I can rework my formulas based on that list - I think the 10km radius is still a good yardstick, especially as that give us 314 square KM to work within for caches With those new numbers it would break down the larger centers (i.e. breaking Mississauga out of the Toronto CMA) Give me some time ... You're looking at two different lists and interpreting them as the same.. Caches per person list is population based, however this is skewed to a small town with 11k people and one active cacher who hides 60 caches makes a very high caches:person ratio The second large list I posted based on saturation actually works in tandem with Keith's list, the saturation level of an area takes into consideration the amount of caches a given area holds, and weights it so that smaller centers which may have a higher cache:person ratio are placed lower on the list vs. places which have larger overall numbers Take a look at the google cache maps on gc.com at the top 10 saturated places on the big list, you trip over caches in all those places On a side note, Never thought something I did for fun would appear so confusing and "useless" to some people - next time I do something I think would be interesting for others to see I'll keep it at my local association's forum rather then sharing it and apparently needing to constantly justify all the work it did....

AGAIN - this was done ACROSS THE COUNRTY, every CMA is effected by the same principles Montreal Numbers include all these: http://www12.statcan.ca/english/census06/d...R=0&CMA=462 Vancouver ones include: http://www12.statcan.ca/english/census06/d...R=0&CMA=933 what it means is that the center core of the CMA of Toronto is not saturated with caches, the point is, Toronto CMA may have a lot of caches, and maybe more then some other centers, but they are spread out over too wide an area to be considered saturated - let me put it to you another way If you use the google map feature on the center of Toronto and pan out a little, between Mississauga, Scarb & Vaughn specifically, then are less then 500 caches - Now try that with Ottawa or Victoria - the cache/map system will tap out before you get to the 5km level Regardless of that, and even if I used 2mil population, Toronto is nowhere near the other areas in canada for saturation, there are just not enough placed caches to count, even if I increase the radius of 10km Saturation is being able to head to an area, and potentially pick up over 150 caches in one day without flinching - KNOWING that most would be boring drive-bys

As I mentioned in the last post with the saturation numbers, This says nothing about quality caches, It just tells you where to go to pick up some serious numbers... I did this for my own curiosity and for those who like stats - My curiosity is satisfied, thus at least ONE person was "enlightened" by it...

I could have enlarged the limits for Census metropolitan areas (CMAs) (like Toronto, Vancouver and Ottawa), and kept the census agglomerations separate, however that would be another undertaking all together... something for next month maybe - It would require recentering all CMAs to a rough center to ensure maximum coverage, however some centers would not rise up too much in the "standings" due to population density anywho...

Answering people: res2100: Yes, The census numbers I used are from the Census metropolitan areas and census agglomerations http://www12.statcan.ca/english/census06/d...GK=1&RPP=50 Thus giving me numbers from split towns/cities - thus giving for example Toronto 5mil+ - However I kept the 10km limit for consistancy - Center of downtown is starting point POWRcacher: That was a typo

Actually, the center point of halifax I took was close to the bridges, thus Dartmouth is included - The census counts HRM, not Halifax... no disadvantage Moncton is surrounded by 50% swamp, not woods (immediately north and south of Moncton are woods) Fredericton is surrounded by woods But as the stats show, Moncton is the most saturated place in Canada - not by much, only a 3% variance from Moncton to Freddy - Oddly, Hali & Sydney both rank almost the same for saturation coverage only at about a 6% variance off Freddy Stats don't lie.. they just tell their own story

Yes, the numbers are indicating people per cache as opposed to caches per person, but as either calculation will bring the same results in terms of ordering, and it's much neater to show a whole number vs. 0.0009133 is it not? "Per capita" is a fairly generic term - it was done this way to make it easier to read

Ok - so this is now the final version with my new formulas and so forth Background on the stats Population numbers and locations are from 2006 Census Cache numbers are based from the center of the city/town up to 9.9km .. 10km+ are not included in the count, and before you ask, having even as many as 10 caches on the "limit" will not change the numbers so drastically that your city/town will score better - you want your city/town to score better, place more caches There are an obscene number of caches on the East Coast of Canada and very little population - side note, there are like 6 or 7 of the top 10 hiders in Canada in the Maritime provinces (I am one of them) - this is why. If a missed a town with over 10k consult the census webpage, if it was not there - I did not use it My final formula for overall saturation is based on caches per capita, overall caches, overall population and some other factors to even the playing field for large population vs. small pops, etc, etc..

I've been looking at the numbers all day since I finished the stats, and something was bugging me - then I figured it out - I forgot to include overall city population into the final formula for measuring saturation level - so I fixed it, it changed ALL the numbers around so I will close this topic and start a new one with the corrected numbers... I will also post the full list twice - once ordered by caches per capita, and again by overall saturation

Yes you are correct, however the final list is not based only on caches per capita, there are other factors involved Are you sure? By your numbers, Cranbrook (118.9) has a lower ppl/cache ratio than Fredericton (216.9).

