  1. Back in my scouting days we had waterproof match containers that were about the size of bison tubes. Not sure how they would stand up to being submerged for extended periods of time but might be worth looking into. Come to think of it, I'm not sure how you would keep it submerged without putting something inside to weigh it down but then that wouldn't leave room for a log.
  2. That is funny Jester. My wife I'm quite certain would kill me if I made her hunt for gifts like that. Would have been great when I proposed to her back in 1994. We went to a local state park and I sent her on a scavenger hunt to various places around the park to collect items that represented our relationship. It ultimately led her to the observation tower where I was waiting up top with roses and the ring. Unfortunately this was in mid-November in Nebraska and it was quite cold. She was a little pissed until I took out the rock and popped the question. As to the other points people have made regarding the original post topic. No, there are now poisonous snakes around and I had no intention of posting any of the cache coordinates on the website or in any way opening it up to the public.
  3. Thanks Motorcycle Mama! Worked like a champ!
  4. Okay, I just signed up as a premium member and I just created my first pocket query. After a couple of tries, I was able to get the pocket query email but the file that was attached has a .efw suffix. I've tried opening this file with winzip, GSAK & EasyGPS and none of them seem to recognize the file type. I double checked that I selected the file to be zipped and I had. Now what do I try?
  5. I remember this story. Classic! Nothing like calling 911 and saying "I'm lost but I can tell you exactly where I am!"
  6. I was just curious as to if anyone has ever put together a cache hunt for a birthday party for kids? My parents live out on a acreage next to my brother and sister-in-law who have a small farm so they have several acres of open space that would be great for geocaching. The cool thing is that we wouldn't be limited to the normal restrictions (such as burying caches) that need to apply to caches posted on geocaching.com. I was just thinking this would be a fun activity for a group of kids and wondered if anyone had done anything similar.
  7. I agree with nearly all of the above. To me it is strictly a matter of personal preference. Whatever makes your boat float is my motto.
  8. Well how funny. I haven't logged onto the Geocaching site for several months and finally today, decided to see what, if anything was new. Found this topic and felt that it applied to me. I started caching last summer. I'd like to say that I was hooked from the beginning but to me, that implies that I couldn't stop. Well, I loved the hobby and still enjoy it and really thought that I would cache a lot. However, when push came to shove, I just haven't had enough time to do it. I work full time, am a father, I'm a grad student and I have began to work on a plan to open my own restaurant in the next year or so. Time has really gotten away from me and as such, I have not had time to cache, or even keep up on the latest cache happenings in my area. I fully intend to cache again, hopefully in the near future. So, maybe this sheds some light on the topic. Then again, maybe not.
  9. My take on this is the same as most above. However, if I am on a multi-, and I don't finish it in the same day but I have every intention of finishing it within a few weeks, I don't really see the need to post anything until I have tried to find the final cache. I just don't see the need to document every step of the way on the website. I would exercise the same caution that others have in that if you post a DNF, make sure to provide an explanation so as not to discourage peole from looking or to cause the cache owner a potentially unnecessary trip to check on the cache. ------------------------------------------------------------ I am Lothar, King of the Hill people. 10. I was reading the Yellowstone National Parks boards while planning our family vacation to the area this past summer. One of the posters mentioned finding a virtual cache in the park (marked nail on a foot-bridge). His hiking partner knew about geocaching and told him about it. I thought it sounded interesting so I checked out the website and was promptly hooked. ------------------------------------------------------------ I am Lothar, King of the Hill people. 11. I think this has been hashed out before but for me it is a hobby more than anything. But it really can be anything to anyone. There can be a competitive aspect to it but it certainly isn't essential. Santa Claus - Most definately, he eats cookies and drinks milk at my house every year. Easter Bunny - Most definately not. Bunnies don't lay eggs. Jack-o-Lantern - Not a person or entity but a thing. The Great Pumpkin, now thats a different story... ------------------------------------------------------------ I am Lothar, King of the Hill people. 12. Geodashing.org seems a little different than the geodashing they showed last night. The geodashing they showed last night seemed to be a shorter, one-day type race to several predetermined waypoints. At each waypoint, you receive the coordinates to the next one. Sounded pretty neat I thought but then again, so does geodashing.org. I too watched that show hoping to see a piece about geocaching. Now I want a Hummer for my next vehicle. ------------------------------------------------------------ I am Lothar, King of the Hill people. 14. This sounds like a small-scale version of The Amazing Race. I'd love to do it but there isn't one close to me. ------------------------------------------------------------ I am Lothar, King of the Hill people. 15. Sounds interesting. My dream GPSr would be one that can connect to the internet or that can receive information on caches that are nearby my location. So far, that has been the biggest downside to geocaching. The inability to do it on the fly without any preplanning or preparation. I have several times found myself with some freetime but no access to a computer. I wish I could just turn on my GPSr and have it tell me where the nearest caches are. I have several caches coords saved in my GPSr but I don't always have my caching pack with the cache pages and I'm not always close to caches that I've pre-loaded. ------------------------------------------------------------ I am Lothar, King of the Hill people. 