  1. Hey. Yes, the site is down, and as linked earlier in this thread, it's not coming back. Mike Haboustak (the person linked in the other thread) is a friend of mine and it's his server (more or less). So... what now? Dunno. I believe Mike burnt a CD of the old hard drive, so the data exists out there somewhere. Though I'm sure the database could be organized better, and I'm sure that there are numerous errors in it. It might even be better/easier to start from scratch. Which brings me to the next dilemma. I've had various offers of help / taking it over, with various degrees of enthusiasm, and don't know how to respond. I want to make sure that whoever takes it over has the know-how to do it, and the desire to keep doing it. The worst case would be for me to hand it off to someone, and then have that person fade into oblivion. I think that the best idea is geocaching.com to do it, but as others have pointed out, I'm not holding my breath. Next best would be some way for geocaching.com to allow others to interface their data. I had heard from Elias a while back that he was planning on implementing this at some opint, but have not heard further. I don't want stats to go away - I'd like *someone* to take it and go with it. Wanting stats was the whole reason I built the site in the first place nearly 2 years ago. I just know that someone can't be me. dan. regoarrarr

  3. Looks like Tilly and Toby Tortoise tied for first today! Congratulations to both of them! I feel extra proud as I was part of their grand victory, carrying the bugs 220 miles from Cleveland, OH to Cincinnati, OH and then into KY. Now let's see how many bugs can make it there (eventually)
  4. I'd like to see a link on the nearest cache page - when you click on the nearest caches to a cache to be able to filter. Or maybe whenever - the page should know whether or not it's filtered by finds and hides, and link to the other one in case you want to switch back and forth. Example Maybe up in the right top corner, it says: Results: FILTERED / Not-Filtered or Filtered / NOT-FILTERED with one of those (the one you're not one) being a link.
  5. Just an update on Toby and Tilly tortoise. They (along with 2 other bugs that I have in my hand) will hopefully be heading south with Draegon tomorrow to Lexington. I mean hey it's not Texas but at least it's 100 miles or so
  6. Let us not forget Mario's Tower - world's most difficult geocache
  7. I checked my logs, and it looks like my high is 295 caches in a 365 day period (5/17/2002 to today). Though I only did 2 caches from 5/17/2002 to 6/27/2002, so if I do more than 7 before June 27th, then I'll go over 300 for a year period. I think I can handle that []
  8. I delivered a hand made stamp from Franszolo in Cincinnati to EliJoMikMini in WV via geocaches. I picked it up in Cincinnati and took it with me and placed it in a cache in WV, where Eli... picked it up.
  9. The Great Escape has been initiated!! Web-ling is visiting Cincinnati from Texas, and I drove around grabbing a few bugs here, and the handoff was successful. 7 bugs will be making their way from OH to TX (via KY, TN, and AR). The 7 lucky bugs are: Cannonball Road Rescue Heavy Chevy Racing Pika Bug 2003 Cannonball Mini Cooper Give Peace a Chance Cannonball Runner Vince The Invisible Man's X-Wave Scooter I feel especially bad for Toby and Tilly Tortoise. I wasn't able to get them in time to hand them off to Web-ling before he left, and he said he won't have time to drive by to where they are on his way home. I feel bad because I put them where they are to get them a bit further south, but if I had just held on to them, then they could be heading to Texas. Oh well, hopefully they will get another chance. While browsing through this thread, I noticed a post from the owner of Racing Pika, mentioning that she had a chance to set another bug back but chose not to do so, and was therefore hoping for some good karma for her bug. Well here it is!!!
  10. So the ruling on those 5 bugs is that they need to go back to PA? If someone takes them there and then back to Cleveland by this weekend, I can take them to Cincinnati with me (another 200 miles or so SW)
  11. Yeah - start at any state, and yes, bugs would be released at a certain date, or any date after. I'm envisioning this as a race yes, but more than a race. More of a records page for bugs going to all 48 or 50 states. so yes it would be a race to see who could do it first, but also a website where you could track the bug that visited all the states with the least number of caches visited, or the least (or most) mileage, etc.
  12. That brings up a question I had about the race. This bug went from NY-PA-OH-NY. So, can its next state visited be Indiana (adjacent to Ohio) or does it have to first re-visit a state adjacent to New York (its current state). The example that I thought of was if I had one in KY and took it to OH and then IN, would it be able to visit MO (adjacent to KY) or would it first have to visit a state that is adjacent to IN (like Illinois) before being able to move to Missouri?
  13. quote:Perhaps amend this bit to "bugs could enter at any time after the start" ... or else you might get a TB joining you that has already hit 12 states on the first day of the race. Right. I had thought of that actually - just forgot to post it. What I meant was that any bug could start whenever it wanted to, but only states visited after the start date would be counted towards the Race.
