Aus Spielersicht gefragt: Was würde denn einen richtig guten Virtual auszeichnen?

Ich denke nicht, dass das ein reales Problem ist. Aber ich verstehe natürlich, dass manche Forumsdiskussion ohne seitenlange Ausführungen über exotische Spezialfälle sowie Guideline-Exegese schnell im Sand verlaufen würde. Ich wollte hier aber nur einen praktischen Tipp geben, um das Problem des Fragestellers zu lösen.

Mit den bordeigenen Mitteln von geocaching.com nicht. Allerdings müssen laut Guidelines Challenge-Caches das Wort "Challenge" im Namen haben. Das ist von wenigen Ausnahmen abgesehen auch der Fall. Mit Tools wie GSAK oder ähnlichem könntest du also nach dem Schlüsselwort "Challenge" im Cachenamen filtern.

That's the problem: Many geocachers think that DNF implies something beyond not finding the cache. And everyone has slightly different opinions, on what is implied. Some typical but wrong implications: * DNF = the cacher was to dumb to find it * DNF = the geocache is missing * DNF = the geocacher has searched at least 5 minutes for the cache * DNF = the geocache needs maintenance * DNF = the geocache should be archived I agree with you though, that when I don't even start the geocaching tour, I don't post a DNF. Not even a note then. Example: I decide in the morning to go for a nice cache on a mountain in the afternoon. After a very good lunch I skip that plan and head for a nap instead.

As a player I do this. And why not? I have a story to tell, that's what logs are for. The logtype merely reflects if I found the cache (and signed the logbook) or not.

Als Spieler bin ich mir ziemlich sicher, dass Angelcaches ganz wunderbar ohne die Erwähnung eines schwedischen Angelverkäufers funktionieren. Eine Ungleichbehandlung bezüglich anderer Markennamen kann ich auch nicht erkennen - die genannten Beispiele fallen eher in den Bereich der Marken die zu Gattungsnamen wurden: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gattungsname#Markenname Und die letzten beiden Beispiele (Sicherungsgerät, Kajak) erscheinen mir lediglich vom Verfasser konstruiert um hier Stimmung zu machen. Was mich schon eher irritiert, sind die ganzen Angelcaches, bei denen im Listing nur vage angedeutet wird, man bräuchte ein Tool um den Cache zu finden. Anstatt klipp und klar zu sagen, dass man eine Angel, Teleskoprute oder ähnliches benötigt. Dafür sind Cachelistings doch da: schreiben, was man braucht um den Cache zu finden.

Writing as a player here: This is pure speculation on your side. As Groundspeak HQ already explained things, it's also quite disrespectful. Moving caches had special technical semantics: coordinate updates, souvenir handling etc. There's no special semantics for webcam and virtual caches, only different syntax for the "found it" log type on webcams which is called "webcam photo taken". That is pretty easy to support long term from the IT side of things. The only real danger for the remaining virtuals and webcams is abuse by us geocachers, like couch potato logging, and absent/ignorant owners. Back to moving caches: They are not gone. You can still list new ones. Just not as a geocache listing (which doesn't work very well for this kind of cache). But as a travelbug (which works just fine, especially as the coordinate updates are done automaticall through the finders logs). The experience of finding such a cache out there remains the same. So please stop whining and create a great new moving (travelbug-)cache instead.

Meine Spielermeinung: Unsinn. Man kann weiterhin Moving Caches in die Welt schicken und bei geocaching.com listen. Nur eben nicht als Geocache (weil das Format dafür nicht vernünftig funktioniert) sondern als Travelbug (was wunderbar geht, insbesondere werden die Koordinaten durch die Sucher selber aktualisiert). Letztlich geht es doch um die Erlebnisse da draussen. Und ob die nun als Geocache oder Travelbug gelistet sind, ist ziemlich egal. Ich habe manchmal den Eindruck, dass so mancher Geocacher Geocaches (das sind die Dosen draussen) mit dem Listing verwechseln. Das Listing ist einfach nur ein Weg, Koordinaten und weitere Infos die zum Finden nötig sind, zu veröffentlichen. Die Aktion in Essen empfinde ich eher als eine Übung im Statistikpunktesammeln auf einer Listingplatform als ein interessantes Geocacheing-Erlebnis.

Beispiel: https://coord.info/TB2HR9Z Die heute archivierten Wandercaches können in diese Form überführt werden - sogar mit speziellem Trackingcode und Icon - so die Owner das wünschen.

Eine ganz große Bitte von Reviewerseite: Für eine Vorabprüfung auf Abstandskonflikte bitte das Listing nicht zum Review geben. Sondern nur das Listing mit allen relevanten Koordinaten anlegen und dann per Mail einen Reviewer anschreiben und um eine Abstandsprüfung bitten. Und nicht vergessen den GC-Code bzw. den Link zum Listing mit in die Mail zu packen!

