  1. Being from MA, I will definitely be putting those two on my To Do list.
  2. I totally agree with you that old caches that in poor condition should be disabled and honestly there is nothing worse then an unmaintained cache. However, the reason I think it would be 'bad for the sport' is because I think it would encourage people to place caches irresponsibly and simply for the sake of placing if they know they can disable when they have to move or for any reason at all. Furthermore, I think it is kind of sad when cache gets disabled for any reason because no one else can enjoy it (like my first find ), and this shouldn't become more commplace. Oh, by the way YW, Go Red Sox!
  3. I personally don't agree with the people who would require placement. I am, and I know others, who are college kids who move around every 2-4 years, and just don't have the means to settle. If I was to start a cache I would either have to disable it when I moved again, which is no fun for anyone or good for the sport. OR I would have to find someone to adopt it, which could be a pain. Plus, I know a Cacher who has thousands of finds and one hide. He maintains that hide INCREDIBLY well, and it is worth it to go even if you have many other times just to see how well maintained it is. I say let them cache!
  4. I love logging online, it is part of the fun for me to let the finder know I enjoyed his cache. I also like looking back at the records I make and think back about the find. I also log a sentence or two in the logbooks, but I always write less, as I am usually hot to trot off to my next cache. However, I have a friend who I introduced to caching who doesn't have an account, but does tons of caches, he is just in it for the hiking and finding. Which I think is cool.
  5. I always post what I took and left. I always check watchlist notifications and think it is fun to see when the stuff I leave is grabbed. I think it is part of the game. Plus, I like to show that I trade up and hope the trend is passed along.
  6. I brought my best friend and his girlfriend out on their first cache. They are the only people I have brought that actually went out and bought a GPS and continue to cache. My girlfriend as well I introduced and she loves it. She comes on nearly every cache with me and often leads the way. So I would say 2-3 serious. However, I have brought 7 different people on various caches with me. Mostly family. Although none of them have GPS's or have much interest to get into the sport. Most will ask to come along with me whenever possible.
  7. This thread makes me sad. The first TB I ever sent out was a great little dog. It was going rather well. Then someone took a ton of bugs from a hotel and never logged them. TB Page: Link
  8. I have a new question. I had to get a converter to convert my serial chord to USB for my Garmin. IT worked great and easily transfers with EasyGPS. However, I cannot seem to be able to get USAPhotoMaps to receieve my coordinates or recognize that my GPS is there no matter what Comm Port I choose. Any suggestions? Is there a way I can tranfer the EasyGPS points and routes into USAPhotoMaps without going through my GPS unit? Thanks, TH

  10. Thanks for the assistance! I'm gonna give it a try now. Sorry for putting this in the wrong forum as well.
  11. Love Micros. My first cache ever was a micro. They are the only way to place caches in many aspot in the city. Where caches can always be had on a trip/layover/etc... When they are not placed in the city, they are always fun to bring groups to to look around for hours with. Much harder then stumbling across the ammo box. Plus, they allow for the creativity to run wild. I say the more the merrier!
  12. Yes, I am sure there have been threads on this before, sorry for the repeat. I am not new to Caching, but for the past couple years, I have just been plugging coordinates into my eTrex and found the caches and couldn't have been happier. However, I have recently purchased KeyHole (Google Earth Plus) and have had a ton of fun going back to the program after caching and trying to plot my path onto the satellite images; find my distance, etc.... I was hoping there was some way to upload my "Track" path onto a mapping satellite system so that I could capture images of the Tracks overlaid on the image. Also it would be really cool to have a master map plotting all of my tracks in different colors to look at the cumulative effect, but this might be asking too much. Is this possible? How compicated/costly is it? Secondly, I also wanted to plot all my cache points onto a sattelite map, I am sure this is done in similiar fashion, I am just not sure how to make this step up in technology from basically just understanding the eTrex to the conversion to PC. If this helps Right now I have: - I have an eTrex Legend w/ PC chord - The basic mapping system on the GPS Unit - Keyhole mapping software Thanks for any help, TH
  13. Great Thread! I normally listen to softer Indie music (Elliot Smith; Iron and Wine; Shins), but pre-caching music I tend to listen to are some heavy rock to get me in the mood and get me pumped up; something I can picture caching to. It's actually funny, as I don't really like a this genre, but it really gets me ready to bust out of the car doors to run into the woods. One of my caching CD's: 1: ACDC - For Those About To Rock 2: Guano Apes - Open Your Eyes 3: Hendrix - Voodoo Chile 4: Bush - Machine Head 5: Nonpoint - Headstrong 6: System of a Down - Chop Suey 7: Disturbed - Down with the Sickness 8: Sabbath - Paranoid 9: Skynard - Simple Man 10: Godsmack - I Stand Alone 11: Audioslave - Like A Stone 12: ACDC - Hells Bells
  14. Ok, I have a question. I have purchased KeyHole (or Google Earth Plus) and I have noticed that the coordinates are somewhat off. Has anyone else found this? If so, what is the best way to compensate?
  15. Briansnat, that is a great pack right there! For me it all depends on time for preperation and length of cache. The other day I had a long walk, but a quick jaunt into the woods. I threw a prize in my pocket. Had the GPS in one hand and the camera around my neck and that was it. However, I do have a CachingPack prepared for the longer days and longer journeys: Backpack: - DEET - three kitchen knives (one on the bigger side) - Swiss Army Knife - Waterbottle - Cell Phone - Extra pens/pencils/log books to leave - Elastics - Rope - Extra Zip Lock Bags - My personalized Caching Cards - Scotch Tape - Zip Lock Bag Full of Goodies - Extra Socks - Compass - Print Outs - Hat - Gloves - Cache Journal - Washcloth I'm sure I'm forgetting something. But it is fun to go into outdoor stores and Army Navy Supply Stores tothink of things to add!
  16. Some great blogs out there! When I have more time in my life such that I can spend the time caching that I want to, I will certiantly have a blog like these! Great work and interesting reading they will provide in the future!
  17. Garmin eTrex Legend. Great Size Great antenna Always gets me to a good location However, the compass is beginning to get a little shotty. Sometimes it will point me in the wrong direction for some time. Then I have to tap it to get it going again. Also, it is horrible in brush cover. Even the slightest. Hope to upgrade someday.
  18. By Far: Roman Forum (archived) Only cache I have done out of the country. Went one a two week tour with a college class. During one of the lunch breaks me and my friend were able to grab this one in one of the most beautiful cities, in perhaps the most storied and historic spot in the world. REally great cache. Sad to see it is gone.
  19. My guess is his kids were bad and this is punishment. Ideas: Plastic Mailbox in the middle of nowhere. Then just change it after the PS2 is gone.
  20. Last year I made 400 business cards on some business card maker. It had my name and a little Hawaiian lady dancer for a logo. Then had items to be filled in Date: Weather: Cache #: Time: I would bring it with me and tape it to the top of the log and write a little note below.
  21. Not new to the sport, but I do Caches here and there in-between homework, so I have a low total. I try to check to forums every once in a while to see what is going on in the cache world. I hope to hit the scene hard this summer after work, I miss it. Probably be doing this sport forever, and I hope when I graduate law school, I will have more time on the weekends to get my total up there! Honestly, one of the funnest most relaxing activities I have ever took part in.