  14. So I just recently became aware of the Cannonball Run travel bug race. Since I don't really follow the forums all that often, the first I heard of it was when I picked up 2 racers (Tilly and Toby Tortoise) in Cleveland this weekend. Very cool concept, and of course it got me thinking about similar races that I could do. Ever since TBs came out, I've been interested in trying to get a bug to visit all 50 states. I even made a website of a bug I was going to release with that goal. Never did send him out but that's beside the point. I'm certain I'm not the only one - I have definitely seen other bugs with that goal. But has any bug ever completed it? I tried to search around for one, but didn't see one that had even come close. So I am proposing a Race Through America. The goal for each entrant (bug) will be to visit all 50 states (or perhaps just the continental 48, no offense to Hawaiian or Alaskan cachers). There would be a website, similar to the one for Cannonball Run, that would list the leaders in various categories such as: States visited (for those still in progress) Fastest time to visit all states Slowest time Furthest distance Least distance Most caches visited Least caches visited (could a bug do it in only 50 caches?) etc. The cool thing about this race is that while I would set a starting time, bugs could enter at any time and start from any place. A bug that started in New England might take an early lead, but peter out when it had to visit the western states. So any thoughts, comments, or ideas?

    Clues???

For Mario's Tower I devised a website that lets you take clues if you want them. These could be clues to the puzzles, or clues to the actual cache locations. I decided that each clue would be worth a certain amount of points, and each stage found worth 100 points. So the more clues you use, the less your total "score" is for solving it. Some people didn't care, and just wanted to solve it. Others have decided that a "perfect" score was important to them and have as such avoided the clues. I let the scoreboard stand for itself. Obviously this isn't possible for all types of caches or if one doesn't have handy access to a website, but that's my experience
  16. quote:I think that if you are going to hide 10 stand alone caches in one park, it had better be one big park. Really big. Super honkin' big. Also, I don't know where the individual stage caches are for Sith 2, but the ones for Sith 1 were not in the same park. http://home.fuse.net/Docman/sithimpossible.html There were 2 in Mt. Airy Forest (5 miles NW of downtown Cincinnati) 3 in Big Bone Lick State Park (25 miles S) 1 in Devou Park (2 miles S) 1 in Pierce Park (20 miles E) 1 in Woodland Mound (10 miles E) 1 in Hillcrest Cemetery (10 miles E) 1 in Kellogg Woods (10 miles SE)
  17. quote:From what I'm getting, the 3 month wait wasn't for a response to questions about this last cache, it was about getting his own personal cache approver because he felt the one that approves his region is out to get him. Well I don't know. You could be right - I don't have all the details anyway. But in any regard, it doesn't matter I think. I mean that's not the issue at least in my mind. Yes, it was inappropriate to say geocaching.com discriminates. Yes, he probably could have handled this differently. But it doesn't change the fact that in the end, it's just hurting the rest of us Cincinnati cachers, who just want to cache. I think that if you polled some of us, you'd find that we think Team Jedi has done some of the coolest caches in the area. I know I think that. I personally don't care if it's 1 or 11. I'll do it either way. I do think that more people would find stages of it if it was 11, but whatever. I think it should be posted as 11 because that's the way similar caches have been approved. But if, in the end, it's only posted as 1, whatever, I don't care. I just want to cache.
  18. Yes, there are 2 separate cache series being described. The first was called Movie Madness. I'm not entirely sure how that one worked. The one in question right now was called Sith Impossible 2. You can read about the original Sith Impossible series at: http://home.fuse.net/Docman/sithimpossible.html As someone pointed out, in the overall scheme of things it doesn't really matter whether they are 1 or 11 caches. People will probably still hunt them anyways. But if they're separate, I'd say more people would hunt them. Main reason being if I'm going to Park A, I might check the nearest caches list. If they're all one cache sheet with some other coordinates, I might not realize that these caches are here. They have (at least the Sith Impossible 1 series had) logbooks, and while I don't remember if they had things to trade, they were certainly big enough to have items to trade (they were medium sized GladWare). So, if that's an issue, which I don't think it is, they could. It's unfortunate that the other thread got very emotional with attacks being wielded both ways. It's obvious that Team Jedi is very emotional about the subject and frustrated about his caches not being approved, and not getting any response from geocaching.com over a period of several months. Could he have handled this better? Probably. But that doesn't change the fact that he has a legitimate beef. While I agree with Jeremy on the complaint that geocaching.com discriminating against the handicapped is not valid, I still think that we should be able to work this out. As a local cacher, I just want to find the caches. I hope we can get this resolved however it needs to be soon.
