  1. Regarding this site: http://garmin.na1400.info/routable.php A friend is trying to get some maps for his garmin, since he only had IE (which the site claims it doesn't support) I entered the request for him. However, the site has over 900 requests in the queue and they 'claim' they send a notification e-mail immediately, yet it has been hours and I have yet to receive the e-mail. Is the site experiencing problems? Has anyone successfully downloaded a map from them recently? Is there another alternative for those who don't purchase City Navigator? Thanks!
  2. You want to use a Pocket Query. When you get the file on your computer, just double-click and it will extract GPX files. Attach your GPS to the computer and copy the 2 GPX files to the \Garmin\GPX folder of your GPS. I think there is a Wiki for the 62 series, but I can't find it; however, this Wiki on the Colorado covers the basics you should know about geocaching with your new GPS: http://garmincolorado.wikispaces.com/Geocaching
  3. There is no real substitute for GSAK on the Mac platform. If you really like GSAK your best bet is to run one of the Windows emulators, or use software like VMware or Parallels to run Windows on the Mac (that's what I do, VMware Fusion under Windows XP on my Mac mini). Good luck!
  4. How about instead of adding TODO to the end of the name, put it at the beginning...that should do the trick.
  5. I've loaded over 100 finds in a single geocache_visits.txt file at least twice...perhaps three times...never noticed a problem myself (other than 2 logs in the same minute, which was in an upload of fewer than 100 finds...has happened two or three times). So I don't think there is a specific issue with ALL files container 100 field notes...there's got to be more to it. Perhaps a character in one of your logs...or a blank line. Do you regularly remove the file and let your GPS create a new file...or are you just picking up where you left off the last time you went caching?
  6. If you check that software update, Garmin clearly states that the Colorado can only locate/read a CHIRP...it cannot program a CHIRP. Perhaps in the future they may add that ability...but they have not announced it. In fact, I think they've made comment leading me to believe there is a limitation with the Colorado which may prevent it from ever programming a CHIRP. Bad news for us Colorado owners...but at least we can find them without buying a new GPS!
  7. I've noticed finds get dropped if two were logged in the same minute. Could that be the issue?
  8. Even better...how about this one I recently posted: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LUID=cec88fd2-58d8-44b8-b16f-7c5323b7837e I later visited GZ and earned that DNF! For the full story on ISAG see CondoMax's profile: http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?guid=b1585d60-b7ab-4af5-a765-eee673101fb1&wid=43738511-3214-48f5-953c-400353d57a20&ds=2
  9. Here's one of the best resources for information: http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/ Read the geocaching section. No special software needed to transfer a PQ to the GPS...just unzip the PQ, plug in your GPS, then copy the GPX file(s) to the \Garmin\GPX folder on the GPS.
  10. One of the currently available Garmin handheld units (Dakota, Oregon, 62, etc) would all be Mac compatible. I'm using the prior model (Colorado) with my Mac without any issues...and all the other units I mentioned are based on the same technology.
  11. Missing these too...but, I'm guessing since there are only 5 of each I'm out of luck. I do have an extra Seaweed and Sunshine (both unactivated) to trade if anyone has any of these or the Peach Glow.
  12. Ugh! I thought I had them all...looks like I'm missing this one.
  13. What resolution are the photos? If you're attempting to upload full-resolution photos from your camera they are probably too large and need to be re-sized. I would suggest 600x400, 640x480 or 800x600 to be appropriate sizes.
