  1. I have available a new, boxed Magellan Trailblazer XL GPSr. I put batteries in it to make sure it works and see that there is a small dead pixel area on the left edge near the top. It does not affect more than a column or two of pixels and is only a few of them within that section. Nothing that really affects the use of the device at all. It includes the original manual (still in the original plastic baggie), carrying case, and lanyard strap. Note that this is an older unit that is probably not best for a newbie to geocaching. It's more of an "interesting collector's item", in my opinion, than good choice for a daily GPSr. $35 plus shipping. A used one just closed on EBay for over this same price. PayPal preferred, but will accept other forms of payment. EBay username is "john_goggan" if you'd like to check feedback. Thanks! - John...

  4. I disagree. Currently, I simply drop the PocketPC into it's cradle in the car -- and drop the GPS into it's windhsield mount. Therefore, there is no connecting or disconnecting of cables or wires or anything else. Pulling/pushing a CF item out of and into a PocketPC in a daily basis is, in general, not a good idea as far as the CF port goes. And, would just be annoying. Plus, if I do what you suggest, it means also plugging in another cable (for power) each time I put the PDA in the car. So, I'd be going from just dropping the PocketPC into a cradle -- to plugging in a CF GPS and connecting a cable for power. That sounds like two steps backwards to me, not one step forward. I'm just trying to keep it as simple as I have it now -- but with more recent hardware at both ends. I actually already have a CF GPS unit -- I just do not want to have to use it because of the things I've mentioned above. - John...
  5. Indeed -- I might go with a custom cable in the end. Just feel funny paying $50+ for a cable when it shouldn't be that much of an issue. Oh well. - John...
  6. Sorry for any confusion. Here is what I want (and currently do -- but won't be able to easily do if I upgrade from what I've found so far): 1. I want one GPS receiver -- a handheld unit with a screen. Preferrably something like a Garmin 60C-line unit or Magellan Explorist of some sort. I don't want to have to have two GPS receivers -- such as one handheld for outside the car and one CompactFlash for inside. 2. I want to interface it somehow to a PocketPC running navigation software -- such as Mapopolis. 3. I don't want to take my PocketPC into the woods. I live in Michigan, geocache in the snow, and have no intention of taking a non-waterproof PDA worth several hundred while I'm wandering around looking for a box of trinkets. That's all I want. That being said, you are doing the 2-GPS approach -- which doesn't appeal that much to me for various reasons (1. I don't want to have to buy two GPSrs when either should be able to do the job. and 2. I take my PocketPC into and out of my car all time -- I don't want to be having to unplug and replug the CF GPS all the time.) Note that your 1-GPS solution would be fine -- except that you are using an older Vista. None of the new Magellan units support NMEA output through a serial cable really -- so it isn't easy to interface to a PocketPC. On top of that, getting serial data into a new PocketPC isn't trivial any more either, unfortunately. Hence, my trouble finding a good solution to this. Again, what I have works fine -- but is old. I want a new handheld and new PocketPC. Thanks though. - John...
  7. So then do you take your PocketPC with you when you go geocaching? That's exactly what I don't want to do and I am trying to avoid. We're in Michigan here -- climbing through snow to get to a geocache is not something I want to do with a new PDA worth several hundred or more. - John...
  8. Yes, I also love Mapopolis -- I use it on a regular basis. That's actually exactly why I started this thread -- because I want a new GPSr and a new PocketPC and want to continue using Mapopolis. And, in the end, I just want one GPSr. I think it odd/sad that, it appears that without some odd hookups or expensive/hard-to-find custom cabling, it is difficult for someone today to make this work without having two GPSrs (one handheld and one exclusively for connection to the PocketPC that does it via Bluetooth or CompactFlash slot). - John...
  9. Thanks, but I'm only really interested in ways to connect handheld GPSrs to a PocketPC. I don't want to carry two GPS units. I want to use one primary GPSr for everything (geocaching and navigation). I know of many other solutions (standalone Bluetooth or CompactFlash GPS units), but that isn't what I'm looking for. Thanks though. - John...
