Btw, the V looks like a cool gps, id go for it, but its way over my budget . Try searching_ut's webpage. 2. I agree... take it and get a refund immediately. No sense in keeping it and having it fail on the trail when you need it. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V
  3. You'd think magellan could have just added a few lines of code in the program to have the GPS Status display switch between "EPE" and "Averaging" rather than just staying on one indication. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V

It never was subjected to extremely high temperatures but I hauled it all over South America, Zimbabwe and parts of China with no failure of the rubber parts. While removing it ... it was securely attached. Re-attachment was done using the residual adhesive on the band. I have a rubber/plastic adhesive that I'm keeping to use if it starts to loosen up. The trick was the vinyl tape to seal it from water ... but still let the buttons function ... and keep the adhesive gunk out. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Co-founder of the _"NC/VA GEO-HOG ASSOCIATION"_ ... when you absolutely have to find it first! yeah sorry about that hawk-eye ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V
  6. First off, gpsgeek is super quick with the shipping... i got the case in less than 2 days from end of auction. (and thats USPS mail ) anyway... The case is extremely TIGHT! (in the literal sense) Its hard getting the case on the gps the first time. It loosens up the next couple of times. Going with the theme of neoprene, installing the case is like putting on a wet suit that is a wee bit too small. (PITA!) The case looks much better in person than it does in the pictures from the website. The zipper is pretty heavy duty, and the screen fits well around the buttons and the display. My biggest, but correctable pet peeve is that the data port is covered. You can fix this quickly with a pair of scissors. The gilson patch is right over the data port, and its just the right size. Just cut the patch out and you have access to the data port. All things considered here, good purchase. I paid less than $20 total "out the door". ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V
  7. I think the fact of the matter remains that WAAS is kinda useless anyways for most GPS use. Good for zeroing in on cache locations, as long as the hider had WAAS enabled, but otherwise, it slows the map drawing rate. I can still get a good 13 ft accuracy without waas which I can easily live with. Battery life means nothing to me now that I have rechargeables, but GPS performance does. I would prefer faster map draws, rather than 3-4 feet more accuracy. JMHO ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V
  8. just a pointer for you... dont take it the wrong way... you can get a brand spankin' new V deluxe pacakge for $339 on GPSCITY.com... that includes all regions unlocked on CS. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V
  9. figure the average size for an average topo map is about 250-300kb. thats 64 maps on a 19mb system @300kb per map 81 maps on a 24mb system @ 300kb per map 436 maps on a 128mb system @ 300kb per map ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V [This message was edited by volks_ev71 on August 29, 2003 at 01:30 PM.]
  10. what gets me is that my Streets and Trip 2001 is much more up to date than City-Select 4.01 ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V [This message was edited by volks_ev71 on August 29, 2003 at 01:14 PM.]

  12. Now you should send that instruction file to Garmin, so they can fix the problem too ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V [This message was edited by volks_ev71 on August 29, 2003 at 10:18 AM.]
  13. I don't think you can turn WAAS off on Magellans. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V
  14. I'd say mapping is almost essential in some cases. 1. You will most likely want to upgrade to a unit with a map in the future anyways. Why blow $200 on a unit without one now and then have to shell out another $200 or $300 later. 2. When out doing some serious geocaching or camping miles from civilization, the map will give you something to refer to when you get lost. Without it, you better hope you punched in the waypoints to places near you on the gps. Not only that, the maps give you roads to go to, shows you shorelines, and any towns or cities. It can seriously save your arse when lost. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V
  15. The eTrex GPS's do have relatively weak antennas. I owned a Venture and a Legend before my V and there is a monumental difference in not only reception, but sensitivity with the V (and in particular, the quad-helix). The patch antennas found in the eTrex's should work fine for normal geocaching in areas without a lot of foliage, but are otherwise limited. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V
  16. Im sure a lot of you are familiar with GPSgeek from ebay, and I just bought the neoprene case for my V. It looks pretty good... anyone have one that cares to share? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3042891251&category=4668&rd=1 ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V
  17. hold it upside down... you should get some excellent reception there ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V
  18. Go for a mapping unit. You will most likely want to upgrade in the near future anyway. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V
  19. I got a great deal at target... it came with the 4 AA Energizer 2100 mAH and the charger for $17.00! Will these work fine for the V? ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V
  20. eh... i don't really care anymore. It's small enough and doesn't effect viewing the display in anyway. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V

  22. i noticed while I was cleaning the glass on the V. didn't notice it before, but now i do. anyone else with this? ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V [This message was edited by volks_ev71 on August 25, 2003 at 01:47 PM.]
  23. Both are great. Since I'm biased towards Garmin, I'd have to lean a little more towards the Legend. Although, for structural rigidity, hardware quality and reliability, I'd go with the Magellan. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V
  24. I get flawless coverage under trees with my V. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+
  25. I believe you want City-Select. The difference being, city navigator is made for the Streetpilot, while the city-select is made for the GPS V. As far as different software details, I don't know. From what garmins website shows, they both look exactly the same. ----------------------------------------------------------- Garmin V Garmin III+
