  1. Pens are faster than stamps, yes. But if you're like me, your hand writing is horrible! I got my stamper from VistaPrint, along with my calling cards. Yes, I am a cheap bastard! Stamper: Zolgar the Insane __/__/__ Toy Soldier, E.A.R.T.H. Helping Doctor Steel take over the world.
  2. thanks for interpreting my "incomplete" sentences could u please post examples of caches that have more than one track to follow ty Texas High School Football Cache I've been considering a cache that has 2 options to find it.. 1: weird puzzle. 2: 3 or 4 "related" TBs, that you have to find all 4 of them (or at least et the information off of them), to get the coordinates. Interesting the 4 TBs goals would all be to either get TO said cache, or stay away from it.
  3. You might want to scroll down the forum a bit and go to the GPS Garage Sale section. I'd say look for a used Garmin eTrex (Legend, Venture or Vista), they're all decent units, very rugged (the local S&R uses Legends still), easy to use and they tend to have a good battery life on 2 AAs.
  4. Why one state? If you can do it, why not aim to cache every state in the continental 48? It gives you something to KEEP working for.. And here's an idea: Make a personal TB that stays on you, mark it in all the caches you reach, and if it ever reaches a point that you can no longer cache, either release the TB or give instructions to release it if you're unable to. So your legacy can continue tying to reach caches all over the world, even if you no longer can.
  5. Wouldn't it also depend on things the reviewer might have to check out before they could approve the cache? Such as perhaps X state's policy on caches in state parks, or the like?
  6. But biological media is impossible to back up and highly susceptible to deterioration and decay. this one made no mention of biological media.
  7. >.> Can I use my shotgun? .. Oh wait, you're in California, they don't like boomsticks over there!
  8. This entity requires nothing other than the automated recording device in its cranium. ... >.>
  9. ... The REAL problem is when you get an amateur novelist writing logs! You're just like "Shut up already!" *is guilty of that sometimes*
  10. Yes, it makes sense. No, it is not allowed by the guidelines. Only one cache can have a physical container at any given location. There is, however a workaround... Geocache 1: Multi cache. Standard. Geocache 2: Puzzle cache, expressing cache #1 has to be found to find this. Alternatively you might be able to set cache #2 as an 'offset' multi, where you simply have to gain information from the posted coords. I think it would work, technically, but would be pushing it.
  11. Car units CAN be used for caching, you generally need to switch them so that they will show you the exact coords of where you are, and compare hose to the coords of the cache you're looking for. Also if you can't find caches, if you're looking for urban ones, there's a good many that are incredibly small and hard to find, especially if you're looking for them at dusk or later. If you want a handheld unit I personally recommend one of the Garmin eTrex line. They're easy enough that even a trained ape could use them. They're durable, and they have all the functions you need for caching. The price range is $120-$250 IIRC.
  12. 25 heah. Been caching a little over a year. My mate Roo is 24 and been caching as long as I have.
  13. I dunno. I think by 'undercomplicating' it, you're actually doing everyone involved a bit of a disservice. First of all, while the Geomate Jr. is "cheap", it's actually a $70 toy with ONE use. And I doubt the 'update kit' will be free. It may let you do 'spontaneous geocaching' a little easier.. But honestly? What is that going to introduce MOST people to? Urban micros. LPCs, Magnadots, etc.* 1: These are a bad thing for most people to start out by looking for, as they can be very hard to find, and .. newbie cachers don't expect something the size of their pinky tip. 2: Most of these are .. very poor representations of caching. It also doesn't give you information like the last logs (so that you can tell if this cache hasn't been found and was maybe muggled) And by what I have read (at its core), it doesn't let you say "This new cache looks interesting, I want to go do it!" So you spend .. half the price of a 'basic' GPS, get an ultrabasic GPS that only serves one single function and offers comparatively limited access to geocaching.. ... It's almost like the "Demo" version of geocaching (like a lot of video games release demos).. Except for the fact that you have to pay for it, and it doesn't showcase the good parts of the game. I understand what you're trying to do with this product. But I honestly feel that a good number of the people who get this without prior geocaching experience, will not continue to cache. And for experienced cachers, I would say most of us will stick to our real GPSs. *Looking at caches from my home coordinates: (Please note that if you happen to know me and/or know the caches I'm talking about, I do not intend to bash anyone or their caches. I'm commenting on these caches from a "new cacher" viewpoint, basically) Closest: 1.5/1.5 micro. An envelope made from camo tape, tucked in to a guard rail, over a dull wash, with a bit of a view of the rail yard. Second: 1/1 Magnadot in a small community garden. Garden is cool, but someone not experienced with looking for caches of the like probably wouldn't find it. Third: 1.5/1 Micro on a busy, steep and thin overpass that over looks the rail yard. Okay, a bit of a view, but otherwise the area is s***. (I avoid this overpass like the plague) Fourth: 3/2 'small', hidden off a local bike path, in an exceptionally filthy that is full of beer bottles and other trash. The trash is actually used to camo the hide. Fifth: 1/1 altoids Tin LPC. Sixths: 1/1.5 micro multi. Decent cache, but would likely not be included in the Geomate, or if it was it wouldn't be doable (offset, coords are obtained from information at the base coords) Seventh: 1.5/1.5 magnadot micro on a fence in a large park. It's part of a decent series, but once again, it's not a great example of caching for a newbie. Eighth: 2/1 Magnadot micro at a memorial in a park. Once again, it's a cache that brings you to a decent area, but a newbie cacher will have a hell of a time finding it. Ninth: 1.5/1 "Regular" multi. Might be a good one for a starting cacher! Although, the park is very crowded on the weekends and when I've been by it, I've found that people seem to be hanging out near GZ for the first stage. Tenth: 1/1 cigar tube. this is actually a decent cache for a beginner, slightly challenging to find, but not too bad, and it takes you to a really nice location in town. So the closest five, none are great examples caching that would really get someone hooked. Of the closest 10, two maybe three might.... sorry for the major derailment here >.>
  14. Looks like a cool area. It's beautiful out there. If I had a vehicle that could make it there and back (other than the bicycle), I'd so place a cache where we got stuck.. and maybe where we were able to get a cellphone signal. (has a nice view )
  15. Zolgar leaves all manner of things. One of his favorite items to leave though is 2 packs of AA batteries. He will buy large packages of cheaper batteries, and then break them down, taping the batteries in to 2s. Something that can be quiteuseful. He is also known to leave small first aid kits, sometimes decks of cards and the like. What does Zolgar take? Mostly he will take trash out of caches. He also usually ends up with little plastic spiders. Sometimes he'll take pins that strike his fancy. Especially since his tac. vest has started to accumulate pins.
