  1. Download your free USGS quads for Tennessee here. To find the names of the quads you need go here and zoom in on your area until your in far enough to see the quad names. I see you use GPS Tuner. You'll have to convert these .tif files to a file type that it supports. Any good graphics program will do this. A nice feature of Oziexplorer is that it will automatically calibrate these maps. I don't think GPS Tuner will do that.
  2. Cockpit navigation and basic GPS navigation
  3. You can do this at GPSVisualizer. Download your .gpx file of unfound caches. Upload it to GPSVisualizer (file size cannot exceed 2MB, use GSAK to create custom .gpx files) and select "draw the map". As you can see, you have many options for the map but just go with the defaults to start. You must install Adobe's free SVG Viewer to view the maps in your browser. Just found this recently myself so I don't know a whole lot about it but it looks pretty cool for an online app. A better option would be to get Microsoft Streets and Trips ($20-$25) and use GSAK to export your .gpx files to .csv files to import into Streets. Much nicer interface in my opinion.
  4. 1.1 miles from East Falls Church station. 1.25miles from West Falls Church station. Shortest walking route by streets.

All topozone links on the cache pages should have datum=WGS84 in the url and all the ones Iv'e seen do. If the datum is not specified, topozone assumes it's NAD27 and will convert it to WGS84 and the position on the map will be wrong. If the datum is specified as WGS84 the postion on the map will be correct. You can see this for yourself by clicking one of the topozone links from a cache page and then edit the url to datum=NAD27 and you'll see the red cross-hair change position. The same will happen if you remove the datum string.
  6. Could you give us the link? A search for corner stone revealed 3 caches, one in California, one in Tennessee and one in Michigan.
  7. 2 entries found for megabyte. meg·a·byte ( P ) Pronunciation Key (mg-bt) n. Abbr. MB 1.A unit of computer memory or data storage capacity equal to 1,048,576 bytes. 2.One million bytes. There can be more than one definition to a term.
  8. Well, um, TECHNICALLY a 128Mb card has 128Mb of space, not 131.072Mb. It DOES however have 131,072Kb of space, since a Megabyte is technically 1024 Kilobytes, just like a Kilobyte is 1024 bytes. And that very same 131,072Kb is not 131,072,000 bytes, it is 134,217,728 total BYTES 131.072 million is the same as 131,072 thousand.
  9. All data stored in memory is in binary format. Binary is a base 2 number system. 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192(8Meg), 16384, 32768, 65536(64Meg), 131072(128Meg)...etc. Your 60CS probably has 65536K of overall memory with some dedicated to the firmware that operates the receiver and some for the basemap and the rest left over for uploading maps, waypoints, routes and tracks. The amount allocated for uploading maps is 56Meg which is apparently close to whats left over. Your 128 flash card actually has 131.072Megs of space.
  10. Location: Maryland Unit: Garmin GPSMap76S Eats batteries:No (I have bench tested the current draw with and without WAAS and there is no discernable difference observed with this unit) Accuracy improved: According to the EPE, yes. Not tested against a better standard Time to lock: About the same as getting the first 4 sat's locked

The position shown on the map at Topozone will be correct and the displayed coordinates will be in WGS84 as indicated above the map. Changing datums does not change the physical location but does change the displayed coordinates. 38° 59.391N 076° 27.002W(WGS84) and 38° 59.389N 076° 27.022W(NAD27) are the same physical location on the earth. If you go to Topozones view maps page, when you enter your coordinates you can select between WGS84 or NAD27 depending on what your original coordinates datum is.
  12. Yes, I am. I remember you came to our club and gave a talk on Geocaching. Youv'e changed your ID since then. We found one of your caches recently in Columbia. I hope to have a new cache placed as soon as the snow melts away.
  13. Get a ham radio license and you can use APRS to transmit your location. If your signal makes it to an Igate (internet connected receiver site) then anyone can see your location. I usually have my setup running on my work commute. You can see my location here. APRS is very active in the ham community.
  14. Where does this image go? Can we edit/delete our own uploads? Is there a limit on the number of images? I have deleted images that I uploaded to my archived cache pages. The link on the page is gone but if you type in the url they are still there.
  15. It would be similar to this screenshot of my Garmin Map76S
  16. OK, I downloaded the trial version and checked it out. I still prefer Ozi but of course I'm used to it. When I opened a USGS geotiff DRG the auto calibration was incorrect. I don't want to have to manually calibrate these topo's when Ozi does it correctly. Also I don't see an option to print the map with a UTM grid which is what I use. I don't see an option to switch datums. It looks like a very good app but I'm not happy with what I found as compared to Ozi with just a few minutes of playing with it. I'll have to play with it some more but if it won't auto-cal (correctly) the topo's, then it's not for me. I don't mind paying a buck for a topo that will work, but not when I can get topo's for many states for free.
  17. Can I use my own maps with this? From what I understand, you can't and can only use maps purchased from Memory-Maps. This is what I like about Oziexplorer. I can use any map I want, and I can get USGS topo's for many states online for free.
  18. I agree with RMB, Oziexplorer has an extensive list of features for working with your own maps, but you will have to spend some time learning how to use them all. It even does area calculations. Just draw a border around the area and it will give its size in acres or many other units.
  19. That must be near the Korean war memorial.
  20. See this link as well as this one. The signals will not penetrate the fusealage as you can see from this pic, I'm heading south and sitting on the right side of the plane. All the sat's are to the west with the signals coming through the window.
  21. I can't say enough about Oziexplorer, you have to go to the website to see the extensive list of features. As for the version for the Pocket PC, you can use GSAK to export your gpx file to an Ozi waypoint file and upload to the PPC. Here's a screen shot of it with a couple waypoints, and one that it's navigating to. I don't have the gpsr hooked up for this shot but if it was tracking, the crosshair at my location would be an arrow pointing in the direction I'm traveling. You can do just about anything with routes, tracks, waypoints, comments, events, points and other things with the PC version.
  22. Mapopolis for street maps and Oziexplorer with downloaded USGS topo maps. Here's Oziexplorer CE and topo on an Ipaq pocket pc.
  23. You may find what you are looking for here. Although I am an experienced Oziexplorer user and APRS user, I'm not familiar with these app's from the radio-active site.
  24. Hard to find any information on this "new" basic eTrex but here's a little more from the Yahoo eTrex group: From: "brey549" <brey549@y...> Date: Sun Jan 23, 2005 7:48 pm Subject: Re: EU Basic eTrex - SW ver 3.00? I got one of these here in the U.S. last month. In addition to WAAS, it seemed to have all the features of the current Legend except the maps (hunting/fishing, sunrise/sunset, 20 routes, etc.) Also, the manual was labeled "Etrex/Etrex Camo" so I guess they have merged the 2 products. I decided I wanted the maps so I took it back and bought a Legend instead. > > --- In etrex@yahoogroups.com, "l_misselli" <adele@i...> wrote: > > Dear all, > last month my basic yellow eTrex (bought in USA) lost its page > button and few days ago I had from italian importer a new unit (without > the packaging).
