  1. quote:you own two GARMIN GPS units, you are allowed to obtain a second unlock code for the same region at no additional charge Let me get thsi straight - you get a gps (certain models) and you can unlock one region - I can live with that. But if you get 2 gps you have to unlock the same region??? YOu already have that region why would you want to unlock it again? ----(sig line)---> Did you ever do any trail maintainence? - if so you will know that all but the most worn trails need continuous maintenance to prevent mother nature from reclaiming it. herd paths are quickly reclaimed - k2dave

  4. From http://www.heraldnet.com/Stories/02/11/5/16012971.cfm quote:accounts can be purchased for $30 a year. There are about 75,000 paying members Didn't know it was so big. 5. Tomebug she did it 3 F#$%@n times!!!!! Once I may understand, even 2x but when it gets to #3 it's a pattern and she has had time to think of what she did inbetween. I don't know if it was done in the same day - if so I can give her a little slack but if they were on different days she should have known better (esp. once she stole the 1st one and had time to reflect). She, being a geocacher herself makes matters worse. ----(sig line)---> Did you ever do any trail maintainence? - if so you will know that all but the most worn trails need continuous maintenance to prevent mother nature from reclaiming it. herd paths are quickly reclaimed - k2dave
  6. Even if she was authorized, she went about it the wrong way. Since she is a geocacher she should know that the correct way would be to contact the geocacher and tell them her concerns and by what authority she is requestign they should be removed. If I got an email from ski3pin that said that ranger smith at ###-###-#### would like me to remove my GC at __________ because of ___________ and he is the land manager. I would call ranger smith and verify ski3pin's email and his authority - if I couldn't get him I would temp. archive the cache till I could straighten it out. Then once I confirmed it I would archive it and go to get it. why couldn't she do it this way? ----(sig line)---> Did you ever do any trail maintainence? - if so you will know that all but the most worn trails need continuous maintenance to prevent mother nature from reclaiming it. herd paths are quickly reclaimed - k2dave
  7. One thing you can do to check the consistiance is to set a waypoint at a known location that you can get back to(like the crack in the sidewalk infront of your house) then check several times (maybe different days) to see how far off it is. You could also compare it to other gps's (don't use them at the same time as they will interfere) - you could go to a geocache and see how far off you are from the cache. ----(sig line)---> Did you ever do any trail maintainence? - if so you will know that all but the most worn trails need continuous maintenance to prevent mother nature from reclaiming it. herd paths are quickly reclaimed - k2dave

  9. Magellian nothing just stick with the 3+ form factor - holds a lock better then a pittbull on a.... ham bone Admittadally the etrex line should have a better antenna. ----(sig line)---> Did you ever do any trail maintainence? - if so you will know that all but the most worn trails need continuous maintenance to prevent mother nature from reclaiming it. herd paths are quickly reclaimed - k2dave
  10. brdad the one you show is for the 3,3+, V model line which has an external removable antenna already (a dam good one at that. To hook up the amplified antenna you must detach the antenna that came with the unit (the small trangular prism antenna on back of these models) so it will only get one signal. Also I would assume any model with a external antenna adapter and an internal antenna build in would have a way of deactivating the internal antenna while using the external antenna. As for the time difference - for all practical purposes the signal hits both the internal and external antenna at the same time traveling at the speed of light through air. However the signal is converted into an electrical signal through the antennas (and throught the wire and the transmitting antenna in the case of the re-radiating antenna). The signal must travel at the speed of electricity through the wire which is about 1/3 the speed of light through air. So I might have answered my own question. If the total antenna to antenna length is lets say 3 feet then signals through this cable would appear to be about 9 feet further from the birds then they actually are. Most of this error would go to altitude which isn't that accurate to begin with. So perhaps we're back to an error of 3 ft (rough estimation) added because of 2 antennas. An added error of 3 ft when using a unit that is accurate to 20-30 ft (or 7-15 ft waas) is well worth it considering the increased signal strength (and hence increased accuracy). OK I'm sold - sign me up! ----(sig line)---> Did you ever do any trail maintainence? - if so you will know that all but the most worn trails need continuous maintenance to prevent mother nature from reclaiming it. herd paths are quickly reclaimed - k2dave
  11. Interesting idea but one possible side effect I see is that the etrex internal antenna may be getting 2 of the same signals. Depending on the angle and obstructions of the 2 antennas (the internal etrex and the external reradiating) and the time delay of the reradiating antenna I would suspect that accuracy may be comprimized. I would suspect that a setup can arise where one locked bird is transmitting directly to the internal antenna while the other 3 are transmitting to the external antenna and would have a delay. Now the delay would be small but gps's use very small differences to begin with so it might make a difference. ----(sig line)---> Did you ever do any trail maintainence? - if so you will know that all but the most worn trails need continuous maintenance to prevent mother nature from reclaiming it. herd paths are quickly reclaimed - k2dave
