  1. Zolgar does not. Zolgar has fairly tough feet (though not as good as he used too), and can tolerate some semblance of stabbyness. However Zolgar caches in Arizona. Urban caches are too screwn with broken glass, not to mention the hot ground in the summer time. rural caches.. Well, got one word: cactus. Way too much cacti in the areas Zolgar caches in for him to even consider it barefooted. Also, he tends to like doing some of his caching from his bike, which he has special shoes for that hook in to his pedals. Removing and replacing shoes every time would be a PITA.
  2. Cachers used to be different. They sued to be the environmentally friendly sort, the people who loved to get out in to the wild and roam... Then GPSrs got cheaper, caching started to get popular. Now there are still those of us who care about the environment, but for every 1 of us who practices CITO, there's prolly.. 10 more who don't, at least. And at least one of those who don't is the traditional American slob who doesn't think twice about just hucking their trash where ever. >.> Would be willing to bet that if you had a way to look at the statistics of CITO practitioners (not thinking of events as some attend CITO events because it's a group thing and makes them look good), you would find that most of the cachers who place caches in the wild, are the same ones who practice CITO.
  3. Zolgar understands what the OP was trying to say. Zolgar understood it from reading the first post. He even agrees with it, to an extent. However he finds the OPs statement amusing. There is a 3 mile hike, Zolgar will assume that this 3 mile hike is diagonally across a small feild, with LOTS of zigging and zagging, making the field barely more than 1 square mile. Within a 1 square mile field there is space for 100 geocaches according to the rules. (1/10th a mile in any direction), so even if we presume they are placed such that they could somehow take up 2 spots, that would still leave 50 spots. The OP expresses that the area is "filled" by 10 micros. Zolgar is willing to bet that with a little creativity and the willingness to do a bit of bushwhacking, the OP could hide several larger caches in the same area.
  4. I get the idea. .. I think. I'm just .. missing something. >.> Guess that's what happens when your math knowledge only extends as far as a normal human being would ever use. >.>
  5. At that price you could resell them! Offer 'em for $5 each and you're making a ton of profit, and still below any surplus store! The army surplus store near me sells them 2/$7 when they have them. That last time I was at the closest army surplus store near me (about a year ago) that had a bunch of them for 3 for $10. Bah my local on sucks then. They're like $10 each starting.
  6. Zolgar has weird opinions to be warned. Cemeteries mean nothing to him. There are empty husks in boxes buried 6 feet under ground. Big whoop! They're frelling DEAD. They don't care. This does not mean Zolgar finds it acceptable to tromp willynilly through a cemetery and desecrate the area. Zolgar understands that these places mean a lot to those who have friends and family burried there, and thus he does not wish to disrespect these individuals. This leaves Zolgar with more respect for a cemetery than most would expect. He does not, however, find cemetery caches to be disrespectful (in general). Quite the opposite he tends to see them as a good way to bring someone to the site. Zolgar does not, though, support generic micros in a modern cemetery just placed for the sake of placing a cache in a cemetery. Zolgar however strongly supports caches places in old cemeteries that history has forgotten. He also supports caches places at cemeteries to draw special attention to certain individuals. Though he does regret the fact that many cachers are just "There's a cache here!" and fail to notice the reason for the location. Most importantly though, Zolgar supports each cachers right to choose how they cache. He will likely not place, or seek, a generic cemetery cache. But he will not tell people they cannot, or should not be able to, do them.
  7. There's 2 options for the DS, in both instances you need an R4 or other external memory card reader for the DS. You can either save each cache you want as an HTML file, and open it that way. Or you cn get DS Cache, which is an ultra basic program available for free, similar functionality to CacheMate.
