  1. ah... the dreaded screen problem. hope you get it fixed. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+
  2. you'd be more lucky running into a purple elephant that is serving pizza in Marin county, CA. good luck getting it back, but I would start looking for an alternative GPS. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+
  3. All you will ever want to know about the WAAS system ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+
  4. I had that happen yesterday with my Garmin V. Out of nowhere, the GPS said "Poor Coverage". I checked the satellite page and 9 sats were still being tracked with almost full signal. I'm almost positive its a bug in the software because even if the GPS did lose all satellite signals, the GPS allows for a little time (maybe a minute or so) before it displays the poor coverage message. This is eerily similar to the "loss of external power source" bug the eTrex Legends used to have. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+
  5. Did you have a clear wide open sky on the top of your building? If so, it sounds like your unit might be bad. Try this though... On the satellite page, open the menu and hit "new location", and then hit "automatic" when it prompts you. This will re-initialize the gps and collect new almanac data. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+ [This message was edited by volks_ev71 on August 23, 2003 at 03:50 PM.]
  6. I was caching with the III+ today and noticed that its fairly insensitive to movement compared to the V. With power saver OFF, it takes about 6-10 feet before the speed starts to register. Once it does start, it has no problem with changes in speed or direction. It's only that inital start from stop. On the other hand, the V is VERY sensitive... just stick your arm out, and it starts registering! Do other III+ owners notice this?? ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+
  7. quote:Originally posted by Team Shibby:They are free to download but they do not include changes made to roads, it only updates the Mapsource program. So if the program is what is causing the errors, they may have the problem fixed so long as it has been pointed out to them. Don't expect new roads to suddenly appear, cause they will not. Kar Actually, I was talking about upgrades for the city-select basemap. I know you can do it for a cost, but when does the next one come out? ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+
  8. quote:Originally posted by dzavetsky:I had emailed my map errors to tech support at Garmin and he said they update every 12-18 months, and that the last update was april of 2002....so we are due...I wonderwhat THAT will cost.... quote:Originally posted by Tail of Two Cachers:I've found that it doesn't handle one way streets too well. Other than that, its been fine. But it is a software/maps issue. I'll definitely upgrade them as they come out.. When do those updates come out to us?? How do we get them? ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+
  9. good story! Remember, when autorouting, the GPS gives you an advanced warning of the upcoming turn, usually about 1.5 miles out from it. It will beep, and then show you a picture of the turn with instructions. That will go away after a few seconds, and then once you are about 500 feet from the turn, the gps beeps again and shows you a picture along with distance from the turn, and instructions once again. The important thing is to pay attention to the distances given. More importantly, make your turn into the turning lane during the warning message, so you don't have to try to jam into place at the last second. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+
  10. been doing some research and it looks like magellan doesn't have an autolocate feature like garmin for initialization. Is this true?? Do you have to tell the gps where you are before you can start using it?? ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+
  11. I'd have to say the most popular gps under $200 is probably the Legend. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+

  13. The V is awesome! Its a great all around GPS. Autorouting works very well. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+ [This message was edited by volks_ev71 on August 21, 2003 at 08:23 PM.]
  14. I finally answered my question about this... I read this article and wheels started turning. In short: the gps calibrates itself! XO drift doesn't mean anything bad with your GPS. It's based off a table of correction values the GPS stores at each operating temperature. The beauty of it is, no matter how screwed up your oscillator drift is (long or no acquisition times), just use Autolocate to correct it. Once a lock has been made, the unit automatically corrects the table with the proper measurement and the unit is restored to optimal performance. here is the article ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+ [This message was edited by volks_ev71 on August 21, 2003 at 10:03 PM.]
  15. Thats a borderline good price. Figure you'll spend $17 on the cable (from ebay), thats only $102. Still about $35 lower than most new ones. Is it in good condition?? ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+
  16. I always end up resetting it... oops edit: probably around 25-30,000 miles though. It's approaching 6 years old now and it was used almost every day. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+ [This message was edited by volks_ev71 on August 21, 2003 at 07:13 PM.]
  17. does it just keep drifting off into infiniti or will it eventually stop? I haven't noticed a drop in performance, or accuracy. In fact today, I got down to 12 feet with the III+! ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+
  18. My III+ on the test screen says it has a XO drift of -20.31. Is that a bad value? I understand that it has something to do with the crystal oscillators or whatever. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+
  19. quote:Originally posted by leatherman:I'll stay away from the Auto-routing. While your comparing these two. The V comes with everything. Vehicle mount, map CD, 12volt adapter, and data cable. The 76s only comes with the data cable. If you buy all the stuff for the 76s you will pay more than you will for the V. Hmm.. http://www.geocaching.com/profile/default.asp?A=39197http://img.Groundspeak.com/user/39197_3600.jpg _POWDER!!!!!!_ you're V-aphobic arent you leather? ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+
  20. I haven't experienced any mess-ups in the autorouting yet. Although... some of the roads in my area are new, and I think Garmin tried to predict where the new roads would be ahead of time, but the construction companies made some modifications to the final road, making the city-select version pretty inaccurate. (i.e. wrong turns in the wrong places). Overall though, the V is about 95% accurate for me. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+
  21. Go with the V. Autorouting is an incredible feature. That and the overall versatility of the V has the 76s beat in many ways. #1 of which would be size. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+
  22. Pertaining to the V Use your head when it comes time to fill up on gas.. don't rely on the POI database to bail you out. Always respect da V! ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+
  23. Sounds like a bug to me. I haven't experienced that with my V yet... You should report it to Garmin. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+
  24. Are we talking about XO drift here?? If so, my GPS III+ says it has a XO drift of "-20.62" Is that good? or bad? ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+
  25. quote:Originally posted by HitsMan and Chris:I'm not being condescending. I just set a price I was comfortable with (which is significantly below what I paid when I bought it 4 months ago). You don't have to buy it, if it's out of your range, or you find better options elsewhere. I'm expecting the final auction price (based on bidding) to be less, and the reserve is significantly less than the Buy It Now price. You would know that if you bid on the item. If no one thinks my reserve price is reasonable, I'm the only one who loses by wasting eBay fees. I'm not sure why you are so angry. If you're not interested, just don't bid. No need to have an argument about it. noone is angry... trust me, we have more of a life than that The problem is, you are never going to sell the GPS if the price of your used GPS is the same as a brand spankin new one. fact of economics ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+