Du musst den Prozess über folgende Seite anstupsen: http://www.geocaching.com/adopt/ Meine Meinung als Spieler: Bedenke, dass die Listings dann aus deinem Profil verschwinden. Du hast dann auch keine Kontrolle mehr, was mit den Caches und Listings passiert. Oft genug fehlt es dann an Wartung und die Dinger gehen bald in's Archiv - es steckt bei den Übernehmenden Leuten einfach nicht so viel Herzblut drin, wie bei einem selbst gestalteten Cache. Ich empfehle daher ein würdiges Ende: ein nettes Archiv-Log schreiben und die Dosen einsammeln.

Let me introduce you to letterbox style logging. It's quite clever and actually superior to geocache style logging, as it removes most causes of possible logging disputes. Material needed: two individual stamps, two logbooks. Every letterbox has a logbook and an individual stamp inside. Every letterboxer has a personal logbook and an individual stamp. When she finds the letterbox, she puts her stamp into the box's logbook. And the box's stamp into her personal logbook. This way she can alsways prove that she's actually found a particular letterbox, as she has that individual box's stamp in her personal logbook. This even works when the original letterbox goes missing. Also everyone visiting the letterbox can see, that she was there as it has her individual stamp inside the box's logbook. As there is already the requirement of a logbook inside a geocache, the only thing missing for letterbox style logging is an individual stamp. Put such a stamp in a geocache and you have a letterbox hybrid. While individual stamp is the technical term, in reality these can be small pieces of art, adding a lot to the appeal of letterboxes and letterbox hybrids. (Not relevant to this discussion but for the record: Like any other geocache there's the requirement of exact coordinates, so you can use GPS to find it. That's why it's a letterbox hybrid, not a plain letterbox. Of course you could additionally provide letterbox style clues in the geocache listing. Or use waypoint projections from well defined locations (like a statue, historical marker etc.), which works both with GPS and compass/pace counting.)

Den GC-Code bekommst du, wenn du dein Listing anlegst. Das Listing kannst du ruhig schon anlegen bevor du die Dose auslegst und die genauen Koordinaten kennst. Wenn dann alles fertig ist, schickst du das Listing zum Review.

Das Gegenteil wäre inoffizieller Müll. Von dem möchte ich mich mit meinen Dosen schon abgrenzen. Durchaus mit einem Stück Ironie. Zur Erinnerung: Ursprünglich war dieses Spiel als "Stash Hunt" bekannt, also die Suche nach "Stashs", einem Versteck für Verbrecher. "Offizieller Geocache" ist leicht ironisch ganz am anderen Ende des legalen Spektrums angesiedelt.

Also auf meinen Geocaches steht außen "Offizieller Geocache" drauf. Also gibt es sie. q.e.d.

These are off-topic, as we are talking about caches with an unusal number of DNFs. As others already pointed out, there are factors like difficulty which play a role in determining the likelihood that a cache is abandoned. The help center article doesn't tell you to switch off your brains.

Again, we are talking about a string of DNFs. These usually develop over the course of many weeks or months. So there's nothing "quick" involved here.

I agree. But we are talking here about a string of DNFs or as the Help Center article calls it: an unusual number of DNFs. And that most of the time means /a/ there's an issue with the cache and /b/ the owner shirks maintenance on the cache. Yes, sometimes maintenance just means getting out there and see if the cache is still there and in good shape. No, usually not after a single DNF (depends a lot of what the DNF log says). I can see why some prefer the Needs Maintenance or a private mail, as it might be perceived as more polite. But it's pretty useless on a non-responsive owner.

Writing this as a player. Owners already got mail about their cache. One for every DNF log. So why bother contacting/alerting an already unresponsive owner? I'd rather log a Needs Archive if there's already a string of DNF logs. The owner get's a mail about this as well and can temporarily disable the listing and do a cache maintenance then. If the owner does nothing, a reviewer will disable and wait a while for the maintenance to be done before really archiving the listing.

Auf geocaching.com ist dort weit und breit nichts. Und war auch nie etwas. Entweder ein Privatcache, der nirgends gelistet ist oder der Cache wurde auf einer anderen Platform gelistet. Wieder ein gutes Beispiel, warum auf/in jedem Geocache Kontaktdaten des Besitzers sein sollten.

In my experience, for the Canary Islands you can use OpenStreetMap based maps generated for Garmin devices, for example the Open MTB maps. The coverage is very good, even small trails are on it. Gibraltar, Spain and Italy are of similar quality, though there will be larger "info gaps" in rural areas seldom visited by tourists. Enjoy your trip!
