  1. Why do I care about people pumping their numbers? Have you seen the Adventure Labs in question here? You can get your "500 finds" in less than an hour and never leave your parked car. Is that what Adventure Labs are all about? Sitting in your car answering multiple choice questions? And why would anyone want to do this? What's their motive I wonder...... You don't like waymarks? If Waymarks appeared as finds in your stats page would you be running around visiting them? Just keep Adventure Labs separate from Geocaching, just like Waymarks, and all this drama goes away.
  2. What?? HQ has actually noticed that Ad.Labs have become the 'lame virtuals' that they once complained about?! Just remove the Adventure Lab from peoples 'find count' and the problem will go away. This abuse is only happening because people want to pump their numbers. After all I have found many Waymarks over the years, physically visiting a location, and they don't appear as 'finds', why should Adventure Labs inflate my find count?
  3. Another great April Fools Day prank! Great geo-art and lovely cache pages; I appreciate the effort put into the prank. I joined in the fun and logged a find on a traditional cache on Mars, I complained about how hard it was to get to Mars but it was an easy find at the GZ. Apparently "Mars" equals Louisiana, I got a souvenir for that state and my map tab indicates 1 find in LA. Now here it is, Sunday morning, and the joke log is gone, but the souvenir was still there and on my Stats page the Maps tab still shows a find in Louisiana! The souvenir was easy to kill, but I'm still trying to delete the map entry....*sigh* Looks like the joke was on me after all.....
  4. And now I've received a mysterious black bubble mailer, no return address, with the Cthulhu token in it.... They say if you worship Cthulhu he will eat you last. "ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn" Blue -
  5. A friend pointed out a new geocache container available on the web: My link With all the bomb scares caused by geocaches is this the world's worst idea for a cache container?
  6. This was my eighth cache find ever! I found it, on a second attempt, on September 7th, 2003 with my son, and several times since then with visitors. I'm sorry to say the cache is gone, but more importantly the cache hide is gone too! There seems to have been something of a landslip at the GZ and the little cave is either gone or totally buried. There was no sign of the cache at the GZ and no place to put a replacement cache either. Sorry, Bluelamb03
  7. Good news everyone! I've received a reply from Groundspeak! See you in Sudbury! Blue -
  8. Come to Dynamic Earth (home of the Big Nickel) and visit the Canadian GPS Adventure Maze starting March 3rd! http://sciencenorth.ca/dynamic-earth/exhibits/index.aspx?LangType=1033 But apparently we won't get to log a GPS Maze cache and earn the icon..... What's up? Is this an oversight, or a slight? The Canadian version isn't good enough? Blue -
  9. The geoMob (aka The Saturday Morning Caching Club) meets almost every Saturday for the express purpose of going on a group cache hunt. I'll be submitting a Saturday event in November to let everyone evaluate the usefulness of this policy proposal. Cheers, Blue -
  10. and you didn't even get it Oh, I get it alright. Some people think this is an extraordinary cache and that this is an extraordinary circumstance that requires an extraordinary exception. Correct? I think this is a pretty ordinary cache and a very common circumstance that requires no special consideration. Sorry to disagree, but that's what I see..... Blue -
  11. Well, there's 40 minutes of my life I'll never get back.... Come to Ottawa, IRONCACHER - 365 Days in a Row Challenge by missbug, http://coord.info/GC312YH, or go to the States:365 Day Calendar Challenge by Loch Cache, http://coord.info/GC22D90 or A Cache A Day ... <I>for 365 Days?</I> by King Boreas http://coord.info/GC1AG09, or the UK: 365 Day Challenge - The Year Completed. by One last look http://coord.info/GC2VQ8C, or A Year, Lost! - 365 days of caching! by Mario McTavish, http://coord.info/GC254H4 or publish one in every woodlot or on every island within 100 kms of your home co-ordinates. 'Challenges' are a dime a dozen these days, this one isn't in anyway special in my opinion. Bluelamb03