  8. Some GPSrs can be a little difficult to figure out how to use, but I assure you that if you had simply took the time you spent writing a ranting forum post and instead used it to read the instructions for your unit, you would probably have about 1/4 the problems. And most of the ones I've seen anyways, were easy enough to use that a little intuition went a long ways, and I can assure you, I do not work for NASA nor any other like field where I would have to be that intelligent. I work manufacturing. If you find you really need help with your GPSr, then you could try posting a calm, polite message and note what GPSr you have (the more specific the better "Garmin" no good, "Garmin Vista" decent, "Garmin Vista HCx" is ideal), and explaining what issues you are having. I am sure someone on this form is familiar enough with your unit to be able to help you.

  10. I do have coords for where we was stuck though: N 32 23.934 W 110 36.439 (Don't use the geocaching google maps, will jump you to Summerhaven-ish area.) Only about 10 miles off the road actually.. Torrey's estimate of 20 was horrible. >.> Dan and Weston were a huge help, and .. a lot better than the loser tow truck driver we were going to get. Splitting up once we got back tot he road kinda sucked, because.. they were sorta awesome.
  11. Wel, if Team Redsky (the parentile units) is with me.. things get much more complicated. the night before we discuss where we want to go caching. Maybe poke the area a bit to see if there are any that just scream out "FIND US!", of course being sure to pick ones without very high terrain ratings (3 is usually the highest), and without too terribly long of noted hikes. (Mother has an artificial hip). We will run a PQ on the area, and load said PQ on to all 3 GPSrs, moms PDA and my laptop. As we head to our destination, I begin going through Cachemate, looking at what's nearby and what's near the cache we're going to. I'll mention some that look promising and we'll more or less do some ad-hoc planning as we go. Occasionally we end up.. just kinda going off .. that way, for whatever reason. Like the time we romped around Sanctuary Cove on a caching trip. No geocache, but a beautiful place and a wonderful hike. It's also not uncommon for something to distract us. Be it ruins, a pretty bird, or .. "I wonder what's down there?" ... that's why we usually only get like 3-7 finds a trip.
  12. Don't forget to take lots of pictures. Sadly pictures weren't on the mind when we were pulling it out. >.> But, we did get the truck out thanks to a couple of equally crazy chaps, most likely ShowStop's friend. Thanks for the help folks.
  13. Posted over on the Jeep boards. And.. I'm presuming one of ShowStop's friends just contacted me.. With luc, we'll get the truck out tonight.
  14. My phone # is 520 419 7939, it'll be on me all day at work.
  15. *further update* ... due to eh.. retarded family s*** we'll say. We have to recover the truck tomorrow (Monday) after work. We're offering $200 (cash) for someone who can get the truck out for us. Preferably starting mid evening, however if you need to start earlier it can be arranged. It will probably take 5-7 hours, so it is a bit of an undertaking. We have a potential lined up, however, neither Torrey or I want to do business with him after tonight. Was supposed to get us tonight. Left us hanging and jerked us around for 3 hours. Little hope that he'll be any better tomorrow, and unless we have to, neither of us want to pay him, anyways.
  16. Alone? I run a 200 PQ for the area (due to DS cache only being able ot have 200 WPs), plug the PQ in to DSCache, and my Vista HCx. Load the backpack up and find the closest one to where I am, get on the bike and go thataway! get there, make the find, hit 'find next' and go.. THATAWAY! .. with the 'rents. It's a much more drawn out process...
  17. Same with my family, sans the radios. Sometimes I throw my DS in the bundle though due to having caching software on it. It usually runs something like this: Night before, mom or I run a PQ, forward it to dad and the other party. PQ gets loaded on to my GPS, my lap top, moms GPS, moms PDA and dad's GPS. From home we decide "we want to hit this one first". We get in the van I hook up the laptop and start plotting a course between my GPS, Mapsource and GSAK. Get to the cachesite, everyone gets out their GPSs, , mom grabs her PDA (usually, if she doesn't I do), and we schlep! We. are nerds.
