  1. It is amazing. Congratulations on reaching 1000!
  2. For one virtual, I had finders log their visit by autographing a baseball. It went with the theme of the cache and was one of a half dozen baseballs at the site. The log, err baseball, has been reported missing however so it's back to using the usual verification question

  4. Or you could rent a boat. There are marinas in the South Bronx and City Island. You could split the rental for a 20-ft aluminum with a couple of other 'cachers. In a prior life, I worked for a civil engineer on projects for the Army Corps of Engineers. We worked off the waters of Hunt's Point and Riker's surveying the channels - the distance is not great but the currents are tricky.
  5. As a life-wasting sluggard, I'll be happy to just get jonboy's four new Westchester caches. I'm still trying to get my courage up for Hi-Tor. As for jonboy's Putnam caches, I'm waiting for delivery of my new ATV so I can match BP's find times. 2 to go to the century mark, ttepee!

  7. I've had no complaints yet on my Trap Gun Cache. Then again, no one has logged it yet either...
  8. Probably because I pulled the old "banana in the tailpipe" trick when I spotted his car at this cache. Let it be a warning to all you Jersey geocachers who keep crossing the river to Westchester to poach on our first finds!

  10. SF: You can pick up two more caches real quick by breaking into the trunk of the Artful Dodger's car.
  11. The Horsemen are too modest. I'll plug their newest (and IMHO their best to date) cache for them: Evie's Surprise. Great location.
  12. I Georged before I geocached and actually only found out about geocaching through WG. Since I started over a year ago I've put a George in nearly every physical cache I've found - they make for cheap travel bugs. This is my favorite cached George. I've kept track of my Geocached Georges here. The most hits I've got on a geocached George is 4. In contrast, I've got 3 bills in natural circulation that have been hit 6 times. In my experience, most bills get a hit or two in caches and then are not heard of again. That said, the controversy at WG is that geocached bills were creeping into the Top Ten Bills List (one had I believe 12 hits) which upset the purists (who, as Stayfloopy noted, do not seem to mind bill-swapping between Georgers particularly the collectors). Hank, the Webmaster at WG responded by "tagging" bills that indicate in their user notes that they were cached at one time. Quite a task considering the number of Geo-Georgers so Hank only tags bills that accumulate a large number of hits. Though tagged, the bills are in the WG database. Hank even set up a seperate Top Ten Geocached Bills ranking. At the rate I'm picking up Georges left by Stayfloopy and BassoonPilot, I'll be able to retire soon. HJS: It's still OK to cache Georged bills so don't be dissuaded by what goes on in the WG Forums

  14. WTG Jonboy!! I'm getting dizzy just watching you find and place caches. That was a very fast 100 and not a virtual or locationless among them. Well done and congratulations!
  15. I suggest you try to contact Team ECO Cache. That team hails from Riverdale and has planted a couple of caches in the Bronx. If you search the forums by their name, you can find one of their logs and, by clicking on their name, view their profile and find a link to anon email them.
  16. After reviewing this thread, I recognized the name and checked his log on this locationless cache. It's not the same shot as the others he used (compare the location of the fingers) but its pretty close. I blew up the picture and the coords on the GPS match up with the coords on the cache page. This one may be real. Clean fingernails at least. [This message was edited by Perfect Tommy on August 27, 2002 at 03:36 PM.]
  17. quote:In my area, there is one cache that is planted at the base of Kensico Dam. I am surprised that no one has had the commmon sense to remove this cache. This is the kind of irresponsible placing of caches that really threatens our sport. In defense of the cache placer, that particular cache was placed before 9/11. That said, I agree that some caches, such as the one at Kensico Dam and others placed near sensitive areas (particularly the ones on or near bridges) should be moved or archived by the cache owner. Third parties stumbling upon these caches may not know, or care to know, how innocuous this RASH actually is and instead imagine something sinister resulting in bad publicity and a general crackdown by the authorities. If you think the cache at Kensico Dam should be removed then email the cache owner and ask him to retrieve it and archive it, or you can ask him if it were alright for you to remove it. This cache may need to be "adopted" first and then archived.
  18. I'm hearing you Brian, but all I'm seeing is pink. Maybe it's time for a new diversion. May I suggest professional wrestling.
  19. Perfect Tommy is one of the Hong Kong Cavaliers in The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension. One of my favorite cult films from the '80s.
  20. Wondered what all the fuss was about this geocaching thing on the off-topic forum at Where's George? Already had an Garmin 12 so I wandered into the woods. Sure beats technosphere!
  21. We can search for the nearest caches to us by putting in our zipcode, so isn't is possible for there to be a similar search just for bugs? Such a search may make it easier for a 'cacher to see what bugs are in his/her area that may need a lift. Just a suggestion.
  22. Just wanted to chime in to the chorus of well-wishers. That was a fast 500! As others have noted, one can usually tell the quality of a cache by your posts and 'floopy's (since they're usually the first two logs anyway ). No time to rest on your laurels though, on to 1000!
  23. As a threshold matter, I voted against this cache and agree with many of the comments made by the previous posters. That said, last February I went to Ground Zero as part of this Bug's mission and got a ticket to the viewing platform. The platform overlooks the site where over 2,800 people lost their lives. If they sold tickets instead of giving them away I'm sure people would still come. Are all these people there because of morbid curiousity? Perhaps. Would it have been wrong to mark the viewing platform as a virtual cache when it overlooks a site of mass murder? Would it be wrong to post a virtual cache at the USS Arizona memorial in Pearl Harbor, the Bloody Angle at Antietam or on Omaha Beach in Normandy? I don't think so since these examples are significant places in our nation's history - they are geographic touchstones to events that have shaped our nation's history and the character of its people, whereas the sites in the proposed cache (or Nicole Simpson's condo or Sharon Tate's house for that matter), IMHO, are not. But where does one draw the line? I can see people posting virtuals for Ford's Theatre, the grassy knoll, Heart of Atlanta motel, etc. It's a slippery slope.
  24. quote: Okay Smithdw, if that is your REAL name! Your explaination sounds convincing, but how do you explain that shadowy figure in the grassy knoll? Speaking of which, the Warren Commission has found that this Travel Bug was solely responsible for that event.
