quote:Originally posted by Team Shibby:I have used POI's twice since I have owned mine. Both times it worked perfect. We woke up a little late on a road trip and wanted McDonalds breakfast, so I did a quick search for the nearest one and it routed us to the front door with about 5 minutes to spare before they started serving lunch (10:30am go figure, who eats lunch at 10:30 in the morning!) We then used it to look for the nearest Wal*Mart and it routed us there just as easily. Now I do know that not all POI's are up to date. As a matter of fact almost every business it lists around my home has been long gone for at least 10 years or more, so I know not to trust it for small mom & pop type places, only major retailers and restraunts. You have to take them with a grain of salt and remember not to rely on them to always be accurate. If you email garmin on the issue, they will ask you to send them the information so they can forward it to their vendor for the next release. I would do this on one condition, that they send me a free copy once it is released! I am not going to do the legwork for them and then hand them another $100 each time they release something new Kar Excellent point... I know now not to look for the "mom and pop" type businesses. Also, I find that more of the businesses located in rural areas are less accurate due to the lower traffic. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+ -

quote:Originally posted by Rubberhead: Volks_EV71, I take it that you're happy with the GPS V. I'd say most people who own V's love them to death, me included. Its everything I've always wanted in a GPS. Haven't actually seen a Vista in person, but I definitely considered it before I bought the V. I do like the Vista's barometer and compass idea, but auto-routing is really something I can use because I travel a lot. That and the fact that I'm partial to the III+/V GPS chassis. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+ -
...not to rely 100% on the POI's. I'm sure you knew that by now, but I had my first hand experience today on my trip from Tahoe to Palm Springs. I didn't need gas at the time, but I thought i'd try out the POI database to find a gas station. Pushed a few buttons, and it found a gas station about 6 miles away! Cool I thought. I followed the nav directions it gave me, but when it said I "arrived at destination", the gas station was about 1000 feet down the road from where the GPS said it was. Not only that, when I eventually found the gas station (texaco), it was out of business. Looked like it had been closed for about 10 years! (good thing I didn't need the gas badly) I do have the newest version of city-select too. I guess Garmin just doesn't update it very often. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+ [This message was edited by volks_ev71 on August 19, 2003 at 07:14 PM.]

Try using the detour feature. It's pretty awesome. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+ -
quote:Originally posted by Cactusjeep:When downloading maps to my V the GPS will hang. Mapsource will give message "GPS not responding", but the GPS will still show to be downloading. It's done this since new. GPS will not respond to any key on unit except OFF, turn unit back on and all maps are there. Mapsource should turn GPS off when finished downloading and for some reason won't. I have latest updates on unit and mapsource. Any ideas? "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy" Benjamin Franklin I had the same problem today (version 2.30). Sometimes I download the maps with the unit in test mode so I can bypass all of the confirmation screens on the usual startup. I find that I get more problems doing it this way. The maps downloaded fine when the unit was on though. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+

First of all, the Legend does not have an electronic compass. Secondly, I believe the only unit with expandable memory in the Garmin lineup is the eMap. Not sure about Magellan and Lowrance though... My recommendation would be a GPS V, or a GPSMAP 76S. The 76S has the electronic compass and barometer, but doesn't have auto-routing. The GPS V on the other hand DOES have auto-routing (which BTW works very well!), but lacks compass and barometer. The V has 19 mb of memory (not upgradable), and the 76S has 24 mb. Just remember to aim high because you will likely want to upgrade again in the future. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+

I could see a purpose in getting rid of it on the maps for non-autorouting gps's, but I think its pretty nice to be able to get directions to places to eat, sleep and get gas in towns I don't know to well. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+ -
What a great thread, since I own both! Quality construction and ergonomics of the III+/V's are why these gps's are my fave. As for tips, I don't really have any. Get a case for it! ...and rechargable batteries. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+ [This message was edited by volks_ev71 on August 18, 2003 at 06:00 PM.]

Magellan Sportrac or Garmin Legend
Tahoe Skier5000 replied to boomer9090's topic in GPS technology and devices
I'd go with the Legend. I don't know jack about Magellan, so I couldn't give you any tips... but I did own a Legend once and it was a nice unit. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+ -

Individual forums for each model of GPS. I know it sounds crazy now, but it would be nice to have a specialized forum to go to to share tips, information and general talk on your particular GPS unit. Would you be interested in it? ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+ [This message was edited by volks_ev71 on August 17, 2003 at 08:11 PM.]
