    Gps Drift

So I've got about 30 finds under my belt, and set off looking for my first micro. I get to where I should be and nothing is in sight. Generally when I'm looking for a cache, I'll walk away and approach from several different directions to zero in on where I need to be. Same thing for this cache, and it kept leading me to the same spot, which was about 25 feet away from where I needed to be. Also worth noting - I was at the top of a high hill, had 18 ft. accuracy and plenty of satellites in view. Now I thought that for accuracy, it could be 18ft on any/all sides of you and that multiple approaches would help you figure out more exactly where the site was. Is it possible for a GPS unit to experience a constant "drift" in one direction or another??
  2. How does one convert between degree decimal and minute decimal? I know jeeep.com does it through a link, but I'd like to know mathmatically how it's done. I use Streets & Trips to plot things and I'd like to be able to just look at a cache page or my GPS and run the conversion in my head (assuming it's simple enough...) Thanks!!
  3. Similar problems here with Opera and Mozilla. For example, Opera looks like this: Where Mozilla looks like this: The problem is that you have your TD width tags for this information set as a specific amount of pixels. The problem with this is that different browsers use different fonts and such. I'd suggest changing your tables so that each TD element is a percentage of 100. That way is going to make it render better on all browsers. Once you start mixing size types - percent, pixels, browsers can get easily confused and each one is going to render the page differently. Hope that helps - otherwise, the upgrades look fantastic!!!
  4. My local Army surplus store (Sherpers in Hales Corner's, WI) sells them for $4.
  5. That site looks decent, but I think it's just pulling images from other people's servers - good way to find a cam, but I'd link directly to the site hosting it, not through a directory like that. I set up my first webcam cache this Saturday when I relized the Middle School right down the street from me had a weather station on the roof with a cam. You can find weatherstation cams at places like Instacam... Also - if you live in a metro area, check out the websites of your local TV stations - often the weather department has links to cams and things like that... Also, state DOT's often have freeway cams and stuff - I think it would be harder to find one where you could get in the shot without playing frogger
  6. Sherpers, the camping / outdoor / surplus store near Milwaukee, WI has the first stage of a multi in their front window.
  7. I've used PVC pipe with screw on ends for caches. They're designed to be water-tight, so they can be very hard to open. What I did to combat this was to sand down the treads of the cap and pipe. Then I add a dab of lithium grease (only a little, as not to get on the hands of a cacher) to make it more smooth. Then I glue one end shut, and put arrows on the outside instructing the finder to open this end. I also mark it with geocaching.com to make it look less bomb-like.
  8. I'm a newbie still picking up the jargon... At first glance, I briefly wondered how one could get Tuberculosis from a geocache...
  9. Quite normal - the screen on your GPS unit it a LCD - liquid crystal display. Like most liquids, they tend to move a bit slower in lower temperatures. I just got my first GPS on Sunday, so Monday night I took it out in -9F (-20F windchill). I was out walking for about 45 minutes and after about 35 minutes my batteries were near dead. When the unit warmed back up, I had plenty of juice in my batteries again... The moral of the story if to keep the unit in an inside pocket when navigating in cold weather. (And keep spare batteries warm ;-) )
