  1. Those 15 minute chargers might be convenient, but they hammer the bajeebers out of your batteries.

It's a win/win for the people who sell cheap rechargeables, better to spend the money up front and get

a couple sets and use a lower mah. charger. The charge will 'stick' longer, and the batteries will live

longer. Jamming high current into a battery with high internal resistance generates heat, that in turn

breaks down the chemical components inside the battery, lose/lose for the consumer.

These guys seem to have a good selection of quality NiMH chargers: http://www.thomas-distributing.com/nimh_battery_chargers.htm I'm providing the link as I had a tough time finding a source for a good battery charger. I'm using a LaCrosse BC-900 these days.

I'm getting ready to buy a charger..Do you like that charger which is one on my list plus the Maha C-9000

  2. So. Here lately my girlfriend realized that I'm going to be gone on a ski trip for 18 Days in Montana and she also realized that I wouldn't be leaving my eTrex Legend behind for her to cache with. So, she went out and found a great deal ($75) for the same Garmin eTrex Legend...blue and all. We were messing around I 13% jokingly asked if I could paint her. NO! Was the answer. So, I started looking online on how to take them apart and what not. Basically, all I'm looking for is ideas / suggestions / recommendations on what I could do. I have more points loaded on my eTrex because I work further from home and sometimes need things to keep me occupied...I'd hate to end up in a drunken juggling match and forget who's is who's...and I'm a techy nerd. I'm open to all ideas / suggestions / recommendations on what I could do. Thanks guys

  3. Hello,

I have spent many hours lurking around these pages and reading a lot of great information. Based on what I was looking for I purchased the HCX and just received it yesterday.

I got this unit because my family and I drive our Rhino around the desert and up North when we go camping during the summer (live in AZ) and I don't want to get lost. We also just got started geocaching and I also wanted a gps for the car that can provide directions.

From what I've read there is TOPO 2008 and several different Navigator programs for street driving and directions.

    Here are my questions;

    1) Do the street map programs provide info on forest service roads as well or just actual streets?

    2) I need the most current up to date program and I understand there are some that are upgrades to existing software and some are full versions. Which one would I need for a full version?

3)I've looked on E-bay and there are several different mapping for street driving programs that say 2008 but the packaging looks different. One is Black font and the other is Blue. Does anyone know what is the most recent one?

4)Do you have the latest version of TOPO 2008 and for driving around forest service roads is it worth it?

Thank you for any information you can provide.

I have the same GPsr. I bought City Navigator NT vs. 2008 which gives auto-routing and real good street maps. The best price is $102.92 at www.thenerds.net

I pretty sure that if you buy this software on a micro sd card it will not transfer to your computer, but the DVD will transfer to your handheld. Double ck me on this, but thats why I didn't buy the micro sd on ebay and went with the DVD.

Info is: MapSource City Navigator North America NT on DVD contains full coverage for the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Navigate with confidence having interstates, highways, and residential streets at the tip of your finger. City Navigator North America NT provides automatic route calculations with turn by turn directions on the PC and on NT compatible Garmin units.

If yours is like mine, you won't have auto-routing until you buy the City Navigator. My routes were just straight lines until I installed City Navigator. Just the amount of data is worth it. hotels/gas stations/food/atm/banks, lots of stuff that comes in handy.

As far as your question about the wilderness, I can't answer. You will have country roads with City Navigator, but I doubt if it will show the other ones you will like.

You can turn ON TRACKING and the gps will follow you anywhere you go and you can backtrack and get back as long as you have a signals. I've found this very helpful since I ride a bicycle alot on the country roads.

  4. Ok, here is what I have.

I checked out GPScentral and also Radioworld they seem to have the best prices.(Canadian)

    ******************************************

    GPScentral

    Legend HCX $239.95

    Vista HCX $279.95

    Canadian Metroguide $ 59.95 (reg.$99.95)

    Canadian Topo $ 89.95 (reg.$119.95)

    Shipping $ 15.00

    ********************************************

    Radioworld

    Legend HCX $219.00

    Vista HCX $269.00

    Canadian Metroguide $ 69.00(reg.$129.00)

    Canadian Topo $ 69.00(reg.$129.00)

    Shipping $ 15.00

    ********************************************

The Topo and Metro are marked down when you buy a GPS also.

Can both these maps be used at the same time, like switching back and forth, have them both installed on one micro sd card.

Would I be better buying City Navigator North America DVD V8.0 ($129.00-149.00) instead of the other two and just use it.

would that work? Will be used mainly for Geocaching.

Again Thanks ANY & ALL help appreciated.

  5. He meant to say change it to "follow road".

I tried that too.... it is still showing it as two straight lines....????

    What gives?

    Matt

Mine did that too. I changed from the topo to City Navigator NT and it routes right now. If I change back to topo the straight lines come back. I can use topo and do a straight line, copy it to a CN NT map and recalculate it and it does the route the correct way. Hope I helped.

  6. In Mapsource, click on the waypoint that you want to move using the selection tool (white arrow) so that the waypoint highlights and then you can right click on the hightlighted waypoint and you should get a move option at the top of the list. The route will follow the waypoint.

Ergo, I was not able to get a MOVE option??

  7. OR....

click on the little flag and post a waypoint on your map where you want the route to move over to. Remember the name of it.

    NOW...

click on the ROUTE tab to the left of your map.

Double click on the route you want to edit.

