  1. Perhaps I got a deffective unit because that's not at all what I see. It does make an outstanding paperweight though.
  2. Im still trying to figure out where to release this TB.
  3. Im a Garmin man to the bone. I use a 60CS I own a Magellan Explorist 500 only because I won it. I never would have spent money on one.
  4. You can download a free version of Google Earth here.
  5. I personally like having a standard battery for all my caching gizmos. My GPS, flashlight, digital camera and headlamp all use AA's. I find it real convenient to have 1 type of battery that fits everything. On several occasions, I have taken batteries out of one gadget to use in another when I forgot to pack along spares.
  6. There have been tons of threads created by people to talk about certain cache types they don't like. Some people dislike micros, others can't stand puzzles, some don't like urban caches, others don't like virtuals. No matter what you do, there will always be those who don't like it. That's just the way of the world. This doesn't mean we shut them down. Why ruin the fun of many to satisfy a few nay-sayers. Bottom line is if you don't like them, don't seek them.
  7. Ok, maybe you can find 1 or 2 other pieces of electronics that use the same battery. Bottom line is, the explorist does not support standard batteries and unless you've got a spare battery pack in your pocket fully charged, if the battery dies on you, you are done for the day. It is commonly known that Magellan GPSr's update significantly slower than Garmin causing the infamous boomerang effect. I never stated that the explorist was inaccurate, I simply stated that it updates alot slower than the 60CS. You can be standing at the cache and the explorist will show 200' away and will slowly catch up over the next minute or 2. Ok, maybe the quad helix antenna isn't the reason but I have certainly seen better reception with my 60CS. I often go caching with my kids and I let them use the E500. Their GPS was constantly losing SAT lock while my 60CS never had fewer than 4. It seems like I've spent more time waiting for that thing to load files than actually getting to use it. With my 60CS, 3 button pushes and I'm ready to go. Perhaps the unit I've got is deffective, I don't know. All I do know is that I get far superior perfomance out of my 60CS than the E500
  8. Some people will swear by them, but I was lucky enough to win an Explorist 500 in a contest so I did a side by side comparison with my Garmin 60CS and, in my opinion, the 60CS is a FAR superior unit. Heres a short list of reasons why I like the 60CS vs the Explorist The explorist uses a proprietary rechargeable battery. So when its dead, you have no choice but to go home and charge it. You can't just throw in a spare set of AAs and continue on your way. It's slow to update your position. You could be stansing at the cache and the Explorist will show that your still 200' away. The 60CS updates just about instantly. I get better satellite reception under tree cover with the 60CS due to its quad helix antenna. Navigating between the different file menus on the Explorist is slow and tedious.
  9. My best advice about the Magellan Explorist series is not to buy one.
  10. I have requested a feature that will list a TB's tracking number on the TB page that is only visible to the bug owner.
  11. I do plan on making another attempt at Owl's head in the near future. Even though the cache is gone, I'll at least be able to say I was there.
  12. I did a cache once that was listed as a 4.5 / 4.5 The cache description warns of how difficult an perilous it will be and reading the logs of the previous finders supports this asessment. One day, I prepare for this ordeal I am about to undertake by loading my pack with a change of clothes, flashlight, first aid kit, spare batteries, food, water and whatever other item I think may be useful. I arrive at stage 1 which is located under a bench, along a paved path in a park. When I open it, I find a note that says: "This is a liar's cache. To log the find, please make up a story in your online log that describes how difficult and dangerous this cache was for you" I made me laugh. I won't link the cache or post it's name so as not to spoli it for anyone else.
  13. I think its back now.
  14. There isn't much at my work for cache containers, but I do catch myself checking out the stationery cabinet for pens and notebooks. I'm also guilty of occasionally snagging small company promotional items for use as trade swag.
  15. I too have seen many local events where TB's check in and never check out. I think there are so many TB's changing hands that they get lost in the shuffle.

    Quest Question

I use a Garmin 60CS and if yours works like mine, mark your current location then scroll down to the coordinate field and edit the coordinates to whatever you like.
  17. What you want is a Letterbox Hybrid. This one appears to be closest one to you.
  18. Letterboxing doesn't support online logging like geocaching does.
  19. Its a letterbox which is listed on letterboxing.org. Badge of Friendship Letterbox.

    What Is...

The best thing about caching is that theres something for everyone. Whether your thing is long hikes, puzzles and mindgames, short walks, historical places, or whatever, theres a cache for you.
  21. I have one and the only real drawback I can see is a reduction in my car's fuel economy. The inverter loads down the alternator and the engine has to work harder to turn it thus using more gas.
