for those people... I was thinking about archived caches. Currently, my site counts all caches, archived and non-archived for leaderboard purposes. But I was thinking that that might not be so fair. For example, in Cincinnati, there are 11 caches that I have found that someone starting out now couldn't find (because they're archived). So even if Joe Newbie found every cache out there, he could never catch me. Similarly, DLiming has 4 caches in Cincinnati that he's found that were archived before I got to visit them. So I can't catch him (unless he goes inactive). Vote and comment - should I:
  7. You can use my stats page to do something similar, from the Log List page. You can view the last logs in a particular area (state, city, etc.) and click on the links to open up the cache page in a new window. Example: http://www.insidecorner.com/geocaching/stats/loglist.cgi?city=Cincinnati&check1=on&check2=on&check3=on&check4=on
  8. What's your most consecutive days with a found geocache? You can check it out from your My Cache page if you choose to view all logs. My personal high is 4 days, which I have done twice. Dec. 26-29, 2001 Jan. 2-5, 2002 If I got up off my butt and did a cache in the 5 hours left tonight, I'd also have 4 consecutive days Sep. 23-26, 2002 I'm sure that's not a record (or probably even close) but whaddaya got?

  10. You could try Cinti Vista - it gives a nice view of downtown from a large hill in N. Kentucky Of course, the only "must do" cache is Mario's Tower - World's Most Difficult Geocache but you'll probably not have time to do it.

  12. Hey my dad's first (only) hidden cache is called Between a rock and a hard place

  14. I don't have a particular problem with the log being limited in length (though I agree that I wish it were higher), but I just figured that you should get some sort of "nice" error page as opposed to the generic 500 error. Admittedly, it's not a HUGE deal but I thought I'd mention it
  15. I tried to write a log for Cemetary Ridge http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=37102 And it was too long (I think) but submitting it gave me a 500 Internal Server Error. It didn't really say anything that made me think that was the problem except for something that said "String or binary data would be truncated". I broke it up into 2 logs and it worked fine.

  18. Mario's Tower has 13 legs, but due to the puzzle nature of the cache, it's not intended to be completed in one day.
  19. A bug on the map page - locationless caches still show up on the map as their coordinates that they used to have (even though those coordinates are no longer shown). Also, as I saw earlier mentioned - caches hidden no longer show up as checked.
  20. So I was noticing that Locationless caches have their own image http://www.geocaching.com/images/cache_types/12.gif but it's the same image as a virtual http://www.geocaching.com/images/cache_types/4.gif Is this intentional? Will there be a new image type for locationless? Am I jumping the gun?

    Bug?

I've noticed that too - but it was intermittent and I expect that if I logged back out and in it would fix it. Why does that happen?
  22. I voted for making it one multi-cache. Here's a way I'm planning on making a multi-leg cache but having it be 3 separate caches. There will be 2 intial caches. Stage 1 and 2 will have the correct coords on geocaching.com, and will also contain 1/2 the coordinates each to Stage 3. Stage 3 will be listed on geocaching.com with incorrect coordinates - you'll have to get the real ones by visiting stage 1 and 2. Does that make sense?
  23. Weird - I logged out and back in and it seems to work now
  24. I'm noticing that I can't view my archived caches. For instance, http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=12642 is a link off my My Cache page (after clicking on show archived) as a cache I've hidden. It takes me to the Hide/Seek page The strange thing is that just about 30 minutes ago I could swear that it was working?
  25. Okay I think it's fixed. Actually this new page layout makes things much cleaner on my end :-). I also have to thank my friend Mike Haboustak, for providing me the Parser code that is so much better than the crap I was using - it made changing things SO much easier. I mention his name of course, just so that when he does a Google Search on his name, this page will come up . Let me know if there are any bugs that I missed.
