  1. Hi GeoWomyn_SF_CA, Do not dispare, yet. I had the same problem with my 60C today. I wrote to Garmin and no answer came, so I took these steps by myself and I got it updated and it works fine. It may be too late to back-up any of your data in your unit, such as waypoints, tracks, routes. I always back-up my data before a firmware update so I'm OK, this time. First, re-boot your computer, and don't have any other applications running. Turn OFF any screensavers, too. With your unit turned OFF, hold the PAGE and ENTER button down while doing a POWER-ON. This will prompt you to do a full re-set. Say OK, or Yes. Next, connect your unit with the USB cable. Find the "Updater.exe" where you saved it, and double-click. The Updater will do its thing and you will see a progress window, saying it is erasing the old version of firmware, followed by it indicating it is updating to version 3.70. It takes a few minutes. At least worked for me. In my case I think my update was interupted by an incoming email notification. That's when my problem hit, as I saw the message flash. Good luck, and let me know if this worked for you? -Timpat Dear TimPat, Thank you for trying to help me. I was so hopeful but when I followed your steps (PAGE + ENTER while powering on) my GPS let out a big wail and said "software missing." Or maybe that was me wailing. I had rebooted my computer, I dont have any screen savers and I turned off my virus protection program. It is interesting to know that the first time I was downloading the s/w, installed it and lost everything my phone rang. So I wonder if someone was trying to call me while I was downloading the s/w off the Garmin site. I am open to anymore ideas !
  2. Garmin sent me the email to update my unit with this heading: GPSMAP 60CS Ver. 3.70 as of March 18, 2005 Download. I downloaded the three files and then clicked on the Updater. Now my unit does not work and the screen says I have no software!!!! What I do now ??? Ugh!!!
  3. Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I decided to go with a Palm One Zire 31, which does not have a transflective screen. Since money was a concern and I did want a color screen and a fast processor, I went with this model. I tried it in the full sun and if I make a canopy with the cover and the case I can improve the visibility of the screen. I can not see it as well as I hoped for but it is still quite readable. The image shown here does not capture what the screen really looks like but it does show you how I shield it from the sun. As a last resort I will definitely throw an “economical” towel over my head.
  4. Hi All, I am about to buy a PDA but my deciding factor will be which one can I read outdoors in bright sunlight? I am thinking of a PalmIIIxe, a Palm 515, or a PalmOne Zire 31. Any suggestions? Thanks!
  5. Well, I just went to Ardenwood today and all my caches are still there! The only thing (person) I could not find was the supervisor... SO..the cache series will remain there until I am informed to do otherwise.
  6. OK. I called Garmin again. This time I got a different person. He said the problem was I was using MetroGuide V5 as my mapping software when I should be using CitySelect. He said the GPS was only reading the baseline map. Funny, I thought this GPS autorouter worked the first week I had this GPS. Maybe I imagined it. Anyways, I am off to buy CitySelect. When I finally get that s/w and load it I will report back.
  7. I have exactly the same problem with my 60CS. Even if I tell my GPS I want to travel 3 blocks to the park it will only take me to the highway and only the highway. I have set MapSource *and* my GPS to "bicycle." I have the latest MapSource and GPS s/w. Both of them are checkmarked to autoroute as well. I tried the Master Reset with Page and Enter. Still no change. I called Garmin support. The tech re-created a route just like mine on his computer and GPS. Lo and behold, he had the same problem with his unit!! He did say however his other one worked but he loaned it to a co-worker. He gave me a few suggestions like downloading the beta s/w for my unit. I did that and it still does not autoroute properly. This is very frustrating. I am calling them tomorrow again. Maybe I will get another person. If anyone solves this problem, please post here! (The first week I had this GPS it worked properly by the way.)
  8. I wonder what is the record for a cache that vanishes right after approval. One of my caches disappeared overnight and it was under a wall in a scary hole with bark on top of it!! Me thinks some muggle saw me plant it.