  14. I disagree with this and do the exact opposite. I ONLY load gpx files to the card. Occasionally (with all paperless garmins) you can have a situation where the gps shows no geocaches loaded, this requires a removal of the offending gpx files and a clean reboot with none loaded to clear the internal database. At least this way if you are caught in the field with this situation, you have a good chance of fixing it without the need for a computer. Remove card, reboot. Turn off, insert card, reboot. Fixed. If you have a corrupt gpx file that is causing a startup hang, you also have the ability to fix this much easier than if it is the core memory as well. Ditto...although I'm on a Colorado 400t. I've been loading geocaches on the SD card for almost 2 years now, after having my GPS go brain dead (as I like to call it) a couple of times. Since I've made the switch to loading GPX files on the SD card, I've only had it happen once or twice...but I was able to remedy the problem in a matter of minutes in the field, instead of needing a computer. It might take a little longer to boot...but how many times a day do you turn your GPS on/off? I turn mine on in the morning and either leave it running all day, or only turn it off once...during lunch. That extra minute is worth it to me for the ability to fix a brain dead GPS in the field. YMMV
  15. I've had a Colorado 400t since Feb 2008 and have always used hi-capactiy NiMH batteries in it...almost always get a full day of caching out of a single charge. Only use auto power on long drives (e.g. an hour to the first cache I'll use auto power to get there, then I'm on batteries the rest of the day). Get something with more than 2000mAh (e.g. the batteries I've used have been rated 2600-2700mAh)...and a good charger (i.e. a smart charger which can condition batteries and won't over-charge them...don't use a cheap wall-wart that comes with cheaper batteries). I got almost 2 years out of the first set of 4 batteries...I'm now on my second set and they're still going strong. YMMV
  16. I've been using GSAK as long as I've been geocaching and I switched to a Mac last year...and continue to run GSAK using VMware (you could also use Parallels or dual-boot with Boot Camp). IMO, there is no substitute for GSAK.
  17. Excellent resource for the Garmin Oregon: http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com For the answer to your question, read GC2 on this page: http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/Geocaching
  18. One of the best resources on the web for the Garmin Colorado/Oregon: Colorado: http://garmincolorado.wikispaces.com/ Oregon: http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/
  19. Currently running Beta Software 3.52 GPS Software Version 2.90 Well, you are running beta software...you could try rolling back to the last non-beta. Personally, I'm still on 3.0 (and GPS 2.90) on my Colorado 400t because I haven't found a benefit to upgrading (since I don't use the birds eye satellite imagery)...and the early beta versions after 3.0 all degraded my map refreshes when changing the zoom level. I find my current setup to be very stable. YMMV
  20. I can understand the complex nature of a geocoin like this. The SCGA (Space Coast Geocachers Association) had a 3D Space Shuttle coin produced last Spring. The bay opens to reveal the tracking number inside. So, what would I consider reasonable for a coin like yours...under $18. I love the SCGA coin!! Its so cool looking. Are they still selling them anywhere? If they're not still available from Coins and Pins, I'm pretty sure they're still available from the Space Coast Geocachers Association on-line store at http://shop.spacecoastgeocachers.com/
  21. The GPS in your iPhone shouldn't stop working when you're out of cell range. Which iPhone do you have? 3G, 3Gs, 4? They should all work without cell reception. Now, if you have an older iPhone...I do believe the GPS is only an assisted GPS and requires a cell signal. But the 3G/3Gs/4 have a full GPS...just give it a minute to kick in. I use Geocaching with Geosphere on my iPhone 3G when I'm in the middle of the Ocala National Forest (no AT&T signal out there).
  22. I would vote for Geocaching with Geosphere...but not Groundspeak's Geocaching app.
  23. Sorry, you can't change it on the handhelds. Bummer. Maybe Garmin will change that in a future FW update. It would be nice to be able to customize the position icon. Or minimally make a "large" or "small" choice available in setup. Thanks for the quick reply! You can wish all you want...but it's been that way on the Colorado, Oregon, Dakota and now the new 62/78 models...I seriously doubt they're going to change it, so I wouldn't recommend holding your breath.
  24. Yeah, the 100k topo isn't terribly helpful (it's better than nothing or the basemap) considering there is FREE 24k topo from GPSFileDepot. Assuming the only thing the 62st adds is the topo, the money is probably better spent on City Navigator.