  12. MD5 = cf7cc59f22da679fafb7f7d6f11a2858 Translate that!
  13. I've logged from the GZ with my iPhone, and found it very difficult to wax poetic about the experience while typing with one finger in the cold. The result is a blank or a generic pasted 'found' log which I then edit at my leisure. You may not like 'blank' logs or "TFTC" logs but you cannot compel finders to write epic poems in order to claim a find on your cache! What next, will you delete their logs for spelling errors or grammatical mistakes? Blue -
  14. It's nice when an organization tries to promote themselves by offering geocaches tied to their property. But these Bruce Trail Passport caches aren't listed on Geocaching.com so this is the first I've heard of them! Imagine using geocaching to promote yourself, but ignoring the enormous amount of people who already geocache! You also have to wonder who hid these caches. Do they know anything at all about geocaching? A while back Cottage Life Magazine hid some 'caches' for a promotion and I tried to find one of them. The co-ordinates where off by several hundred meters and we never did find it... The Texas Park and Wildlife Department has published caches for their "Texas Geocache Challenge" http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/geocaching/ on geocaching.com. We all know about New York's Seaway Trail geoTrail of course, http://www.seawaytrail.com/geotrail.html, and Maryland has a similar challenge. The Georgia State Parks sponsors such a challenge too, http://www.gastateparks.org/Geocaching. All these caches are listed on GC.com, which means a built in audience of eager finders waiting to earn the 'challenge' geocoin. Without that these efforts are rather lame... Blue -
  15. I was reading the Texas Park and Wildlife Department webpage for their latest "Texas Geocache Challenge" (http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/geocaching/) and it occurred to me that I've read something similar for several U.S. States now! We probably all know about New York's Seaway Trail geoTrail of course, http://www.seawaytrail.com/geotrail.html, and Maryland has a similar challenge. But I remember reading about the Georgia State Parks sponsoring such a challenge too, http://www.gastateparks.org/Geocaching. I'm sure there are other State sponsored projects. I find it odd the completely different mindset that prevails just across the border. There people are using geocaching to encourage visits to Parks and historical sites, or regions as a whole. Often the only incentive is the award of a geocoin. Here in Ontario what do our Provincial Parks do for us? No seriously, what do they do for us? I know P.E.I. spent some money and effort to promote geocaching on the Island. And yes I know that some National Parks have gotten on board with geocaching for promoting their trails, but as a whole this country doesn't seem to know what people want or how to give it to them. I look forward to traveling to BC to find some of their caches. Blue -
  16. I understand your concern. Even with children in tow an older man skulking around a playground attracts some attention. I've even had to explain myself to a police officer once... When I hunt a cache that's been placed in a playground I go at night (when only the teenagers are hanging around drinking beer) or in bad weather and I make a point of explaining to the cache owner why this may not be a good idea. I my local area (Ottawa, Ontario) reviewers are sensitive to the schoolyard/playground locations and generally will not approve the cache, but as you've discovered that's not always the case. Blue -
  17. Well.....OK.... I went to take a look at an area yesterday, a preliminary map recce, and found the Geocaching Network KML was disabled. A little hunting and here I am.... Sorry to see it go, I used it all the time. Bluelamb03
  18. I couldn't agree more, lots of new cachers have given me enjoyable cache hunts and introduced me to new spots. That said I've also suffered at the hands of inexperienced cachers, "Circle of Life" by jsheils (GC1EPF6) and "The Chameleon" by muskie63 (GC1H2PH) are probably the latest examples. No matter. I have learned not to rush out after a newbie cachers hide. I now wait and let others beta-test the cache. Locally we still continue to advise newcomers to get some experience over several seasons before placing a cache, but you have to take each case on it's own merits. For every cache I've found in a cardboard box thirty meters from the posted co-ordinates there has been a great container in an excellent hide in a lovely spot. Go hide them! I want to find them....
  19. I can see your point, it's private property, but there are many caches abandoned by owners who no longer cache, do not respond to emails or log posts, and those caches just sit out in the woods getting moldy. Eventually the "needs maintenance" logs get attention and the cache goes through the disabled/archived process, but it's still left out there rotting in the bush. I've taken it upon myself to remove some of the offending caches, blatant geo-garbage, but other than the informal network we have developed locally there is no way to remove the garbage once the cache is archived. Does Navicache permit cache listings where the owner allows a cache to go untended for years without any attempt at maintaining it?
  20. I'd like to nominate Cape Cod Tidal Flats by Justin & the Girls. (GC1E67W). Nothing too strenuous or dramatic, but an impressive display of the Cape Cod Bay! Bluelamb03
  21. Hmmm.... I've found several caches in the Ottawa Gatineau area which have redirects or hides in the community mailboxes. I didn't think anything of it, the space between multiple boxes is perfect for magnetic micros or even small caches, but I can see where locals might be curious about our antics. Pity, Blue -
  22. I lurk but rarely post. I use Ottawa Geocaching Forum for my discussion needs. It's local and I know everyone.... Cheers,
  23. I wouldn't comment on any one's motives, since I don't know these people, but I do feel free to comment on their caches. With a few notable exceptions the caches I've found by these people are not good caches, they are not well located, they are not well hidden and they are not well maintained. Are there other cachers out there putting out 'bad' caches? Certainly, but there are a lot of 'bad' caches here, over a couple of years now! I won't bother with them anymore. Do the people coughing up $250 a year for a cache know this? Bluelamb03
  24. Thanks Blackdog! I keep finding benchmarks and other markers, though I'm not usually 'hunting' them specifically. It's sad that they're now being abandoned and slowly disappering. "Long Long Way to the Oasis" by abacab (GCQJFB), which is now archived, used 'benchmarks' as redirects to the cache location. The perilous state of some of those indicates how quickly new technology is taking over. I'll have to pay more attention to Waymarking. Cheers,
