  1. That is a pretty good idea, to put a TB in the cache. I was also kind of thinking about doing that, as I was going to place an order for some other items soon anyway, I may as well just add a pack of TB's to my order.
  2. Ok, a few weeks ago I had this idea. What if I put a 35mm camera and an extra roll of film inside my next cache hide, and attached it to a note that stated that I wanted it to be taken by somebody, but before they removed it, take a picture of themselves, and or their caching group, and placed in their next find/hide, and then the same thing happen in each subsequent cache, kinda like a TB or GeoCoin, but instead of tracking it on the GC.com page, each person that comes in contact with the camera would e-mail me with the cache location of where they found the camera, and the current cache the camera is in, and then that would be posted on GC.com, or the Groundspeak forums, so everybody could see where the camera has gone and been. Then, when both rolls of film were done, the person in possesion of the camera would then either e-mail me the pictures, or put new film in, and continue the "Geo-Cam" tradition, or send the un-developed film, and camera back to me through the mail, and I would develop the pics, and post them on GC.com, and put new film in the camera, and re-hiding it. Thus re-starting the cycle. I would also put a small log that would travel with the camera for people to sign comments about the picture they took, and then have them also sign an online log for the camera. I was just wondering, this probably has already been done, but I was just wondering if it has for sure. This is something I was planning on doing in the near future, so if it hasn't been done, I would want to know if anybody had any extra ideas to throw into the hat for this "Geo-Cam" idea. I figured this would be a cool social experiment, especially if someone from another country were to find the cam, and bring it back home with them, and circulate it through that country. Thank You
  3. No, not yet, but I have gotten suspicious looks from Police when I was looking for some urban Caches. I now carry the brochure, and folding card just in case, as well as my school I.D., in case a LEO or police officer asks for some I.D. I find that this is a good type of I.D. to carry because it not only has my picture, but the school's name, adress, my grade and student I.D. number as well, which is good in case they have to check the validity, because the I.D. number can be traced through the district to prove residency, age e.t.c.
  4. I wouldn't have a problem with it as long as you didn't give your wife extra hints or info about the cache.
  5. It's a good idea, but i'd have to disagree. As "The Leprechauns" say, "I'd rather find some wet tupperware and rusty altoids tins." The point of Geocaching is to get out into nature. That's what sets us apart from everyone else. At my High School, I am one of a dying breed, nature lovers. Many kids don't know what the world is like beyond the couch and T.V. in their living room. As far as I know I am the only Cacher at my school. I have gotten a few of my friends interested, but mostly they just tag along with me when I go Caching. Sitting in front of your computer playing a game is not what Geocaching is about. Geocaching is about hiking three miles into the woods, through water, mud, and overgrown trails to some amazing spot with a breathtaking view, then hiking three miles back out of the woods, with the satisfaction of a found Cache. By creating an online game, you would be making Geocaching just another MMORPG. No offense, but I love this sport for what what it is, I don't think Geocaching should be an online game. 6. Hi Again, now I need to know how to update my firmware.
  7. Hey Everybody, I was just wondering how to turn WAAS on on my new Magellan eXplorist 500le. I also want to know how to manually enter coordinates (if possible). Thanks
  8. Oh, and I did e-mail the moderator asking for a thread name change.
  9. I got home early today, and took my 500le caching. It was great. I had to do some extra looking because of the dense tree cover where the caches were hidden, but all in all, my Maggie was better than the Garmin eTrex that I had before this one. My old Garmin (R.I.P, died after 4yrs of faithful service) was always over or undershooting caches by 100-230yds (1ft=3yds), so do the math. My Maggie was only off by 46ft and I am finding caches much easier with Maggie than I am with my old Garmin. By the way, all you New Jersey cachers, be prepared for my first hidden cache "Tennis Anyone" hidden in Bloomfield, NJ's beautiful Brookdale Park. It should be published in a little while, as I just updated the coordinates.
  10. Hey, NikkiPoooo, Don't worry, you'll love the 500le, like I said my rant was me on caffeine. It's a great unit for a great price.
