  1. Most muggles don't know what a geocache is or what geocaching is, so labeling it as such probably won't stop the "it's a bomb" call if the muggle is inclined to come to that conclusion. Even if it had a full explanation on the side, would they pick it up to read it, they probably won't open it to read the splurb inside. BTW, that tree is to nice to be blowing up!
  2. Just adding a follow up in case someone else has a similar problem and reads this thread... Got email from Allen describing his units symptons and although not identical, they were similar. I thought I'd pulled it (mines a Globalnav 200 BTW) apart but must have been thinking of something else cause I hadn't. Didn't have a suitable screwdriver which you need. A 'Torx' #7. Got one of them today and a battery (CR2450) and replaced it. It fixed it! At the moment I'v just got the power wires taped to the battery because they were connected to spot-welded tabs on the original. I'll have to have a go at soldering them on although from past experience trying to do that with car key fobs, it ain't easy to solder to a battery (and probably dangerous too!) Anyway... my Globalnav is back working and I can resume caching after a big break!
  3. Allen, what were the symptoms? I have a GlobalNav and it shuts down straight away after turning on. Like you, I got no joy from Lowrance (the fix cost was a set price regardless of problem and a good portion of the price of a new one) and have never done anything about it. I made one half-attempt at pulling it apart but felt like I was going to break the clamshell trying to snap it open (after removing screws inside battery compartment) Can you remember where the locking points were? For the record and original poster, when it worked it was accurate. Regards, Nige
  4. I believe I was the 1st to post this topic on the original board. I haven't read this board for ages as my GPS died and I haven't gotten around to buying another with an addition to the family and a new house taking up all our time. Saw an advert for a GPS the other day and thought.. hmmm, Summer's approaching (in Australia here) might have to investigate a new GPS so found my geocaching booksmarks and come on over! Not many names I recognise but an interesting read! Since the links didn't go back to the original discussion, nor would everyone read them, my name is my car, which I use in most forums I frequent.
  5. We call it "dead horse" (tomato sauce) but 'we' are Aussie's and call some things some weird names.. almost as bad as you "septic tanks"

  7. I might have missed it but nowhere in the thread did I see the inclusion of the vital ingredient to USA (useless statistical analysis)... incorporating your phone number into the calculation

  9. yep, Sth Vermont.. tell me about this Melway CD? ukdean may actually want to GPS their way to the location, but I suggest drive straight there via maps, keep the firlfriend happy and then use the time saved to chase a real cache!

  13. here's another version with a little extra functionality http://unite.com.au/~u3819a/rot13/ROT13.html I also did a Visual Basic applet (24kb) to do the same http://unite.com.au/~u3819a/rot13/ROT13.exe (this will require VB runtime DLL's on your PC which usualy get installed with Windoze)

  15. Do you want the street address as well? It's not far from me (sittingn here at work) and you'd be surprised at the number of people that want to visit it.
  16. Got an example? If a picture is 'all little boxes' then you've usually saved it with too much 'jpg compression. You should be able to get a image under 100K and still look good. Based on your question description, I'm guessing you're using a digital camera? This might take images with the number of pixels anywher from 1000 to 3000 across. Most people use 800 pixel wide screen display modes, so you really need to resize your pictures down to about 500-600 pixels wide (less if it's a portrait' orientated pic.. say 400-450pixels) for them to fit on the screen. Using some piture editing software (Photoshop/etc) resize the image and save a copy as a .jpg. Experiment with the jpg compression factor to see what effect it has on the final image. Always keep you're original file and work from that, as resizing/resaving jpgs is not a good idea as they loose infomation each time you do it, the end result looking less than satisfactory! If you're pics are looking a little fuzzy after resizeing, you can apply a little 'unsharp masking' to make them look better before saving the final copy. There are many sites about that give step by step instructions for all this. Try www.scantips.com
  17. What the others have mentioned is what a message that is a 'spoiler' contains. A slight twist of this definition a 'spoiler' is the warning shown, usually by including the words *SPOILER* that by clicking the associated link (or maybe scrolling down the page), there is infomation that will/could give the game away, whatever the topic. When creating message/topic that contains a spoiler, remember to make the topic text generic so people know what you're refering to but doesn't actually indicate what the message says, so they can avoid it if they desire.
  18. in my part of the world, "cache" is not pronounced like "cash" (which sounds like 'gash') The a is pronounced 'ay' and the h like 'sh' to get 'kay-sh' (all said together) This turns into 'geo-kay-shing' phew, Aussies will understand.. I think!
  19. I should add myself to the list "you haven't had a working GPS for a year and you still visit the geocaching page"

  21. cycle=motorcycle? (I hope.. otherwise you sure can pedal fast!!!) Car speedos are usually optimistic, maybe motorbike ones are too. here in Oz, speeding is a major topic, with many handheld, mobile and fixed 'speed cameras' in use. They used to be set something like the speed limit +10% + 3kph before you got a ticket (say 69 in a 60 zone, 113 in a 100 zone), but recently they did away with the 10% bit which means their new tolerance is in fact less than the speedo accuracy required by the design rules governing vehicle manufacture. As you could gather, people are not happy! Anyway, the other night on a 'current affairs' type of program, the story was about speedo inaccuracy and the story 'expert' was checking speedo's with a handheld GPS. Wonder if he geocaches on weekends!