  10. Indeed -- where exactly? I hate it when people tell people that their prices are too high and can get it brand new for much cheaper -- and then don't have anything to back that up. If you are going to say it -- tell people where. Otherwise, it just comes off as rude really. - John...
  11. Is it possible that you just live closer to the Sun than the rest of us? - John...
  12. I still love to note that I won a "closest to the tee" competition with my trusty Magellan MAP-330 at a MiGO event in 2003. Everyone there with their $500+ Garmins and such were not thrilled. - John...
  13. I'm curious about people out there that are using handheld GPSrs along with software on their PocketPC (such as navigation software). If you are doing this, what hardware (GPSr and PocketPC) are you using and how are you connecting? Personally, I'm using a Magellan MAP-330 GPSr and my Toshiba Genio e550G PocketPC. To make it work, I have the Genio serial cradle mounted in my Durango and it connects to the serial cable of the MAP-330 directly using a null-modem adapter. My main issue is that I'd like to move to a newer PocketPC and/or GPSr -- but most of the PocketPCs today no longer have serial cradles and a lot of new handheld GPSrs no longer have serial output! So -- that is why I'm very curious about other people's connections. If you are connecting your GPSr to your PocketPC, please tell me which models and how you have it interfaced. Thanks! - John... P.S. Is Bluetooth the answer for the future of doing this? If so, why don't we see more GPSrs with Bluetooth? Do Magellan or Garmin currently have any?
  14. Just to note it, Merzin decided to buy an entry-level unit instead. So, this is still available if anyone else is interested. Thanks! - John...
  15. I don't want this thread to just get forgotten as often happens with such things. When a Mod has a chance, can they give me some information on my question (the first paragraph in my post from "Dec 23 2005, 11:57 AM")? I seriously am quite curious about the policy on such things. Basically, can people post deals/specials in the non "GPS Garage Sale" forums? If Sports Authority has 60CS units for half price -- I want people to be able to tell me. - John...
  16. Yes, it is still available if you'd like it. Sent you an email. Just let me know. Thanks. - John...
  17. Bump. Didn't have time to get this on EBay before the holidays. Now that things are slowing down, I thought I'd offer it here one more time before it goes to auction. $200 plus shipping still well below EBay prices and a good deal on this still packaged, brand-new SporTrak Color! Thanks! - John...
  18. Also, I thought of one other question that I need clarification on. The guidelines seem specific to THIS forum. I see no such guideliness on "GPS Units and Software" which says it is for "any and all discussions about GPS units." Does that mean that if people make posts in there that Sports Authority has the Legend C on sale, that that is fine? But doing it here in the Sale forum where people might actually LOOK for such information is against the rules? That seems a bit backwards to me. What about if someone from the Sports Authority actually showed up and tried to "solicit customers" directly? Can they do that in other forums, but not here? If not (due to other rules elsewhere), then why do we have additional guidelines here? I certainly don't want people from Sports Authority doing that -- so please don't get me wrong. I just think that there are some issues to be clarified here -- and a healthy discussion should help with that. That being said, I am serious about the first paragraph above. I really do want to know if telling people that there might be a sale at some store is allowed in "GPS Units and Software". If so, then it seems backwards to me and not the original intent of the Sale forum and the guidelines for it. If not, then why not? Does some other overall forum rule apply instead? Thank you. - John...
