  1. Maybe this is useful? Ambient pressure is the pressure that the sensor is detecting. Barometric pressure is the calculated pressure for sea level based on your altitude. So at sea level the ambient pressure and Barometric pressure should read the same. Air pressure can change due to altitude changes or changes in the weather. As you change altitude both the Ambient and Barometric readings will to. If your altitude remains constant, but the GPS starts to show an elevation change it means the barometric pressure is changing, which can mean a change in the weather. This is by no means exact, but gives you a good idea: Over 30.20" Rising or steady- Continued fair Slowing falling- Fair Rapidly falling- Cloudy, Warmer 29.80" to 30.20" Rising or steady- Same as present Slowing falling- Little change Rapidly falling- Precipitation likely Under 29.80" Rising or steady- Clearing, cooler Slowing falling- Precipitation Rapid falling- Storm
  2. Try this. Turn the unit on and then hit the power so the backlight scale comes up. Use the stick to adjust the level to 25% and then click the stick. Now try using the power button to cycle through the backlight options.
  3. Either it was a bad GPS or somethings wrong with your cars power jack. I've used my car adapter on 14 hour drives and the gps doesn't even get warm. I would have it checked before trying it again. Have you had custom stero componets or other electrical work done?
  4. I've been using this one for almost a year now with my vista c. zip linq - link to amazon.com $3.99 + shipping.
  5. You only need Mapsource Topo if you want to load topo maps to your gps. Mapsource Topo will also let you download your tracks and print them, but the detail of the topo is pretty limited to contour lines. It will give you elevation profiles of your tracks. USAPhotoMaps is a shareware application that can do the same thing, although you need internet access to download the map images and they are really old, but it does both aerial and topo maps. You can also use Google Earthto display your tracks over more up too date aerial photos, but you need mapsource to download the data from the gps, unless you purchase the google earth plus (not sure it supports usb yet). Not all areas have high resolution maps. Delorme Topo USA is about $100 and can also display your tracks on a topo for you to print, but I've found that the maps are slightly off. They look really nice though. Also gives elevation profiles. I understand that National Geographics topo software is good, but I've never used it. There are other ones too.
  6. I had a eTrex legend that used to shut off all the time when it got even a little rough, but some foam in the battery compartment fixed the problem, unless it was a big hit. My Vista C doesn't have this problem, the batteries fit much tighter in it. I use the standard Garmin mount and a Lanyard is a really good idea. I spent 20 minutes looking for my vista C after smacking it with my knee at high speed and loosing sight of it in a trail lined with tall ferns, it was about a week old.
  7. I had the Garmin mount for a long time, but the suction cup finally broke off. I got a RAM mount for my eTrex Vista C for Christmas. It's built really solid, but it is quite a bit bigger. It's not so big that it interferes with my view. The suction cup alone is double the size of the Garmin. I can see how you could damage the rubber on the side of the eTrex, but from the picture of the one for the 60c, it doesn't look like you would have that problem. Even on the aluminum one, only the arm and balls are aluminum. The suction cup piece is plastic and the cradle is plastic. If the plastic arm is the same quality as the other plastic parts than I don't think it would matter which one you get. The Garmin on was good, but it would pop off if it got hotter than when I stuck it to the window. It has a locking mechanism, but it's not that strong. The way the RAM mount suction cup works it picked up the glass top to my coffee table. It's powerful. I don't think you'll go wrong with either one. I've only had the RAM mount for a little while, but I think it will last longer. If something breaks on the ram you can buy just that part, but if the Garmin breaks you need to buy a whole new one and you can buy other parts for the RAM to mount cameras and other devices. I hope this helped.
  8. My firest GPS was a Etrex Legend, which I had for about 3-4 years. Last year I upgraded to an Etrex Vista C. The color screen is so bright and so much easier to read. In my opinion the C seems to get a lot better reception. The added memory is a bonus, especially if you do get City Select to use the auto route, which is really nice. It makes your GPS that much more valuable. I liked my Legend, but I love my Vista C.
  9. Go to Garmin's product page and use the mapsource map viewer on the right hand side. Select City Select and zoom in to see the street detail you will get. http://www.garmin.com/cartography/ontheRoad/ Make sure your unit is compatible, has auto route capability, and should have at least 24mb. Otherwise it won't be much use unless you carry a laptop around with you.
  10. You are missing out on the best features of your Legend C, auto route. I have the Etrex Vista C, which is pretty much the same with the addition of the altimeter and compass. The 24mb does hold quite a bit of road detail, but with both CS and Topo it will fill it up fast, depending on how developed an area is. The auto route that City Select gives you excellent and really handy for traveling, not to mention all the POI data. As it was stated before it will auto correct if you make a wrong turn and give you new directions. I take it with me on business trips all the time and just load the area I'm traveling to, but Even at home it comes in really handy finding the closest place to eat or looking up the phone number of a local store, which the POI will give you. I can't tell you how many times I got lost using paper directions I've printed out and once you make one wrong turn the directions don't help much at all. You'll save time by not wondering around and can change your travel plans by auto route to another location at any time. You won't regret it. It will make your Etrex C that much more valuable to you.
