  1. I need a good quality one (preferably Garmin brand) and very cheap. thanks in advance ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+
  2. GPS is no longer for sale. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+
  3. The Legend is a very popular model. It's a good little unit from what I hear. Personally though, for that price range, I would go with the Garmin III+ because of the quad helix antenna and more rugged casing. You can find a used one in excellent condition for about $150. It has a basemap with roads and has some memory for uploading maps, although not too much memory. Choosing a Legend though is a healthy decision, and I think most people would agree. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+

  6. quote:Originally posted by dzavetsky: someone said IU have to have my V "hardened"...is this true??? ANyone?? DZ No, I think you're thinking of the etrex's. They are known to have display problems if they undergo lots of vibration. The III's and the V's are built a lot stronger in this aspect. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+ [This message was edited by volks_ev71 on August 16, 2003 at 07:27 PM.]
  7. dzavetsky, I wouldn't even worry about metroguide. You are getting a V soon, and it comes with city-select. It's just as good, if not better than metro. and just for your info, the V has plenty of memory for regular use. ----------------------------------------------------------- N38 49.027 W120 01.064 Garmin V
  8. How many of you actually use it for geocaching? If you don't, what do you use instead? ----------------------------------------------------------- N38 49.027 W120 01.064 Garmin V
  9. Garmin GPS III+ You can find them used in excellent condition on ebay in that price range. ----------------------------------------------------------- N38 49.027 W120 01.064 Garmin V [This message was edited by volks_ev71 on August 16, 2003 at 03:48 PM.]
  10. quote:Originally posted by leatherman:_Auto routing is a novelty. Don't waste your money on one novel feature._ There are many more features to choose from. It's almost an essential feature for a true road worthy GPS system. I think I would consider built-in electronic compasses and barometers more of a novelty. I mean, the GPS can still give you direction, and it can still give you a reasonable altitude for navigation. ----------------------------------------------------------- N38 49.027 W120 01.064 Garmin V
  11. quote:Originally posted by dzavetsky: I just hope that the City Select software is as good and detailed and ACCURATE as the Metroguide stuff......and I also hope that the City Select software will allow me to fit all the maps I need into the V's 19mb..... So, SHOULD I be looking for the older version of Metroguide?? Just curious...is there a way to turn off autorouting for just certain maps one would load?? City select is very detailed. I believe it is essentially the same as metroguide, but with autoroutable maps. ----------------------------------------------------------- N38 49.027 W120 01.064 Garmin V
  12. Well, the prices are not too far apart between roads and rec and metroguide, so you would probably be better off getting Metro. Besides, if you upgrade later on to a unit that has autorouting, you will be happy you spent the extra money. ----------------------------------------------------------- N38 49.027 W120 01.064 Garmin V
  13. You made a very wise decision getting the GPS V. You will enjoy it sooo much. Even opening the box is a blast ----------------------------------------------------------- N38 49.027 W120 01.064 Garmin V
  14. I plan on getting the neoprene case for mine. Despite the V's excellent build quality and ruggedness, I just don't want to take a chance of damaging it. About the maps, I'm not sure about the updates. ----------------------------------------------------------- N38 49.027 W120 01.064 Garmin V
  15. nah.. i'm not interested, just curious. ----------------------------------------------------------- N38 49.027 W120 01.064 Garmin V
  16. Autorouting takes a LOT of memory. I had no idea until I loaded my local area. I live in lake tahoe and just the local area with autorouting selected takes up 5.52 mb! My GPS V has 19 mb, but still... 8mb is probably fine for a legend since you don't need auto-routing. ----------------------------------------------------------- N38 49.027 W120 01.064 Garmin V
  17. The satellite geometry has a large effect on the elevation readings. On the III+, there's actually a readout that tells you the geometry quality (called DOP) which was pretty cool. In short, if the satellites you have a lock on are very close together, or low in the sky, you can count on the elevation being a pretty far off. The ideal setup would be to have all of the satellites spread out at about 45 degrees from the horizon. ----------------------------------------------------------- N38 49.027 W120 01.064 Garmin V
  18. It would be the most ideal application really. The eMap is mostly a driving GPS, and is able to hold oodles of map memory, making it perfect for auto-routing. Why haven't they done it? ----------------------------------------------------------- N38 49.027 W120 01.064 Garmin V [This message was edited by volks_ev71 on August 15, 2003 at 07:44 PM.]
  19. quote:Originally posted by Neo_Geo:ERRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrt (sound of tires skidding)! If you're gonna do any traveling at all, then consider the Garmin http://www.garmin.com/products/emap/It can hold 16X the map data than the Legend! I bought a Legend, but then when I loaded 8MB of MetroGuide5 data into it, I was very disappointed! Don't get me wrong - I love my Legend!!! It totally rocks! But, if I go on any trips of any length, then it simply falls short in the map-carrying department! I bought an eMap & a 128MB data card for the long hauls, and use the Legend for local caching. I'd have to disagree. It may be able to hold lots of map data, but it's not the best GPS for driving. Get a GPS V so you can take advantage of auto-routing. Unless you're on a budget, it's the best GPS out there IMO. You can also get it used on ebay for much cheaper prices. ----------------------------------------------------------- N38 49.027 W120 01.064 Garmin V
  20. I agree with totem. Give the GPS some time. ----------------------------------------------------------- N38 49.027 W120 01.064 Garmin V
  21. You should have no problem with the dash mount... There are three different adhesive pad types that garmin sends you in the package. One is a "repositionable" pad that is almost like silly puddy. There is also a "permanent" pad that is made to stay on your dash forever. Lastly, there is a velcro strip that attaches to the bottom of your GPS and then to your dash. The "repositionable" pad is what I chose. Its extremely sticky and sticks to even curved dashes well. The only thing I don't like about the mount is the bracket that clips on to the GPS. It's a really tight fit and takes a lot of pressure to get the notches to clip into place. ----------------------------------------------------------- N38 49.027 W120 01.064 Garmin V
  22. It doesn't... you must tell the GPS that you want to detour. The menu on the route page has an option for "detour". Hit that and it asks you how long of a detour you want... I hit "2 miles" and it planned a new route that ended up about 2 miles up from where I detoured from on the same road! It was soo cool! ----------------------------------------------------------- N38 49.027 W120 01.064 Garmin V [This message was edited by volks_ev71 on August 15, 2003 at 12:28 PM.]
  23. You have made a wise decision dzavetsky! You will absolutely love the V. I just got mine two days ago and keep finding all these cool things it can do. By the way, did you get the deluxe package, or just the regular V?? ----------------------------------------------------------- N38 49.027 W120 01.064 Garmin V
  24. I had to go to the market today so I decided to bring the G5 with me. On the way back, I decided to take the back way to my house when I came upon road construction on the street... I had never used the detour function on the G5 before so I thought this would be good practice. Before I even got close to the work site, it had planned another route for me that was completely accurate! The distances were all precise and the route made sense. This is one smart little gps. ----------------------------------------------------------- N38 49.027 W120 01.064 Garmin V
  25. Yes it is. I sent you an email. ----------------------------------------------------------- N38 49.027 W120 01.064 Garmin V