  19. I didn't at all mean to suggest that this was a Mod making things up. I said that the guidelines were open to interpretation and that some clarification -- or even changes -- might be in order. Why is it always so difficult for people here to consider even DISCUSSING these things without feeling so defensive? "(either intentional or non-intentional)" pretty much sums it up. Don't do it and you are fine. This is a perfect example of what I am talking about. You are focusing on the "either intentional or non-intentional" part of that. I don't think it "pretty much sums it up" because I also read the next few words and mentioned this specifically above -- the part of "attempt to solicit customers." Me letting someone know that there is a deal at Sports Authority isn't really an attempt by me to "solicit customers" for them. I'm just making a polite suggestion -- if they happen to go there, fine -- I really don't care either way. I'm not trying to solicit customers for Sports Authority by making such suggestions. THAT is what I'm talking about -- THAT is what I'm referring to when I say that a Mod might read it differently than a user here. Others have agreed with me on that -- realizing that I'm not "soliciting customers." Or at least considering that one might assume that, when the guideline was written, the INTENT was to prevent people from the Sports Authority from coming in here and "soliciting customers." I agree that would be a good guideline -- but it seems that you obviously meant more than that, correct? That is why I wanted to discuss it. Again, this comes up often -- I see it as a fairly common "end of discussion" thing from the Mods here. Why are we not allowed to discuss possible guideline interpretations or even maybe discussion potential suggestions for change in the forums here? Instead, such discussions always seem to be shut down and then directed to the "contact" email. I don't want to just discuss it with the Mods -- I want to get the input of other USERS here. Why is that always such a big fear of those in control here? It isn't a "moot point." - John...
  20. Yes, but I guess my problem is exactly that: it appears that the rules (ok, "guidelines"), as interpretted by the Mod here, at least -- do NOT allow such things. That's why I started this thread -- to try to hash that out a bit. Instead, the Mod has simply replied to this thread and indicated that it seems clear to him, so that is it. Not the "discussion" that I was hoping for. So, people saying that it goes on all the time anyhow doesn't really help any. If it is going on and people want it, then the Mods should discuss the possibility of changing the guidelines -- instead of just saying "nope, it is already clear and not allowed" and then having others go "but we do it anyhow and it seems fine." That's the problem, IMO. - John...
  21. Sorry, just to be clear -- I quoted what was quoted by the Moderator that closed the topics I was referring to. I wasn't trying to "selectively quote" anything -- I was just requoting what he used when he closed the threads. And, yes, this forum is for personal selling -- but when someone posts that they are looking to buy something, I don't think it should be a problem to tell them a good place online to do so. That being said, I'd be for changing the rule, actually -- to explicitly allow the posting of good deals on buying one new. I don't see much good reasoning to allow personal posts with lame prices, but not good deals on new equipment. *shrug* - John...
  22. I guess I have some questions about this policy since a couple of topics that I felt were very beneficial to others were just closed. The policy appears to be this: "Commercial Postings/Solicitations are not allowed. Commercial content as a direct or indirect (either intentional or non-intentional) attempt to solicit customers through a forum post will be edited or deleted. Notwithstanding the above, Groundspeak reserves the right to include limited commercial content in this Forum, in its sole discretion." My interpretation of that was that people posting commercial listings for their own companies cannot post here. In other words, some guy from the Sports Authority can't come in here and post that they have stuff for sale. However, I saw no problem with just general users kindly pointing people toward good deals online if they are not otherwise part of that company. Isn't that a GOOD thing? I mean, if someone posts that they are looking for a new eTrex whatever, shouldn't people be able to reply and say "Hey -- the Sports Authority has those on sale for $blah.blah this week!" Similarly, if buy.com has a big sale going on, shouldn't everyday users (not from buy.com making a "commercial" post) be able to mention it here for others that are interested? Someone telling someone about such deals, in my opinion, is not an "attempt to solicit customers". It's just an attempt to let someone know about a deal. The guy that posted that Sports Authority was having a sale last week wasn't really "attempting to solicit customers", was he? That just seems too literal an interpretation of that rule -- was that the real intent of it? It just seems that closing any thread mentioning a sale or deal at some commercial company is NOT the intent of the "no commercial postings" policy. Can we get some clarification on that? I think NOT being able to mention deals and such for other users here is a very bad way to go. I've seen lots of people thanking others within the last few weeks for finding deals at Sports Authority, Amazon, and numerous other places that happened to be having sales on GPRrs recently. Why/how is that a bad thing? Thanks! - John...
  23. Use promo code "CUSTAPPRSAVE" on Amazon.com products (such as most of these GPSr units) for an extra 5% off the current price. Expires today. Just FYI. - John...
  24. Indeed -- they keep bouncing around. If someone wants one of the higher-end units, I'd keep checking the links above until they drop down close to the listed prices again. - John...
