  1. I thought it is a nicely done thread. Just reminding people in a nice way. Thanks HP.
  2. Very nice! I have a collection of sig items that I've collected. These are first rate
  3. Other geocachers probably would not care, I have enjoyed seeing kids out on the trail, yelling out the coordinates and having fun. Have fun, it's a game!!!

    New!

Hi Shedidthistime! I always enjoy hearing about someones new enthusiasm for geocaching. Have a really great time , check out events near you where you will meet the geocaching group nearest to your home. I enjoyed reading about your educational achievements-you sound like a bright guy. Even though I find them challenging, try a few of the puzzle caches. You get two shots of excitement-one to solve the puzzle and then another to go and find the physical cache. Puzzle caches are the ones with the ? in the description. Good luck and remember-Have Fun!!
  5. I attended a town board meeting to ask permission after having made some initial phone inquiries and e-mails. They were very nice and did have some questions. However, I'm pretty sure many cachers don't ask permission, especially those that own 100's of them.
  6. Welcome! I know you'll love getting out there! I've always wanted to go to Scotland - I've heard it's beautiful and besides my maiden name is Bruce! And I love Andy Goldsworthy's art work and he's a Scotsman too! Best of luck to you and Merry Christmas from the USA.
  7. My husband was always dragging me out for hikes up mountains/hills,like Dunderberg, Monodnack, North and South Sugarloaf and Beacon. We read about this somewhere, the newspaper maybe, and I decided that we might like it so I got him the yellow eTrex. Well, he's a Luddite to the core, and I appropriated the gift and started to cache while I was out with him. He's OK with it but gives me a 2 cache a day limit. What I regret is that I didn't have the coords for the caches for those long hikes I took b4 I started caching! Monandack especially and Beacon were killers and I don't know if I could get up there again! http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/public/style_emoticons/default/tongue_animated.gif
  8. I'm glad you didn't give up. I think the "favorites" indicator might be useful for the better hides. Welcome and may you and your daughter have many fun adventures together!!
  9. Maybe someday I'll get out to Southeast Texas to find a cache and you'll get out here to NYC to find one in Central Park! It sure is a nice way to be together, and brings the world together with every outing becoming an adventure! Welcome to you and your family and have fun!
  10. That thingamajig looks complicated!!!! It would be cool to figure out how to use it and not necessarily depend on a gpsr but I don't think I could take 12 yrs in the USMC let alone boot camp!
  11. I always log my DNFs, and with all the snow, I've been logging more DNFs than finds. One incident, though I'll share-I have hidden only one cache, and a very prolific cacher here in this area e-mailed me for a hint, which I was glad to send him, but I did ask him to log a DNF. Well, long story short, he only logged his find after I sent him the hint and never the DNF. The guy has got 1000s of caches under his belt, and I guess you'd call him a "pro" but I think he shoulda done the more honest thing so he lost a bit of georespect from me. Anyway-it doesn't keep me up at night, I've just made a decision about the way I want to play this game.
  12. When I tried caching in Europe I bought a Garmin maps for street in Paris but I found out afterward that I could have just used the hand held without the purchased map card. However, it took FOREVER to get a lock on satellites, and I found out that it sometimes takes a very long time (30 min or more) for the GPSr to get a new lock when the location has changed drastically while it has been off during the plane ride.
  13. I'm afraid your link only works for you, it is not a valid address for the rest of the world. Too bad, I tried everything to insert a picture from my computer to get on the forum page, but nothing works, so I just put the picture on my profile. java script:emoticon('',%20'smid_2')
  14. http://192.168.1.101/~karenmahakian/ Hope you get a chuckle from this -I had to share when I saw this thread!
  15. What I do is to put my DNFs on a watch list and then when they are found by others I get more ideas/hope of how to find. And it keeps me motivated too. When I find a cache, I just take it off my watch list.
  16. I usually take nothing and leave lotsa stuff in the depleated caches I find. I think of myself as a little Mrs Claus or a cache fairy. LOL!
  17. I completed a very special and lengthy multi-cache called "The Bridges and Arches of Central Park" The CO has as a reward a limited edition of commemorative coins that each finder could take and do with what he/she wanted. Also, the CO has a GC trackable that can be obtained by making a small donation to the Central Park Conservancy which maintains the bridges and arches. The CO suggested to me that I do not have to release this coin but I can bring it to events where it can be "discovered" or I can use it as a dipping coin to track milage as I go from cache to cache over time.
  18. I loved your diatribe. Yeah, I'm having to be polite and ladylike too. No one who doesn't cache really understands me anymore. I need a cachin friend I guess.
  19. Well, Me and my caching partner have put together a power point presentation. We will have our GPSr, the cache with some swag and a log. I will invite them to a cache event or to go find a local cache at another time. Good suggestions, all. We attend the meeting on Monday night at 7 pm. I'll get back to you all about how it went. Thax for the help.
  20. Hey cache gurus, java script:emoticon('',%20'smid_24') OK, Who really asks permission-officially? I've been happily caching for awhile, and now, after 121 finds, feel ready to place a very well considered, well crafted puzzle cache near my home in a town park that can be well maintained by me. (To me it feels like I'm getting a pet). I called my caching friend who is an elected official in town and he tells me to contact the rec supervisor. When I do, he has tons of questions, which I answer very throughly with an email, and even a great letter I found on this site having to do with explaining and asking permission for placing caches. Then I get a call from the supervisor saying that the town board has to vote on it, and can I also come in to give a presentation to answer more questions at a town board meeting where the town supervisor will be present. I feel like I'm being targeted by the muggles. My real question is, Have any of you had to go through this just to ask to hide a cache? There are HUNDREDS of caches all over the place here, obviously I have to be one of the few who have asked permission, there are caches all over the town parks, and no one "in charge" seems to know about it. java script:emoticon('',%20'smid_10')
  21. Yeah, phooey. Does anybody want an SD card-brand new hardly used. Maybe I'll put it in a cache. Rats. "Loading the caches as POI's is the only way to increase the number of caches." I've done that with the Nuvi 255-and it works great. I suppose theres no way to do it with the Venture cause there's only waypoints - no POIs Thanks guys.
  22. Hey all you techies out there, I bought a SD card to increase waypoint memory in my etrex venture, which has a slot for it. However, when using the Macaching program to transfer a list, I find I cannot access that extra memory in the GPSr and I'm still locked into the 250 or so waypoint memory limit. I looked through the GPSr system and map settings to no avail. Is there a work around where I could find another way to transfer the data onto the card and then pop it into the GPSr? Thanks in advance, I'm keepin my fingers crossed!!
  23. I read the NOOB questions and answers and I'm amazed at how patient and helpful everyone is. I've learned alot, but am now getting a little beyond the standard NOOB questions. Actually I'm here right now trying to figure out where to post a techie type question.
  24. I feel the same way. The moderators on this forum have endless patience and great attitudes too (helpful, and often humorous.) I wish geocaching had been around when my kids were little.
  25. I have been using MacCacher also, it is a nice tool, not quite as nice as GSAK but it's close. I can download pocket queries into my Garmin Venture quick and easy from MacCacher. But I have been experimenting successfully with paperless caching using the Garmin Nuvi 255W I have for the car using directions from pilotsnipes (AWESOME!!) and for that I have to use Windows GSAK, and then Garmin POI uploader (on Windows also) to get it all (notes, descriptions , logs) into the Nuvi. I like to use both GPSs, the Nuvi for driving, for cache "lookout, and paperless info, and the handheld for the actual hike.