St. Catharines - Niagara ON 390,317 211 1849.843602 because the 2006 census site includes the two areas together, I did as well As such, I picked a spot between the two regions to get a center point I found 221 within 10Km. of a random cache in St. Catharines. Population 131,000, a little under 600 ppl/cache.

ahhh no, it's not weighted to the east, its a simple matter of stats... there are a lot of hiders in cities on the east coast with less then 200k population... stats they don't lie - your stats for Barrie are off Barrie ON 177,061 158 1120.639241 from downtown, only caches under 10km are counted (up to 9.9km are included) Pop numbers and locations are from the 2006 census website HOWEVER - I made some errors in the most saturated lists, which I will correct now -=-=-=-=-=-

If you're holding the micro in your hands, have no writing implements, are you going to run around to find one? The point is to find what is hidden, logging a single name on a sheet is silly when the main logs are done online for the most part... here at least.. especially when there are killer skiters trying to carry you away into the swamps In any event, I'm done with this thread and heading back to the MGA... Dude, you DON'T want to get into a flame war here with me.. I'm being nice on the MGA boards, here I'll rip you to shreads without caring about it... If you truely feel like going up against me, you're more of a special case then I took you for... and that's special in a short bus kind of way... any time you want to start compairing caches head to head, I'll welcome your challenge... especially then less then 30% of my total caches are micros, and even those micros are in better locations then the majority of yours.. spread around the province to intesting and unique locations... And they ALWAYS have a pencil at the least unless the container is too small to hold one, in which case I mantion it is too small.... you hide 35mm cotnainers with no pencils on a regular basis. And for the record, no micros of mine have been hidden in swamps.... in fact if you read your logs online, you'll see others questioning why you have so dubbed those caches in my name.... You have 35 listed micros out of 63 caches, which is over 50%... You want to compare ANY of your caches vs the best of mine you're welcome to, just remember you're the one spilling this over into these forums.. The point is, I know Dragoon (The person whos logs he has been deleting) has been to every location he has said to...

Then why even bother with the online log? If the cache is so lame that the person refused to sign the paper log, it stands to reason that its too lame to log online. because it gets it off their lists....

It's great you all are supporting "Misha" when none of you know the whole story.. and I find it funny he would bring it to the main public forums to try and gain support for his loosing battle in his local association. Nor do you all know the exact issue which this particular incident has occured, Nor do you all know this Misha character like we all do... or his caches. Some being swamp ridden micros in the middle of heavy woods which he places and "blames" on other cachers (and that's just my opinion) it's geocaching, not geologging - you find the cache to find what is hidden, not to sign a log inside Nuff said

Exactly... but I do remember that plans were originally made to do something here... but we were left in the dark as to the reasons behind it, or how we could help to try and bring things to fruition... And Thanks for the compliment... I try hard to keep things light ;-)

I didn't see this gone over. I don't understand what the problem is with the Waymarking site. Does it have bad programming, or popup ads, or viruses, or what? It's run by the same people (Groundspeak) as the geocaching site, so there shouldn't be any territorial issues. What's the problem with it? I certainly see the disappointment issue with the Canadian benchmarks not being 'pre-loaded' - it makes logging more difficult. Apparently Groundspeak did the parsing of the US benchmarks database but don't want to do that kind of excercise again for whatever reason. I don't live near Canada, but I do wish those databases could be incorporated by Groundspeak. Canadian Benchmarking issue has been gone over... many times... much moreso then now.. however .... if suddenly the gc.com benchmark site "broke" and was unrecoverable, would you accept them simply throwing it (us benchmarks) onto Waymarking? Completely blank, in EXACTLY the format the Canadian ones are displayed? I think not. I've been very vocal in my little corner of the world about Waymarking... and I need not get into at this point my issues with that particuar site.. other then it's a lesser site in terms of content... it's not gc.com.. I understood the ban on virtuals and locationless as it was getting"out of hand" and Waymarking was born out of this to apease those individuals. I've seen parts of the Canadian DB.. it can be parsed as well.. point in fact was there was some "issues" with it (groundsspeek and the gov of Canada or the geodec branch or something) which was never really brought to light exactly WHAT the issue was... something which would explain why the Canadian benchmarks (which are just as old as the american ones in many cases) were not added to the site.

heh... both actually.... I understand WHY Waymarking was created, and for those that like it... they like it a lot... I am not one of those.... and seeing the US system online in the way it is (which is good) and knowing the Canadian system is free and open makes me wonder why it was never implemented... This has been gone over for some time... Waymarking for Canadian benchmarks is is not a viable solution to the US Benchmarking system which is currently implemented on gc.com (which is what I wish we had in Canada)