Now add your new waypoint (for the new path you want) into the route you already have.

Don't panic. You can move the waypoint up and down in your route until it is where you want it.

Ok, I got the new road in place, can I delete another road thats not needed inbetween two roads?

  9. Perfectly fine if you get the right permission - also make it clear to nearby property owners what might be happenning. Some cachers avoid private homes but others like such hides.

I think I'll find some first. That will give me a better learning of what others are doing. Thanks for the tips.

  10. I recently purchased a Legend HCx to replace an older Legend. This new one works just fine as long as I don't have the memory card installed, but when it is installed it will get as far as the satellite screen and freeze up. I have left it on in this condition, hoping it was just processing and would snap out of it, for up to 20 minutes. The only thing it will respond to when frozen like this is removal of the batteries. I thought perhaps if I lowered the amount of maps on the card it would help, but no luck so far. The card is a 512Mb Sandisk card, currently with less than 117Mb of info on it. The only time the GPS will get past the Satellite screen with the card in place is when connected to the PC and the map transfer is complete. Has anyone else had this problem? Is this a defective unit, or is this a case of operator malfunction?

Have you tried a differant card?

  11. Is there a way to rid the screen of the Map Pointer info when you don't need it on the maps?

On the right side of the unit there are two soft keys. Hit the upper key and the pointer position info will go away. Every time you move the pointer, the position data will reappear and you only have to push the soft key again to clear the pointer info.

    cool, thanks

  12. I urge spending money for a good recharger...it pays for itself over its life.

    A good source is http://www.thomasdistributing.com/

Beat me to it again :P More money but worth it in the long run. I picked up the Maha9000 a while ago and glad that I did. It will bring back old almost dead batteries to a usable state.

Most of the LSD (Low Self Discharge) batteries will be fine.

Well, now I have an idea on batteries so I looked at Thomas website...http://thomasdistributing.com/index.htm and now I don't have a clue as to which charger I want. There's so many to choose from?? I love buttons and gagets tho...

  13. Ugh! I spent over 3 hours a few nights ago (reading posts here, as well as numerous pages on the Garmin web site and on retailers sites) deciding which version of City Navigator to order for our Vista HCx. The general consensus was definitely NT version of City Navigator & my personal choice was the latest version available due to the fact that I will probably never update it considering the ridiculous price to do so.

I *thought* I was ordering a 2008 NT version of the software. I have received what I ordered (by part number) and it is NOT the NT version, nor does it even have a v. number on it. I Googled the product code (010-10474-00) and results were returned saying that it is v.6, v.7 & v.8 (it is described as v.8 on the invoice) so I don't have a clue what it really is- some retailers say that it is a discontinued product.

The online retailer that I purchased it from says that they accept returns on unopened software at full price/credit, and their site shows that they sell City Navigator NT v.8 for the same price as I paid for this software (which I don't have a clue what it is). None of Garmin's product compatibility charts/pages will load now (they did the night I was ordering) so I'm pretty much in the dark as to if this software would or would not work with my unit.

The code at the bottom of the City Navigator North America DVD case is:

    007-00347-05 Rev. A 171-00152-05

Any input would be appreciated :D

The version you got is the City Navigator which is not the "NT" which stands for new technology. The NT version takes up less space on your MicroSD card. I'm thinking it should work on your HCX the same as the NT does.

  14. Here's what I tryed.

    change to demo mode

    turn satellite off

push menu button, then new location

choose USE MAP, automatic doesn't work in this case??whats it for anyway?

    point to new location

    then choose USE map

then from waypoint, choose second location and it works. I think??

I did my tests just in Demo mode, leaving the GPS receiver on. Auto would use your current satellite fix and would only be available if the GPSr was on. I'm not sure what you mean by your last point, though. With the route method, I created a route with two waypoints (which would be your two caches in this case). Then I used Demo mode and the map to tell it I was nearby the first waypoint. Then I went to the route I created and selected Navigate. I was trying to test routing (and I presume you are as well), so I chose Follow Road.

    Hope this helps.

Actually I was trying to help a family member who was on vacation and lost. If I use the pointer and zoom in on a city when in demo mode it thinks I'm there. There should be a way to do it without pointing to a city and using two waypoints?? after choosing AUTO

  15. I tried it on the HCx (for real this time), and I am seeing the same exact thing you are.

I wonder if they changed it on purpose, or if it's a bug?

Go to Demo Mode, then go to the Satellite screen, press the Menu button, tell it New Location, and Use Map. Then you can pick the location where you want to position yourself to start navigating.

I'm trying that, but it's not particularly user-friendly. My route goes between two geocaches. I'm trying to find one of them on the map, but unfortunately I have two problems: (1) there are a ton of geocaches here, so it's not easy to find the one I randomly picked as the starting location just by panning and zooming, and (2) unlike the regular map, the one that is displayed for setting the new location doesn't show the lat/long of the cursor when you're panning around.

Well, you could select a spot that's near the start point, then create a route between the two waypoints that you want to navigate between. When you select Navigate on that route, it should navigate you from your current location to the first point, then navigate to the next point, which is the part you care about.

    Here's what I tryed.

    change to demo mode

    turn satellite off

push menu button, then new location

choose USE MAP, automatic doesn't work in this case??whats it for anyway?

    point to new location

    then choose USE map

then from waypoint, choose second location and it works. I think??