  9. A ranger told me since there is no poison oak here, there are no deer. And since there are no deer, there are no mountain lions, and if you believe that.....you can finish my sentence for me. Heh. (PS: Yesterday I encountered a flock of turkeys near the activity center (the bird that is, not people )
  10. Hi Everyone, I checked on Touch the Twilight this afternoon just to make sure nothing had been muggled. The activity center and cache are fine. In fact, the cache seemed fuller than I remember it! (I think a geo-angel came by!) I replaced two fire tacks but that is all I had to do. Everything is set to go for tomorrow (Oct 16, 7PM, Mission Peak parking lot). If you come before sunset tomorrow you will have a much easier time finding the very first point. There are also two caches below this one. If you have not found them yet try Eucalyptustream (GCJ5BV) and Assume Nothing #2 (GCJE54). I will be on the premises but not necessarily at the cache depending on who shows up. If many people show up I would suggest cachers organize themselves into groups. If a few people show up I will go with the group. If you feel at all nervous I will give you my cell phone if you contact me through my geocaching email. Also, if Walruz or Marky come they know how the cache works as well. See you at 7 or earlier, be safe, be warm and have fun! PS: The air quality is fine today; it wasn't so great yesterday.
  11. Hello Everyone, We have set a date for this night cache. If you ever wanted to visit Touch the Twilight cache but didn’t want to tackle it alone, here is your chance. A group of us are meeting in the parking lot at Mission Peak Regional Park in Fremont, California. Date: October 16th (Saturday) Time: 7PM Meeting Place: Parking lot at Mission Peak (see cache page for parking information) Bring: GPS, headlight or flashlight, hiking boots, compass, an angle mirror if you don’t think you are very good at touching. Heh. I have no idea what the weather will be like but bring layers in case it’s chilly. See you there! GeoWomyn_SF_CA
  12. How about Trifecta GCK9NA ? This is at the top of Mission Peak (Fremont.) It's a fairly new cache and not too many people have been up there yet. If you like challenges Jeremy, try that one. It definately has height.
  13. Anyone know what happened to Buxleys waypoints? It hasn't worked for days.
  14. Hi All, Hopefully this Friday night or next Friday night my next geocache game- series will be approved called "Inca Gold." This one is six caches total and involves searching for artifacts or clues. Each cache counts as a point. When approved you can check Inca Gold I don't think this series is any harder than Ardenwood Scrabble or the Indian Montage series but there is some climbing uphill. Bring water! Series takes place at Mission Peak Regional Park in Fremont. I tried to keep the caches at the lower elevations but there wasn't enough room ! A couple are a little "above". Enjoy, GeoWomyn_SF_CA
  15. Good idea! I "think" I could do that. The only thing is... I now have the heebee-gheebies. This week-end I encountered my first snake I found it at Bleh Blob Blech. Blob. Blob. Yesterday I spent the afternoon planting my next series of caches at Mission Peak. *Why* is it wherever there is a good spot for a cache, there is a good spot for a snake? I actually encountered another snake but this time I didn't poke it by accident! *shiver*
  16. Howdy Folks, I hardly post but something unusual has happened. Somebody left a poor idea of a joke in my cache called "Why?" I am not familiar with the "herb" but I did recognize the reefer papers. It could be this dried plant is from a nearby tree but even so, this kind of joke is a bad idea. I am astonished muggles found this. Even more curious, I found a rusty shovel nearby that I had not seen before. (I have no idea what thats about) In the meantime, I am thinking I should shut the cache site down and move it to an entirely new location six miles away. Can I change the coords, or should I resubmit for a new approval? By the way, I left a Jeep TB there last night but I may move this cache by 5:00 today. Cheers, GeoWomyn_SF_CA PS: "Why" oh "Why?" do people do this ?