  18. *update* LandCruiser fell through for today. (Our boss is an idiot) If there is anyone with a 4WD vehicle that could at least get us up there so we can clean the truck out, it would be incredibly appreciated, as we have some valuables we had to leave in the truck due to hoofing it far enough to get a signal. If you think you can help us, give me a call at five two zero four one nine seven nine three nine
  19. Directly from another forum, topis was "Important lesson in life:" Never pretend a 2 wheel drive Ford F150, is a 4 wheel drive Jeep Wrangler. Thursday after work, Roo is like "Let's go up to the mountain." It had been a bleag day at work, and the drive is relaxing. I figure we're just gonna go up the mountain, and come back down the other side, like normal. So, I don't bother grabbing anything other than borrowing my parents power inverter so that I can work some on the D20 Modern game I'm running on the dull parts of the drive. and I don't bother changing in to blue jeans and boots, instead of shorts and ... sandal-tennis shoe hybrid things. We did also grab the guns, on the off chance of deciding to stop for a bit of shooting (Redington Pass has 3 official shooting spots) Between mile posts 26 and 27, Torrey spots a little road he's not been down before and decides to take it. For the most part, it's smoothish sailing. A little rough in a few places for the F150, but nothing too bad. Until we reach a rocky slope I'd say it was between a 25% and 35% grade, covered in loose rocks. By the angle of it, we didn't see it until we were right on top of it, and already going down. There was no way in hell we were making it back up there, so .. well we kept going forward. ended up about 20 miles off the main road, where there was a camp site, and barely a semblance of a road going off the other way, that Roo knew he'd get high sided on if he tried to got that way. So we turn around.. Get maybe .. 100' before the truck gets stuck on a steep incline with too loose of ground to get traction on. Back up, try it again.. get like .. 20 more feet, and get stuck again. Check our phone signals. Nothing. Fortunately Roo keeps a decent first aid kit and some water in his truck. We took stock of everything, and loaded what we needed in to our backpacks (we both carry them to work), rigged a shoulder strap for my shotgun, and started walking at about midnight. It was an overcast night, so the light was dim, but fortunately Roo and I both have decent enough night vision that we really didn't need a flashlight (we had one though). Around 1:30, Roo needs a bit of a break from walking (he's asthmatic and in poor shape), we're near the peak of a hill, so I leave my bag with him and stay within ear shot, take the light, shotgun and phone up and get 'emergency service only'.. Good enough (like I said, 20 miles from the main road, and there another .. couple to even get to someones house, we had 3 liters of water between the two of us, no food, and an asthmatic. We would have been lucky to make the road before it got too hot to keep going) I .. try 911 a couple times, signal is flaky, and never fully get through. So I head back down, rest with Roo a bit, kinda hoping thy could get the location from my phone. After an hour I head back up, in this instance I actually manage to get a .. good enough signal, I am able to stay on the phone with the operator for about 4 minutes, get a rough description of where the truck is and where we are. Roo wants to keep going, thinking no one is going to come. I manage to convince him to stay put (they can get our approx. location from the cell phone), this is about 2:30. Around 3-3:30, an airplane goes over head and circles us a couple times, by that point even Roo knows we have to stay put. As the sun starts coming up Roo starts worrying, thinking they're not coming for us. I try to tell him to be patient 'cause, first it's only been a few hours, and second, that road is a treacherous one in the dark, and they didn't even get our location until the spotter plane found us. So I toss him my phone and let him go up and make the call (figuring that if he gets through it might calm him down a bit). The operator more or less tells him to relax, they know where we are and help is on the way. Somewhere between 8 and 9 AM (time sorta blended together there, especially as I eventually drifted to sleep a bit), a couple guys from Pima County Sheriff's Search and Rescue ride up on quads, get things situated and one of them heads off to the truck to get the GPS coords (which I think were bad, really don't think it's the right area). From there it's about an hour on the quads back to their trucks, and from their trucks it's about an hour down to the nearest Circle K, where Roo is able to call his grandmother to pick us up, and we send a quick call to our boss telling him what happened. about 2 hours later I'm finally home, get a long shower, post on the GeoCaching forums hoping someone with a decent 4 wheel drive truck can help us (need to get Roo's truck out of there, and don't want to pay for an off-road tow truck >.>) Then promptly pass out, and don't really wake up until about 6 AM saturday. ... If you're lucky I'll post the videos we were taking on YouTube. >.>
  20. Isn't the legend just a USB Micro cable? Small, rectangular with a tiny notch off each side? If it is, then that cable is dirt cheap and you can buy it at any electronics store. Hell, if it is, I may have an extra one laying about I'd send you for a few bucks.