  12. Ok after reading it my 1st impressing would be no, but after thinking about it I will give it a maybe since you will be giving out the waypoint of the house and the cachers must get the correct one (which should be easy enough). I didn't vote because there wasn't a maybe choice - well now I'm in the 'I don't know' catagory - no that isn't a choice either, hmmmm I guess I will just abstain. ----(sig line)---> Did you ever do any trail maintainence? - if so you will know that all but the most worn trails need continuous maintenance to prevent mother nature from reclaiming it. herd paths are quickly reclaimed - k2dave
  13. that link didn't work for me - it just goes to http://www.geocaching.com/hideseek/ page. w/o seeing it, I really don't know what this cache is about and can't vote on it (well I can vote on it but it wouldn't meen much) ----(sig line)---> Did you ever do any trail maintainence? - if so you will know that all but the most worn trails need continuous maintenance to prevent mother nature from reclaiming it. herd paths are quickly reclaimed - k2dave
  14. Just to go back to the GC man and the Groundspeak man - I realize that what we think is not relivant to possible future legal action and it may be better to aviod even the remotte possibility but how I see it the 2 are totally different, the GC man is going 'Yippie!' while the Groundspeak guy is yelling 'Where the #$@* is that thing?". The reason I asked in the 1st place is that I really couldn't see the relationship. - just had to add that. ----(sig line)---> Did you ever do any trail maintainence? - if so you will know that all but the most worn trails need continuous maintenance to prevent mother nature from reclaiming it. herd paths are quickly reclaimed - k2dave

  16. Maybe they want to maximize the exposure, maybe root for the underdog, maybe some feel that geocaching.com is not the last word in geocaching, maybe give people a choice. It really could be many reasons. I looked at the site and found that there was no cache in my area so I uploaded one of mine that I thought was one of my better ones. Also I have a cache about 100 mi. away again in an area where not many caches are so I uploaded it too. The cache was initially listed here and now is on both. I fall into the root for the underdog & geocaching.com is not geocaching theories. Do I really expect many/any logs on that site? - not really but if I do I might create a 'other site' only cache As for more work - yes but very little more - just copy and paste.
  17. Team StitchesOnQuilts um...if you have read this thread before you posted you will see that Jeremy has said: quote:Since I do pay for it, I appreciate the post. Hopefully I can clear up some of the questions. and quote:There's certainly no reason to censor a discussion like this, and no it isn't inappropriate to discuss it here. I'd rather do it here where I read often and can respond to misinformation if it crops up. - both from Jeremy in this thread (if you bothered to read it) So what I said and the reasons that I started this thread are valid according to the site owner/opperator. I have beat the OP to death and have learned alot in the process for such a short amount of time. Many have jumped to Jeremy's defense even though he wasn't attacked which is frankly kind of wierd. Many of you have assumed I said things that I didn't. For all who needs a summary of what I really said: The site has changed over time in my eyes. This change is overall negative IMHO. I blame the change on the closing of geocaching.com community by the actions of geocaching.com. I still like this site. I think it's a good site. I am not thrilled on the mapping function of this site. You may feal differently. 1+1=2. With that said there is not much more to add so I give you the last word (I got to get some work done ). ----(sig line)---> Did you ever do any trail maintainence? - if so you will know that all but the most worn trails need continuous maintenance to prevent mother nature from reclaiming it. herd paths are quickly reclaimed - k2dave
  18. Also the GX is very simple to make - I think I'm staying with that one. ----(sig line)---> Did you ever do any trail maintainence? - if so you will know that all but the most worn trails need continuous maintenance to prevent mother nature from reclaiming it. herd paths are quickly reclaimed - k2dave
  19. quote:That is using an identifiable element of a trademark are you saying that the GC man looks close enough to the Groundspeak man? I didn't notice any resemblance before you pointed it out and now after then only thing that is simular is that the slant of the GC man is the same. ----(sig line)---> Did you ever do any trail maintainence? - if so you will know that all but the most worn trails need continuous maintenance to prevent mother nature from reclaiming it. herd paths are quickly reclaimed - k2dave
  20. SR&D What you said was exactly what I am getting at. Most of the things I have said revolve around a change that I perceive to the geocaching.com site. Then I get some post saying that they disagree with everything I say - WTF they disagree w/ how I perceive??? It shows to me a blind loyality to the geocaching site and not reading what I am posting. As for concreate examples I didn't want to list them because they have been mentioned in the past and the postings degenerate to the argument that Jeremy blows vs. Jeremy is a god - which admittadly some of this has reared it's ugly head. ----(sig line)---> Did you ever do any trail maintainence? - if so you will know that all but the most worn trails need continuous maintenance to prevent mother nature from reclaiming it. herd paths are quickly reclaimed - k2dave