  11. Is this what you are looking for? Point your web capable phone to: http://wap.geocaching.com/
  12. I figured I check on the way home and I picked it up. I'm in Pittsburgh,PA and I had full strength , but it was showing it was SE from me and on the outer ring, which is supposed to be the horizon on my Vista C. Probably won't be any use to those in the mid west and west coast.
  13. I had a Legend and used it only for tracklogging while mountain biking. I now have a Vista C and I rarely leave home with out it. I use it for: Autorouting Tracklogging Giving directions to other people. Looking up phone numbers via the POI's
  14. Well, a quick email to support and the problem was solved. I don't know how but clearing out some registry settings and reloading my gps solved the problem. here's what they sent me. "What I would like to have you try is removing the MapSource settings from the Windows registry. It is possible that this issue could be due to a setting that is set in the Windows registry. Below are some steps you can follow to remove these settings: 1) Close out of MapSource 2) Click on your Start button 3) Click on the Run option 4) Delete anything in the small white box, then type in "regedit" - without the quotes and then click the OK button 5) On the left hand side you should have a folder called HKEY_CURRENT_USER, click the + next to this 6) You should then have a Software folder, click the + next to this 7) You should then have a Garmin folder, click the + next to this 8) You should then have a MapSource folder, click the + next to this 9) You should then have a Settings folder, right click on this folder and then left click on the Delete option, say Yes or OK when asked if you are sure. 10) Close out of the Registry Editor"
  15. Just a warning..... It looks to me like the latest release has that routing bug that the beta had at first, which made my vacation drive from PA to SC interesting. I loaded the update, reloaded my Vista C and checked a local route. even with the route set to "faster time" it put me on slow back roads. Instead of the normal highway route. nroute still gets it right though. I'm contacting support now.
  16. From CNN:CNN link CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (AP) -- A Boeing Delta 2 lifted off from its seaside pad shortly before midnight Sunday, carrying into space the first of a new generation of Global Positioning System satellites. The dramatic night launch was a positive milestone for the mission, which had been delayed multiple times over the past six months by technical issues. The rocket created a halo effect as it passed through thin, low clouds. The Lockheed Martin-built satellite, dubbed GPS IIR-M, is the first in a series of eight new spacecraft designed to provide stronger signal strength, better protection against jamming and additional signals for both military and civilian users. The mission comes on the heels of the 10th anniversary of the GPS constellation becoming fully operational in April 1995. The system includes 24 operating satellites as well as a number of spares in orbit. One of the biggest benefits to nonmilitary users is the addition of a second civilian signal, said Air Force Col. Allan Ballenger, who oversees the GPS Program Office. "I think this, it's a pretty huge step," he said. "The military has been using two frequencies from day one of GPS. This will be first time that we are adding a second frequency for civilian users." The second signal will provide more accuracy by compensating for ionic interference in the atmosphere. But civilians will not be able to reap all the benefits of the new system until more of the new satellites are in orbit, Ballenger said.
  17. Another vote for the C, The auto-routing works great. automatic route correction, it has sounds (beeps, not voice), the 24mb holds plenty.
  18. I'm still using the one I got from amazon.com. I never checked the voltage on it, but I haven't had a problem. I've been using it a lot for a month. Several long (4+ hour) trips and have had no issues. If I get a chance I try to check the output. USB power adapter.
  19. What do you mean by that statement? Do you have Garmin's City Select software? It's what you'll need to make the routing work. It sounds like you just have the standard basemaps that come with the unit.
  20. Another alternative to paper and a PDA is a phone with WAP capability. wap.geocaching.com It works pretty well when you are out and about.
  21. I picked up one of these zip-linq usb power adapters for my Etrex Vista C. It workes great. Saves batteries when I traveling in the car. Less than $10 with shipping from www.amazon.com
  22. Hi,. I'm a mountain biker and have been using the Garmin mount for a couple of years and my friend has one too. They take up very little space on the bars and hold the unit very well. Very similar to the way a bike computer mounts. Even when hitting some really rough stuff, the unit won't pop out. I would recommend using a cord or something to keep it from hitting the road if it does. It gets good reception because it out in front of your body for the most part. I've hit mine with my knee a few times during crashes and my gps has popped out, but didn't break the mount. It's a simple design that works well.
  23. If you use the garmin mapsourse products; City Select = a small portion of Long Island into the 8mg, about 1/4 of it. Topo = all of long Island and a nice chunk of NY. City Select has street addresses, gas stations, resturants, shopping and lots of other POIs. You cannont select which ones you want to download and which ones you don't Topo - doesn't have side street names. You can't search by address and about the only POI data you get are schools, cemetaries, and a few others. It's the POI data that takes up all the memory and with mapsource there isn't an option not to download them. 24. GPS city advertise a ram mount specifically for Etrex Color units. Etrex Color Cradle. And. Ram has it listed on their site. Ram etrex color cradle. Which is a different part number from the normal one. Ram etrex cradle
  25. About cigarette lighter power, since the unit comes with a usb data cable, then one of these cigarette lighter usb adapters should work fine to provide power. They are only about $4. Amazon.com Cigarette usb adapter