  21. >.> amusingly, I'm the cause for this being made (indirectly), and am just now to posting this on here.. I started using it right after it was released. It is a great little program, obviously not quite as good yet as Cachemate, but it's better than can be expected for a free first-draft program. I really do hope the creator gets us a new version sometime soon. Perhaps with a 500 WP capacity and/or the ability to switch between gpx files. And Jam4ar, function > speed > looks Also, if you odn't have one.. set up a paypal account we can donate a bit to, maybe donations coming in will help you get motivated to make v2? (if not, I have a bull whip!)
  22. Sounds like you need more than a 4x4 Jeep (lest it get stuck beside your 2x4). Better use something with real 4x4, like a Ford Bronco (or a modified Jeep) to rescue your P.U. By the way, what are the conditions that took your truck? Mud?? Sand?? Washout?? High sided?? Roll over?? Suspension removal?? Drained oil pan?? Photo's and (bad) coordinated are welcome here. Take your camera when you return because you'll appreciate a well documented recovery in the future! Loose rock combined with a hill. A jeep would have been fine for what we were doing. MIGHT even work for pulling him up the hill, but we've got a line on a Land Cruiser to help up, hopefully it'll work. If nothing else we can winch it up with the hand winch (tethered to the landcruiser), hopefully that will give us enough purchase on the terrain. I'll try to get some pics of it before we pull it out though. And if you like I'll post the fully story here, now that I'm awake.
  23. So, my mate's birthday is coming up. He enjoys going out caching with me, but doesn't have a GPSr of his own, and would like one. I'd buy him a new unit for his birthday, but he'd kill me for spending that much on him. My budget is around $75 (He'd kill me for spending that much too, but I'll just tell him "I got it used for a good price" ) The main requirement I have for it, is that it can be connected to the computer to be able to get the caches loaded on to it from GSAK. If it uses a special cable (not just a USB Micro), I'd really prefer the cable be included. User manuals, software, etc. don't matter too much. Condition wise, as long as it works and you don't need a screwdriver to push the buttons, we're good. My preference would be in the Garmin eTrex line, as I'm familiar with them and have heard little to nothing bad about any of them. you can either post here, or drop me an email at Yverthel@yahoo.com
  24. Zolgar will say that he would like to see the difference between a 'micro' (altoids tin, pill bottle) and a 'nano' (pill fob, bison tube, whatever the hell those little magnetic dot ones are) defined on the site, but that is all. Zolgar does not agree that micro/nanos are different from all other caching. The style of hide may be different, and how you look for them may be different, but the methods are still similar enough that they are traditionals.
  25. I hate bounding in here to ask for help like this, but... a friend and I were out roaming, and .. he likes to pretend his 2 wheel drive Ford F150 is a 4 wheel drive Jeep. He got stuck. We got extracted by PC Sheriff S&R guys on quads. His truck is still there though, shortly past trail marker 4407, on the trail between Mile Markers 26 and 27 on Redington Pass. (I would have GPS coords, but it looks like they were bad) We need help from someone with a larger 4 wheel drive truck, preferably with a winch (we do have a hand winch though). We will of course offer to pay for your gas (round trip), and will try to offer at least a bit for your time. And the drive is beautiful. if you don't get up that way regularly. It would be super incredibly awesome if we could get the help either later in the day Saturday, or anytime Sunday. (as we had to leave some stuff in the truck due to trecking someplace to get cell phone signal.) If I'm rambling incessantly and making no sense, I apologize, I'll rewrite this after I get some sleep. (about 28 hours awake now)
