  2. Reconsidered South Run. Figured there are two ways to get to the cache, a longer 1.5 mile hike, or a shorter .4 mile (using trails). So I will leave it up to the cachee to decide which one to use. Planted the cache today, awaiting the approval...
  3. Checked out South Run today. The only problem is the trail circles the park, so what took me 1.5 miles to walk, could be done in .2 miles through the woods. Looking at the other options this weekend. Thanks for the suggestions!
  4. Ok, I am taking the plunge, and have my first cache already to place, but I am having a problem deciding where to put it. Being fairly new to the parks around Fairfax, I don't want to rush into it, and have actually spent a week researching parks and other sites that could help. There is 1 thing I am using as a criteria - 1)I do not want to place in a park that has no real parking areas - I personally hate parking in residential areas to look for a cache. Burke Lake would be great, but it already has 10. Any suggestions on a good park that fits the 1 requirement? Like maybe a park where you've always wondered why there is no cache there?
  5. BeachBuddies, This page is the type that I just cannot read in my Pocket PC: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=35293 The background image ends up bleeding completely through the main text making the page virtually unreadable - and not just the sides, the whole page is washed out by the image. I use GpxView on my Ipaq to view the pages offline. Since all background images bleed through, I would say some are probably ok, depending on what image they used, and how often it is repeated in the background. Just downloaded Michael Gordon Elementary (BB03)to my Pocket PC, and it is the same way - text washed out by the background bleeding through. 6. Ditto on the music. It is annoying. Also, if there is a background image, it plays havoc if I download the pages into my PocketPc and open them in GPXView. Some are unreadable.
  7. I would stay at a hotel that has a nearby Metro station, and somewhere close to the inner city. Not sure of the price range you are looking for, but The Marriott at the Metro Center is a great place to stay. It is just a few blocks from almost everything. I would avoid Georgetown at all costs. It is college party-city, and a nightmare to get around. You may want to take a peek at this link, as it lists the hotels around the Metro stops: http://www.1stwashingtondchotels.com/pages/maps.htm
  8. I was going to say I saw a book on Geocaching on Amazon already, but looking further, it is from Erik Sherman, who started this thread. It is called 'GeoCaching: Hiding, Hiking and High-Tech". It is available for preorders.
  9. Thanks all for the good info. Since I know nothing about bikes, I really didn't know what to ask. But with the info you all have supplied, I will at least have a base to go on. thanks again
  10. Since one of the benefits of Geocaching is the exercise, I find it counter-productive to drive to all the cache sites in my area that are too far to walk. Knowing nothing about bikes, I am looking for a bike that will ride mostly on paved bike trails, but does have the ability to go offroad if necessary. And doesn't go over the $1000 mark. Anyone suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
  11. Also check out PanaVue Image Assembler . It is pretty cool.
  12. quote:Originally posted by luna girl:that I was actually supossed to going in the direction that the arrow was pointing I spent 10 minutes closing in on a cache before I realized I was following the sun icon, and not my cache icon. Couldn't figure out why it kept saying I was getting further away when I was pointing right at it!
  13. Cruzin!, that is my main reason too. I listen to my own audio, and it gets meshed with midi. theboonieman, thanks for the info, but under helper apps, I don't have the audio/x-midi, in fact, the only things listed are for .exe, .zip and .doc. BrownMule, I agree to each their own. To me it is the audio versions of pop-ups. Annoying and distracting. To others, it is music to their ears, so to speak. My request would not to be take it off, since that would affect those that like it, but to put an option on the page that allows someone to turn it off, if they so desired.
  14. Escape didn't work for me. It still keeps on playing. I am using Mozilla, as an FYI. Here is one of the offending lines in the HTML: quote:<embed src="http://img.Groundspeak.com/user/11902_1600.mid" autostart=true loop=false volume=100>
  15. Some pages force you to listen to crappy music Hawks Beach while reading the page. Is there anyway to "opt out" so to speak, to avoid having this music forced upon us? don
  16. I haven't found that many caches, but I prefer going alone, or at the most with just one other person. Can't see the fun of the 'team' concept where people head out in groups greater than 2. If someone else finds the cache that is in your group, how could that be fun for you? (and when I say 'you', I mean no one in particular, just using it as a global reference.)
  17. I've read that there are caches that are dog-friendly, which contain treats or toys for dogs that go with us on our searches. Are there such things, and if so, is there anyway to search the database for these? Thanks