  17. Oh happy days the Cache Pen TB has been found! I hiked up to Runner's Edge (Clayton, Callifornia) with the "Ladies of the Rope Guild," a newly formed women's group whose mission is to rescue lonely travel bugs. Ever since I saw LindaLu's post in this forum asking for someone to look for her travel bug (the Cache Pen) it remained on my mind. So two months ago I began to gather and plan an expedition to the top of Olympic mountain. BykeNut, HykeNut, ahahaHAHAahaha(that is supposed to be the sound of a quail but it is a cache name as well--Heh), and Ronka agreed to give it a go. Rundex, the cache owner, also supplied me with all the details I needed to find her cache just to make extra sure we found it. After a two hour climb (we didn't even need to use our picks, ropes or oxygen masks) we made it to the site. The final single track leading to the cache was an interesting one, and at the end we were treated to wonderful views of the bay area. We found the cache in excellent shape and THE CACHE PEN!! Poor thing has been stranded here more than a year. I am happy to report it is in excellent shape. You can read about the Cache Pen TB at: Cache Pen TB or the cache page at Runner's Edge Runner's Edge I included photos as well. Happy Trails, GeoWomyn_SF_CA
  18. Help is on the way. Tomorrow (June 19, 2004) my posse and I (four women) are going to climb Mt. Diablo just to search for this lonely TB ! We have our hard hats, pick axes, ropes, foot cleats, goggles, and a film crew ready to go. Stay tuned for a report upon our return. There's nothing like a TB in distress that gets me out on the trail!
  19. Congratulations to BykeNut for reaching 1000 caches!
  20. I started with scrapping but now I have moved onto "altered books." I plan on making them caches soon.
  21. Thanks for your replies! I guess this feature was just down. I found my images.
  22. Greetings Cache Hiders, Does anyone know where that page is that shows all the images that an owner has uploaded? I do not mean the gallery, but the page that lists all the images you have uploaded to the page of a cache you have hidden. These images are the ones that "decorate" the page. As an example, this cache of mine shows a "decorative image." http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...d5-d396c69661b2 (BTW, I know all the pros and cons about decorative pages, but that's not what I asking about here ) Back to the subject at hand: say you have uploaded an image to make a background. In the "old days" this image was stored in "my account" page." You could right click on the image stored there and find the path to where it was kept and then use that information in the HTML code of your page. Since the geocache site was improved about a month ago, I have not been able to find the list where all my background images are stored. Where could it be? Thanks for your help! -GeoWomyn_SF_CA San Francisco Bay Area
  23. Hi Geocachers, Well looks like the "Ardenwood Scrabble" cache series will be released tonight :-) (I have been in contact with the approver concerning EBRP issues.) And I just came back from the site to make sure no trees had fallen or lakes had appeared where they shouldn't be due to the recent storms. Also, I checked that all the caches are still intact and dry. They are. All six caches are inside Ardenwood Park (Fremont, CA) with a bonus seventh cache. Looks like no rain in the forcast for tomorrow so if you aren't doing anything come on out! Gates open at 10am. Terrain is flat and suitable for kids. No bushwacking necessary. Caches are an assortment of containers and sizes with one interesting camo. Hints, when provided, are intentionally a bit vague. I will upgrade them in a day or so. Coords will not be on target either. I tried my best to average them out. I took 3 readings for each cache on rainy and clear days. Oye, what a struggle. :-/ When you get to a cache called "Ardenwood: Lost in Time," check out the hundreds of goats and their babies back there! I know they are being hired out as lawnmowers. Heh. Cheers and long live the caches in EBRP! GeoWomyn_SF_CA PS: Lots of stuff to photograph out here.
  24. Hi Everyone, Well my caches did NOT go through for Saturday. It appears there is a controversy about caches being planted in East Bay parks. We are hoping to release them next Saturday though. (Feb 28) Please see the topic in the forums here: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=65192 Regards, GeoWomyn_SF_CA
  25. Hello Everyone, Just a heads up I am aiming to release seven caches on Friday night. Six of the caches are related to finding the seventh but you get to log a find for each one you discover. The series is called "Ardenwood Scrabble"...maybe I should have called it "Ardenwood Scramble". Heh. All seven will be located at Ardenwood Farm in Fremont, California. Terrain is dead flat. There will be 2-3 miles of hiking involved. Gates will be open on SATURDAY at 10am. But one of the best things to look forward to are the five baby lambs that were born on Jan 30th! Also, the blossoms are in bloom. Bring the kids! This area is very pretty I will be on the premises at 10am (when the gates open-and you can't sneak in there!). I will be wearing a black hat if you see me. I will also be taking pictures. Happy Trails, GeoWomyn_SF_CA