  11. Hey Packanack, Thanks for the help, i'll keep in touch, maybe we can go caching sometime. I go through Wayne a lot, and there are not many caches by me. Also take a look at my second post. I was just tired of playing with the unit, and needed a chance to rest. When I get home today, I am going to go caching, so I will have a chance to really test the unit out. Thanks for your help.
  12. I really don't hate the 500le, or Magellan, I am just aggrevated with them because I had to stay up till 3am (yes, that was my fault, I know) to make it work. Now that it's working, my Maggie is a pretty good system, I just have to get used to the interface. I think with some small improvements, like battery life, Magellan could have an amazing unit. My previous rant was just me on loads of caffeine, and four hours of sleep. I also believe that I exaggerated by saying that I would never buy from Magellan again, because I just bought a RoadMate for my car, and I LOVE IT. The only bad thing is that it just beeps when it wants you to turn, but I think if I play with it a bit, I can fix that. I'm sorry if I offended any Maggie users, and i'm looking forward to sharing helpful tips and info with other 500le users. Happy Hunting
  13. I recently bought a new Magellan eXplorist 500le and I hate it. I really should have done more research before buying, and if I did I probably would have bought Garmin, Lowrance, or another brand, just not Magellan. I haven't even had my 500le for 12hrs, and I already hate it. I loaded the software into my desktop, and it didn't work, not to mention the trouble MapSend gave me. Next, I tried my laptop, eventually after upwards of 200 tries, I finally got the software working. Now it was time to connect my reciver, and download GC POI's. My first few attempts were unsuccesful (I chalked that one up to my error, and learning how to use the system). However, try, and try again I could not get a GC POI to load. On try 1,532 (yes I counted) I got my first POI loaded. After that, I have to admit, it was pretty easy to load GC POI's into the system. I like the GC Manager that came with Magellan, but it doesn't work on my desktop, which is weird because my desktop is more powerful than my laptop, and it worked on my laptop. Once I got it up and running, it was pretty easy to work with, but getting it there was a pain. Hey Magellan, what's with the weird battery pack? It took me like 15 minutes just to get it in. The maps are alright, but I don't think that i'm going to spring the extra 150 bucks for the topo maps just yet. The real test comes today when I take it out GCing. Well Magellan, you've just lost another customer to Garmin, because I am not buying from Magellan ever again.
  14. I named my new Magellan eXplorist 500le (which sucks, should have done more research before buying ), Dudley, because it's a dud, and it doesn't work the way I want it to, but I was thinking about naming it Brick, because that's basically what it is, a brick with a screen and controls, that cost me $120.00. MAGELLAN STINKS: GO GARMIN!!!!!
  15. Thanks, I was wondering about that, I think my GPSr was malfunctioning, as it was my old one, and it was about to kick the bucket, so it may have been off. I ordered a new GPSr and it will be here tomorrow, or Thursday, so i'll get a new reading and fix it then. Thanks again for taking a look at it.
  16. I posted a new geocache about three days ago, and it still has not been published, how long does it usually take for a cache to be published.
  17. I first found out about this amazing sport from a site called baristanet.com, it talks about local news for my area, and one of the articles happened to be on Geocaching, I went out the same day and bought my first handheld GPSr.

  19. Thanks for the help guys, i'm surfing the NNJC website right now. Still, if anyone is interested in starting another club, let me know as I am still interested in starting a club for Bloomfield area cachers.

  21. Hey everybody, I was wondering if there was a club for Geocaching enthusiasts in the Bloomfield, Montclair, Glen Ridge, Nutley area. I was thinking about starting one, but I didn't know if there was already a club in my area. If there is please let me know, as I am interested in joining, if there is not, and you live in any of Bloomfield's surrounding towns, and have interest in joining/creating a Geocaching club, post back and let me know. Thank You
  22. Thanks, this helped a lot, I did buy the 500le, and it's in the mail on the way to my house. I plan on buying the topo maps, how much did you pay for them??
  23. Hi, I was just wondering if the Magellan eXplorist 500le is a good unit for geocaching. I used to own the Garmin eTrex, but it didn't live up to my expectations. Thank You.
