  1. 3crosses: You didn't have to copy mine exactly!
  2. Here's a another pic of the inside with some component information. And here's the article that goes along with it.
  3. Yes, you can get creative using html. See my profile as an example and randomly click on other profiles to get an idea of what you can do.
  4. You already have GpxSonar installed on your ppc, all you have to do now is transfer your .gpx file to your ppc and open it in GpxSonar.
  5. Well, the membership has grown by 237 since my post last night at 9:11est How's that for growth!
  6. Well, if your using IE and you have the status bar at the bottom of the browser (click "view" and select "status bar") just hover your mouse pointer over anyones user ID in the forums and you will see the link with the number at the end. This works on your own as well. But you can view your own profile. From the GC.com main page, click "my cache page", login if not already, and click the "stats" image. But it won't have the number in the url. Another way is to click on someone else's user ID and then just change the number in the url. If you want to know who was number 100, just change it to that number and refresh the page.
  7. It's the last number in the url of everyones profile page. You are number 30,196 as you see here in the link to your profile. http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?id=30196
  8. Well, now you gave me a reason to actually have a signature so I just made mine up.
  9. You can download all the USGS DRGs (digital raster graphics) for Idaho you want for free from here. You'll need something like WinZip to extract them from the downloaded file. There's a free viewer here you can use but your best option for working with these topo's is Oziiexplorer. And if you want the ultimate setup, get yourself a pocket pc and the CE version of Oziexplorer and take the topo's with you. Here's Ozi on the PPC.
  10. Actually, your number 8,480 (unless of course, you changed your user ID). Jeremy is number 3. I logged in in December of 2000 and am number 1,413. We are now up to 331,282. The growth of this "sport" is incredible.
  11. Yes, WAAS is used for corrections, I didn't mean to imply that it wasn't. WAAS sats also send a GPS ranging code that CAN be used in determining position along with the GPS sat's. Our position is determined by computing our distance (range) from the sat's. Do our receivers use the ranging code from the WAAS sat's? Nobody really seems to know. If they do, it would be nice to be able to just use the WAAS sat's for that ONLY and not use the corrections. High end units allow you to do this. Sorry for the confusion. I was trying to say that our low end units don't use the WAAS sat's ranging signal as part of the position fix but in fact we really don't know if they do or not.
  12. The waas satellites are not part of the GPS constellation and play no part in the position fix other than to provide corrections. To elaborate, the WAAS sats DO provide a GPS ranging code that CAN be used by GPS receivers that have the ability to use them. whether or not our low end units do this or not is really in question. Clearly, we do not have the ability to select whether the WAAS signals are to be used for corrections, ranging or both. We can only turn WAAS on or off. High end receivers used in aircraft generally have the abiltiy to select what they are using WAAS signals for.
  13. Auto variation is determined by look-up tables in the firmware. These tables are sometimes updated when new firmware releases come out. The annual increase/decrease in variation depends on your location. In Maryland where I live it's increases about 7' per year so I'm sure I will have upgraded my GPSr (completely new unit) before it becomes a problem. The variation does not come from the satellite signals directly. They have nothing to do with it.
  14. Yes, only in the new versions which have a hardware upgrade in addition to the firmware upgrade.
  15. It's only for the new models that have WAAS capability. Won't work in the older units.
  16. That seems a little high for the Navman 4460. I see one here for $220. There are lots of bluetooth receivers on the market now such as the i.Trek which is the one I use. It cost about $130.00 but doesn't come with any mapping software. For that I use Mapopolis. There's a free utility available for importing GPX files.
  17. Screen burn is not a problem with Liquid Crystal Displays. A problem known as temporary image persistance can occur (must be on for an extremely long time) and is similar to "screen burn" but it is reversible.
  18. I believe that unit has bluetooth? If so, you might consider a bluetooth GPS. I use an i.Trek but there are several others available. Just google "bluetooth gps".
  19. The 315 can be set to operate in 2d or 3d mode. If you set it to 2d it will prompt you for your current elevation. If your working under marginal conditions, i.e. only able to see 3 sat's, then setting it to 2d and entering your elevation, it will give an accurate position fix. If your in 3d mode and only receiving 3 sat's your fix can be way off because a fourth sat is needed for a timing correction. The timing correction is needed because the sat's have very accurate atomic clocks but our receivers do not. A lot of older models allowed entering your altitude for this purpose.
  20. It's a great idea. We vacation often and I always have my GPSr with me when were on the road so when it comes time to find a place to eat or shop...etc. I go to the GPS and search the points of interest to find them. I'm not sure of the process that companies go through to get their information to Mapsource's (GPSMap76S) database but the ones who don't, don't get my business.
  21. The earth rotates at approx 1,000mph so if I jump up in the air and am no longer physically connected to the earth...yeehaaa!!!
  22. Electronic compasses work by sensing the earths magnetic field just like any other compass and so they point to magnetic north. You may be thinking of gyrocompasses which point to true north.
  23. I use an HP Ipaq 4355 which has built in wireless lan and bluetooth, an i.Trek bluetooth GPSr and for software, I use Mapopolis street mapping for getting to the cache area and then Oziexplorer with USGS topo maps for finding the cache. I have Gpxsonar loaded as well for the cache information.
  24. File upload supports the following formats: jpg, gif, tiff If your original image is under 125k or 600 pixels wide, the largest image will not be resized. It doesn't do the best resizing job. Editing your own larger image is preferable. Final images will always be converted to jpg.