  16. I'm not sure what a "Bucket List" is. Definition? It's coined from the movie 'Bucket List'. It refers to a list of things you want to do before you "kick the bucket."
  17. Are you serious? Did you read Bittsen? He's ANGRY, repressed, and possibly psychotic! LOLOLOLOL! No, just starved for some feminine "attention". ~LOL~ Welcome to the club!
  18. you might consider expanding your search to the full eTrex line (Legend, Venture, Vista, and .. I think there's one more.), and especially one of the HC/HCx models (high sensitivity receivers, allow you to pick up signal quicker, and keep signal better indoors and in areas that will mess with signals). They're all good units and have a nearly identical interface.
  19. if I had means of doing them, I would do so in heartbeat. But the Vista can't handle them, and there's not enough in Arizona for it to be worth pursuing a new GPS for.
  20. Increasing the radius would vastly lower the number of caches in an area. It would also make it quite hard to have more then one cache in a public park, etc. I think Zolgar was talking about the radius for a single cacher. For example, I couldn't place 2 caches less than 1 mile apart, but anyone else could place their caches in between as long as they meet current distance guidelines. Doing that would prevent someone making a 'power trail' of lame micros on a hiking trail and allow someone else to put a creative small or regular there also. I agree with the concept but I am sure there will be much dissent claiming 'GC.com is changing the rules.' Dave's got it right. This is what Zolgar was saying. This would prevent a single cacher from making a major power trail, or simply saturating an area to the point no other cacher could place a cache there. Zolgar understand that this would lead to complaints about the "rules changing", however, these rules were written years ago, when GeoCaching was still a small thing, now it is an ever-growing sport which gets new people every day. The rules of a sport will evolve with the sport. Of course any caches breaking said new rule would be grandfathered. It's not like Zolgar is proposing that we institute a change and archive all the violating caches. Or, proposing instituting a maximum lifespan of a cache.
  21. Zolgar wonders if it might be worth while for Groundspeak to institute a 1 or .5 mile rule between any one persons caches, to further prevent power trailing and/or total saturation. This complaint seems to have grown more common recently, with the increasing popularity of GeoCaching.
  22. Well, am I hiking to the cache, hitting a park and grab from in Team Redsky's van, or hitting urban micros on the bike? In option 1: I have a tactical vest that I use instead of a backpack. It has a pocket for just about everything. and I carry more than enough extra stuff in it that.. I never need, but am glad I have just in case. In option 2: I usually have the tac vest with me, but I'll just grab a few things from it for the PnG. Sometimes it's just my backpack though (which is in the van when caching due to having my laptop in it) in option 3: I have a small black box that goes on my bike rack as a trunk. Need to either obtain a new box or make some modifications to this one..
  23. Between the two in price there is also the Garmin eTrex Vista HCx. I've been extremely happy with mine. The Venture HC is a good model too though. Not familiar enough with the 60CSx to comment.
  24. >.> It's a little known fact, there IS an upper limit. 1,098,548,487,895,963 If any single cacher reaches that many hides, the world will explode.
  25. Yeah, seriously. there's WAY too much internet shorthand going around here. I'm half tempted to leave again! >.> Sorry, had to. (though internet shorthand IS a pet peeve of mine) CouchSurfing is a rather awesome idea. It's not something I personally partake in (although for San Diego International Comic Con this year I'm crashing on a relative strangers couch). I would have a hard time offering up my home to complete strangers (if I didn't live with my parents), but this is because I am a naturally distrusting sort of person. If you can trust people, or you just don't have much worth stealing, and you either live alone, or with others who are equally open minded, then it's a great thing. It lets you meet new and interesting people, and maybe feel good about helping someone. If for whatever reason CouchSurfing isn't your thing, at least be respectful to the OP. Consider that plenty of people fail to see the point in GeoCaching. How would you feel if someone was like "Yeah, sure. Let's just go tromping in the middle of the frelling woods looking for an ammo can filled with happy meal toys! Probably get bitten by thousands of bugs, and maybe a snake or two. That sounds like a GRAND day!"
