Seatrout This has come up before, but here are my thoughts. First I have faith that the vast majority of the other people who share this world with me are decent people like myself. Secondly, the likelihood that one of the very few who are not decent would find my cache and then decide to document some illegal activity with the cache camera is extremely remote. Lastly, the worst “joke” photos I could imagine being taken (which may be humorous, nasty or intriguing depending on the eye of the beholder ) would not be illegal. The worst that would result from such photos would be the developer refusing to print the photos. Or perhaps the worst would be that they would print them. Again the eye of the beholder. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  2. We’ve posted the pictures from all four cache camera’s we’ve used. Here’s how we did it. We created web pages using space provided by our ISP with the pictures. We kept it simple since our html skills are simple. I numbered each picture then used geocaching.com to email the link to everyone who logged the cache during the period that the camera was in cache. I let them know the pictures were online and that if they would like to have theirs labeled then to email me the picture number with their title. I also put links to the web pages on the cache page and posted a note to the cache to notify any watchers. It takes a little bit of work, but it was worth the effort. I would recommend spending the extra dollar or so to get the developer to put the pictures on a disk or online. The first two cameras I just scanned the pictures myself. That was a pain. Here’s how it turned out: Beachcombing At Joe's Goose Rock http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  3. We recently started leaving a Video CD we have made in caches. The CD has three slideshows of pictures we have taken while geocaching (about 150 total), many of which are from our log entries. The cool thing about the CD is that it will play in most home DVD players. I figure that each costs less than 25 cents, but is very personal. Unfortunately, we haven’t been getting out caching enough the past month or so to get them into circulation. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  4. quote:Originally posted by Team Finn:The pocket query to Mobipocket thing is ok, but I find it a little awkward (probably oe). Can someone out there tell me a better way to download cache pages to my PDA? When we go out caching (which hasn’t been often enough lately), we will only be looking for a few caches, and we know which caches those will be. In this case I have found using geoclipping to grab just the specific caches we want to be much easier than using the pocket query. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  5. quote:Originally posted by Rubbertoe:You... don't... have... to... use... paper! *slapping forehead* ... I think I've beaten this dead topic enough already. I agree with you toe. The creative ideas that this could spawn would be fun to see. I have encountered more than a few traditional travel bugs which were having a hard time keeping their tags attached. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  6. Trippy check out www.shrinkydinks.com I didn’t even think of the geocaching application aspect, but we just gave our 9-year-old daughter a bunch of shrinky dink stuff for her birthday. Now to I have to figure out how to tell her that dad needs to borrow some of her shrinky dink stuff for his own project. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  7. The first finder of my Battery 248 micro cache found only the plundered remains. I guess destroyed is more correct term for a micro that only contained a logbook and pencil. It was just plain poor placement on my part. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  8. My bad...I read Kodak not Kodiak. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  9. Cool! 2 degrees from the west coast! On September 20, 2002 I found Excelsior Peak Stash, which was found by mikechim on October 5, 2001, who found Floatch’s Lame-O CD Cache on September 20, 2001, which was found by Markwell on July 1, 2001. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  10. It has been five months since the idea started to take shape, but it has finally come together. I decided to use Warm Fuzzies idea of creating a Video CD that can be played in a home DVD player. I wasn’t able to use the mini cdr’s due to their small capacity, but the finished product is quite nice I think. Now I just need to find some time to get out there and find some caches to leave them in. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  11. Ditto about GeoClipping. I still prefer it to the pocket queries. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  12. Logon to geocaching.com and go to “My Cache Page.” In the upper right hand corner click on the link “Change your account information.” Remember to enter you password at the top of the page then scroll down to the “Your Profile” section. Find the photo heading and click on “do so now.” Follow the instructions to select a picture to upload. Go back to “My Cache Page” and go to “Change your account information” again. Now when you go down to “Your Avatar Image” and select your picture from the dropdown menu to the right. You now will have an Avatar image! http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  13. quote:Originally posted by Jeremy Irish:My wife picked up a pair of http://www.customatix.com/ sneaks a while back. They're pretty cool. I've been considering the "Think Tank" boots but I'm a bit wary about purchasing and designing a pair at $100 site unseen. I may try one out one of these days. Great now my wife wants the Mariners shoes. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  14. I wouldn’t say that geocaching.com has become too commercial, but I would agree that it feels different. Bigger, less personal, I don’t know exactly how to put it in words. I feel it extends beyond the site to the activity of geocaching itself. Good. Bad. I’m not making a judgement, just an observation. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  15. quote: curiously, how many caches do I have to log before I am "accepted" into this community? The issue isn’t that you haven’t found any caches. The things that makes your post questionable is that you haven’t found any caches and your first post to the forums could be perceived as commercial advertising. If you are just a shell for marketing this contest you already know all this. If you are just new to our activity it is just an honest mistake. I think Jeremy gave you the benefit of the doubt. Welcome aboard. As for the contest, it sounds fun, but I don’t think my 1986 Chevy Caviler could handle the trip. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/

  20. quote:Originally posted by Gwho:…..it'll take a fair amopunt of votes to get something into the top 5% The problem I see with this system is that it could prevent more remote or difficult caches from making the list. For example, lets suppose that a really good cache is found 50 times and 10 people put it on their top 10 list. Then you have a great cache that has only been found 5 times but all 5 finders add it to their list. By only recognizing the top vote getters the results would end up skewed towards the most frequently found caches and likely clustered around population centers. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  21. One more while I’m complaining about work…. A couple of weeks ago I had to sit though safety training where I was told “ There may or may not be substances in the work place that may or may not cause reproductive harm.” After patiently listening to this I asked the trainer, “Are there any of these substances in our work place?” The answer, “Maybe.” http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/

  23. Can you elaborate on what abuse you think would happen, and why such abuse would mitigate the usefulness (and fun) of recognizing some of the truly outstanding caches out there? You pointed out that abuse already occurs in the logs and with the “archive this cache” features. Would you suggest that those abuses justify doing away with logs all together? http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  24. Being told at work that I need to have Halloween safety training. No joking. This really happened today. I can’t help but think if I can’t keep myself safe through Halloween, maybe my employer would be better off with out me. BTW I work for the government. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
