  1. I was the reviewer before last :-) Red Feather Duster
  2. Accurate coordinates must be used and provided for all caches, BUT for multis and mysteries, those coordinates would be provided only as hidden waypoints (not visible to the public). However, cachers must still have some way to deduct those coordinates from some information given. Simply giving coordinates "in the general area" and then a clue to zero in on the hiding spot without any other way to get more accurate coordinates is not ok. An example of what could be acceptable is giving cachers a set of bogus coordinates, but also a precise distance to the actual coordinates (without telling them the direction). But even this is somewhat borderline. You're right that deliberately misleading cachers with bad coordinates is just wrong. DFX is correct. Although 'An example of what could be acceptable is giving cachers a set of bogus coordinates, but also a precise distance to the actual coordinates (without telling them the direction)' is not correct. The direction would also have to be given so accurate coordinates could be projected.
  3. Depends on the cache type. A traditional cache must be at the published coordinates and these must be accurate. A mystery/puzzle or multi type can have the cache some distance away from the published coordinates provided there is an element of GPS usage to locate the cache i.e. following some photos or having a general rummage around would not be allowed.
  4. The only person responsible for your safety whilst caching is YOU! If you look at a situation and assess it to be too dangerous then it is very simple, DON'T DO IT!
  5. Having bought a P7 and P3 combo from Maplins at Christmas I just can't see how you need more light
  6. Hi, Before buying any maps, try these free ones first. You may not need to buy anything.
  7. You may have a GPX file left on the unit. Have a look in /Garmin/GPX for any files. These can either be on the unit or the memory card. This is a long shot, but check there isn't a geocache_visits.txt file on the memory card. I don't think the unit would create these, but the previous owner might have. Andy
  8. The day was great. It started with the breakfast meet and a chance to chat over coffee and cakes. There was a good mix of those doing the series and those who weren't. I was off just after 09:00 with Grizzly, Snapper and Racheal. Racheal left us at number 15 which came round very quickly and was a shame. The next milestone at number 61 was very welcoming and the coffee went down well. By number 104 my legs were telling me that they had had enough and it was a great sight to see Ray walking through the car park with his usual smile. As has been said, each cache in isolation is nothing special, but as a collection they are just great, add to that fun company and the dry(ish) weather, and the day was perfect (even the mud didn't get us down). I'm just amazed we stayed on our feet without slipping over. Many thanks to metal-bijou for organising the event and to Mel and Ray for their usual generous hospitality.
  9. I guess that owner was very trusting.

  11. The concern I would have is that you would be able to compile a directory of mobile phone numbers of the finders.
  12. I've got a 550 and an addiction to tech. I'll wait for Russian Bird support on the 650 and then make the move.
  13. If it is two people, I guess Lord & Lady Boogie
  14. I've just bought a 5W CREE single LED head torch on Ebay for a tenner. It is very impressive.
  15. I know of a pair of Essex cachers who have found over 2,200 with just a map and compass
  16. Whilst I wouldn't want to see one discarded cache left in the countryside, there is a word of caution to be said. Just because the cache is not listed on this site, there are (shock / horror) other sites which it may be listed on. Even if it is not listed elsewhere, the cache is still owned by the owner and anyone recycling the cache could be accused of theft.
  17. Have the rats eaten the hamsters? Move over Freddie Star.
  18. At least the slugs don't have sheepskin trolleys.
  19. If logbooks aren't your thing, have a look at challenges instead, they might float your boat better. http://tinyurl.com/3hwpzs4
  20. One man's dross is another man's gold, so everybody can apply their personal 'filter' and everybody can be happy Great post.
  21. If you mean showing the progress bar at the bottom (pausing halfway through) as if new data has been transferred, mine is doing the same thing. Which makes booting up a bit slower than it used to be. Yeah, that. And it makes booting a lot slower (and eats battery), with having close to 5000 caches loaded. This is the "fix", albeit a little crude, for the problem where updated gpx files were not always processed correctly. Slow is reliable so Garmin have gone for the simpel approach. Now if it was me I would have gone for the load fast but have a manual force reload........ I honestly hope you're wrong and this is just a simple bug, because as it is now, it sucks quite a lot! Back to 5.00 :-(
  22. They need to post a note to the cache page and then they can add a photo to that. Once it is uploaded they will then be able to use the URL in the description if they like. There is a great guide here: http://www.follow-the-arrow.co.uk/resources/htmlcodes.html