  21. I wondered if you read everything I said - in particular: 1 - I am saying that its commercialization* is not transparent to the geocachers * Where I defined commercialiazation later as the move to protect geocaching.com by closing the availability of such things as the logo. 2 - When I began geocaching this site was more like an open community now you have to worry about such thing like copywrite infringement. 3 - during the transition to a pay site I've noticed a change in the site. 4 - What I mean is that this site has developed sort of attitude of "I'm what Geocaching is" and by doing so has lost part of what Geocaching was 5 - Geocaching was an open community (some of you have posted this) and that was part of the heart and soul of geocaching, it now feels very closed and protected. 6 - it seems like most of the GCers out there like (or don't mind) the changes or don't know of them and like the site 7 - To sum up what they said is that they have too noticed a change that focuses more on the site itself then on the activity the site promotes 8 - Also I must admit that the geocaching.com site is very well done although is it still rough in certain places*. * the place that I was thinking was the mapping function where you can see many geocaches on a map - there is a much better site out there (IMHO), although now overloaded, for looking for geocaches on a map then the one that geocaching.com provides. 9 - I wouldn't worry about it too much if Jeremy makes some bad choices and basically kills off this site as another will come along - after all this isn't Cuba 10 - I guess it is a function of popularity that these rules must evolve and this is by far the most popular geocaching site out there. OK now all you GCers who said you disagree with everything I said take the test above. Give yourself one point for every statement that you disargee with. add up your points and post your total. If you get a 10 - you pass - you totally disagree with everything I have said you get an If you get a 9 or less - you fail and get a Also so nobody else can honsetly post that they disagree with everything I have said I add: 1+1=2 ----(sig line)---> Did you ever do any trail maintainence? - if so you will know that all but the most worn trails need continuous maintenance to prevent mother nature from reclaiming it. herd paths are quickly reclaimed - k2dave
  22. quote:In other words, it's not about the sport any more, it's all rules, regulations and legal stuff that has nothing to do with the core sport itself. Is that your problem? I think that is a good way to put it. What I do know for sure is that I have noticed a change in this site and I dislike the general changes - well dislike is too strong a word - more like "less like". Part of the reason could very well be all the new rules that sprung up like don't bury the caches, have to ask permission before placing them, don't leave a jar of honey in a cache if bears might be in the area, don't place a cache in a bomb testing area or near a minefield, don't place caches that look like pipebombs near schools, blah blah blah... well you get the idea. I guess it is a function of popularity that these rules must evolve and this is by far the most popular geocaching site out there. ----(sig line)---> Did you ever do any trail maintainence? - if so you will know that all but the most worn trails need continuous maintenance to prevent mother nature from reclaiming it. herd paths are quickly reclaimed - k2dave
  23. I think these people emailed me because they think that you may delete/ban them but I really don't know or havn't asked. I would expect that they emailed me instead of posting because they didn't want to identify themselves to the board so I don't feel comfortable posting them (or emailing them privatly to another). To sum up what they said is that they have too noticed a change that focuses more on the site itself then on the activity the site promotes. Also I must admit that the geocaching.com site is very well done although is it still rough in certain places. I am also glad to hear that you have some contigency plans just incase you drop off the planet or something. I wouldn't worry about it too much if Jeremy makes some bad choices and basically kills off this site as another will come along - after all this isn't Cuba ----(sig line)---> Did you ever do any trail maintainence? - if so you will know that all but the most worn trails need continuous maintenance to prevent mother nature from reclaiming it. herd paths are quickly reclaimed - k2dave
  24. quote:It's Geocaching.COM not Geocaching.ORG actually it's both but it really doesn't matter as the .com/net/org endings have many crossovers and you can really tell nothing by the ending - plus this argument is getting tired. Even though not actually my point Team Bohica makes a very good point (possibly another thread should be started). What happens if Jeremy, for whatever reason, stops doing what he does for this site? Actually I didn't know that mentioning a rival web site was not even permitted (and automatically blocked from what I hear). anyhoo it seems like most of the GCers out there like (or don't mind) the changes or don't know of them and like the site - which is fine. Interestingly I have have gotten some emails supporting my feelings. ----(sig line)---> Did you ever do any trail maintainence? - if so you will know that all but the most worn trails need continuous maintenance to prevent mother nature from reclaiming it. herd paths are quickly reclaimed - k2dave
  25. quote:commercial? In what possible sense? Perhaps commercial was the wrong word. What I mean is that this site has developed sort of attitude of "I'm what Geocaching is" and by doing so has lost part of what Geocaching was. Geocaching was an open community (some of you have posted this) and that was part of the heart and soul of geocaching, it now feels very closed and protected. Some of you have stated that I could have avoided the messageboard and the like but that's not me - I like to find out about these things just I am somewhat less satified with the evolution of this site because I found out. ----(sig line)---> Did you ever do any trail maintainence? - if so you will know that all but the most worn trails need continuous maintenance to prevent mother nature from reclaiming it. herd paths are quickly reclaimed - k2dave