16. I'm not aware of any place but I can't say that I've looked very hard. I've often wondered the same thing. What I have done in the past is locate the address using Microsoft Street and Tips, then I put on the GPS tracker and point to the push pin. It isn't exact but it is reasonably close. Might be a little tough as an address may be a several acre piece of land. ------------------------------------------------------------ I am Lothar, King of the Hill people. 17. Good question and unfortunately I have no answer. Probably a geo-gang thing. The first one I think is different as that is the international "L" sign for "Loser". Well, OK, maybe not international but you know what I mean. ------------------------------------------------------------ I am Lothar, King of the Hill people. 18. Just got my DVR through my local cable company about a month ago. I love it! Tape two shows at the same time while watching a third show previously taped, pause/rewind live TV (can't wait for football this fall!). As an afterthought, wanted to ask: Are there lots of shows or features on geocaching? I've been reading these boards for about a month now and don't recall seeing any references to a show - aside from maybe some local TV news stories. What channels would these features be on? Discovery or TLC? ------------------------------------------------------------ I am Lothar, King of the Hill people. I have many tales to tell.... 24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? 19. Here in Lincoln, we have one course just outside of town that has GPSrs on each cart. I think it would be cool to take that one step further and be able to download golf course info to a handheld GPSr so you could take advantage of the capability, but without the cart. I haven't played the one course that has it so I can't provide an opinion. Personally, I think I would really like it since I'm a crappy golfer anyway. Doubt it would really improve my game at all but it would be pretty cool. ------------------------------------------------------------ I am Lothar, King of the Hill people. 20. quote:Managed to make it home and then took out all the beer in the refrigerator and proceeded to drink it before it got warm Thank God someone was being responsible! This whole episode reminds me of the October '97 snow/ice storm we had in Lincoln (& all of SE Nebraska). Due to the weight of the snow and ice, many very large tree branches and power lines were downed. People in newer neighborhoods never lost power for second while most of the city lost power for days. We were without power in our house for 5 days. ------------------------------------------------------------ I am Lothar, King of the Hill people. 21. So far in my limited experience I have used maps. Primarily because I don't have a ton of free-time to cache so when I do, I want to maximise my time. The best way for me to do that has been to plot caches on a map so I can see them all and plan a good route. Once in the general area, I only use my GPSr. ------------------------------------------------------------ I am Lothar, King of the Hill people. 22. Hard to say if I would stop altogether. I do like the statistical portion as it is somewhat of a badge of honor. However, it wouldn't be all that hard to develop a personal tracking system if I needed to. I do like being able to see other people's stats as it kind of adds an unofficial competitive piece to the activity and it gives me something to shoot for. It also helps to add to a player's credibility in the forums. Are they someone (like me) who may have an opinion on something but doesn't have a whole lot of experience to rely on or are they a very experienced cacher with an informed opinion. It can work the other way too. If someone has been caching since 2001 and has seen first-hand the evolution of the activity, they may be somewhat jaded. Relative "newbies" however may be less biased on certain issues (see virtual vs. traditional cache arguments). Kind of a long answer to the questions but in short, I don't think I would stop altogether but I think it might lose some of its appeal. ------------------------------------------------------------ I am Lothar, King of the Hill people. 23. JUst to beat a dead or dying horse, I flew last week and on both ends of the round trip I had my GPSr in my carryon and nobody batted an eye. I guess in today's security sensitive environment I'm not sure that is such a good thing but I imagine it was carefully reviewed going through the x-ray machine as this was the weekend after the big news about fears of bombs and other explosives being hidden in electronic devices by terrorists. Unfortunately I didn't get a window seat so I couldn't see how the GPSr worked in the plane. I didn't even think of it as a potential problem any more than a CD player or other walkman. My brother, on the other hand, got a pretty intense once-over as he mistakenly left a 3/4 inch trailer hitch receiver pin in his carryon. It was nothing more than a harmless 4 inch piece of steel but its not something you see being carried onto an airplane every day. ------------------------------------------------------------ I am Lothar, King of the Hill people. 24. I'm no attorney, nor do I play one on TV but I've always been under the impression that property owners are liable for any injuries that occur on their property, regardless of whether the injured person was invited onto the property or not, and regardless as to if they were there legally or not. There may also be some negligence issues involved as well. For example, if I fail to remove ice from my front steps, I may be held more liable if someone falls than if my steps were perfectly clear of ice. Not sure if there is a real distinction there or not. I could be, and probably am way off. ------------------------------------------------------------ I am Lothar, King of the Hill people. Jeremy himself has recently told people not to expect virtuals to be approved. If that's not effectively a ban, then I don't know what is. George Just a point of clarification. I was not saying that noone was screaming to have virtuals banned. It is abundantly clear that many people are. My comment was referencing the Ford/Chevy or Garmin/Magellen debates. Chevy lovers aren't screaming for Fords to be banned. They just like to pee on them. Maybe those who would like to ban virtuals need to adopt this as their logo: ------------------------------------------------------------ I am Lothar, King of the Hill people.