  19. I moved the discussion about whether it's appropriate for these caches to be approved as several in a series (or only as one multi) over here And to answer the questions - yes, each of the individual caches have their own logbook. I don't remember if there were things to trade, but they were in GladWare containers and certainly big enough to contain things to trade, should that be the issue (which I don't think it is)
  20. Okay. I'm moving the discussion over from this other thread, because as others have said, it's not really about discrimination against handicapped children, at least IMO. But there is a legitimate question I think as to why these caches were not approved. I'll copy a bit of what I wrote in the other thread. Last summer, Team Jedi made a series of caches called Sith Impossible. You can read more about it at http://home.fuse.net/Docman/sithimpossible.html It was quite possibly one of the best cache series done here in Cincinnati. The basic gist of it was that there were 10 different caches around town. Each one could be sought via GPS lat/lon coordinates, or there were also letterboxing-type clues that you could do it with. Each cache had 4 or 5 word stamps in it, along with a logbook. There was a final cache printout, and you stamped each of the word stamps on your printout. When you got all 10 caches and 53 (I think) stamps, that spelled out the location of the final cache. Again, this was and is one of the best cache series in Cincinnati. So the issue if I understand it is that now Team Jedi wants to make Sith Impossible 2. As I understand it from Team Jedi, the approver (Erik) will not approve them, as he says that it is a multi cache and wants it to be one cache (instead of 1 per stage). My understanding of multi-caches is something that is all in the same park, that can usually be done in one day. My Mario's Tower is a good example, as well as many others. This IMHO is different. It's 10 caches that can act as stand-alone, but are also part of an ongoing series. I feel they should be qualified as separate caches. As an example, if I put 10 GladWare containers in the woods in various parts of town, stuck a few things in them and a logbook, they would be approved without another thought I bet. Just because they are part of an inter-connected series is no reason to ban them I think. So, what does the general populace think?
  21. Let me take a crack at explaining this - as I live in the same hometown and have talked with Team Jedi about this a bit. It's 10 caches that can act as stand-alone, but are also part of an ongoing series. I feel they should be qualified as separate caches. Is there a way we can petition someone about this? I thought I remembered from back in the day being able to submit a poll like "Should this cache be approved", mainly for virtual and locationless. Is this still a valid option? The other cache series he is talking about was called Movie Madness. This was the same kind of thing, but instead of clues to the final cache, each stage would have a Movie still in it. You would then go to his website and match up what movie it was from, and use that to get the final cache coordinates. I think what Erik was saying there was that if a cacher guessed wrong they could end up on Private Property. Team Jedi's response was that they had already thought of that and the entire cache was on east Fork State Lake property. But it was still not approved. Again, I have not talked with Erik, my only info comes from having talked with Team Jedi, so I don't presume to speak for the actual reasons these caches were not approved, if they differ from the above. Anyway, thanks for listening.
  22. Out of my stats database, this is what I got. A Disclaimer - sometimes my stats lose some logs when they're logged a bunch right in a row, and also I don't know how many of these were virtuals or locationless. 23. So, I did a little numbers crunching, but I don't feel like making a graph, so you'll have to deal with just the raw numbers. +-----------+-------+ | dayname | found | +-----------+-------+ | Saturday | 107 | | Friday | 47 | | Thursday | 46 | | Monday | 43 | | Wednesday | 35 | | Tuesday | 27 | | Sunday | 7 | +-----------+-------+ So it can be seen that (obviously) Saturday is the #1 day for caching for me, which makes sense. Also it makes sense that Sunday is last, since I very rarely will cache on Sundays. I would have expected that the weekdays would be pretty evenly distributed, so it's interesting that Tuesday (and to a lesser extent Wednesday) lag behind. +------------+-------+ | dayofmonth | found | +------------+-------+ | 26 | 34 | | 8 | 24 | | 1 | 21 | | 20 | 20 | | 27 | 18 | | 23 | 13 | | 3 | 12 | | 30 | 12 | | 4 | 12 | | 5 | 12 | | 19 | 10 | | 29 | 10 | | 15 | 10 | | 18 | 9 | | 9 | 9 | | 10 | 8 | | 28 | 8 | | 17 | 7 | | 21 | 7 | | 2 | 7 | | 22 | 6 | | 7 | 6 | | 31 | 6 | | 16 | 6 | | 24 | 5 | | 12 | 5 | | 6 | 4 | | 14 | 4 | | 13 | 4 | | 25 | 2 | | 11 | 1 | +------------+-------+ The 26th of the month leads the way, with 34 finds, buoyed by December 26ths with 21, including my all time high day of 19 found, on Dec. 26, 2002.
