  1. Has anyone had any luck with transferring geocaches to a Garmin Overlander? I've tried using The Garmin Explore website, the BaseCamp program, the geocaching.com transfer applications, and EasyGPS program. Nothing seems to work. I'm quite flummoxed....
  2. 570. On the E.T. Trail in Nevada. And for clarification, we stopped at each cache, replaced the log and container with a stamped the log and container, rotating about 6 containers between 2 people driving and jumping. The best per hour via this method was 72 caches.
  3. I enjoy them and would like to see them return. Yes, some of them are absurd, but for the most part, I enjoy the challenge of "the hunt" that they present. It forces me to go to new places and experience new things that I haven't done before, which is what I've always liked about caching. I also find that the cachers that place and go after challenge caches are those cachers that I tend to hang out with anyways. A challenge cache beats a K-Mart LPC any day of the week... which I'll still eventually go after...but it won't be as much fun....
  4. Slightly tangent to the topic but in the same vein: I do know where geocachers helped to find and save a missing person. A few years ago, a geocacher came to Hawaii from eastern Europe to visit and geocache. He was an experienced mountain climber, but Hawaii mountains can be quite unforgiving... He went missing for several days and the authorities were called in to search for him. Cachers were able to figure out where he last was and find the last cache he signed, immensely helping to reduce the search area. he was found a few hours later and airevac'd out.
  5. Tipsie and I have a teardrop trailer that we roamed around with in Florida, Alabama and Georgia. We'll move up to an Airstream (or bigger) as we get older and need more "amenities". Once you're on the road, check out Gulf State Park in Alabama. It's an RVer's heaven surrounded by TONS of caches!
  6. I'm pretty sure you can set your RV up in Rachel, Which is about the half way point in the series: http://www.littlealeinn.com/. Very nice town and the people love geocachers. Bring plenty of extra gas for your geo-mobile though. We also highly advise a night in the Mizpah Hotel in Tonopah as you travel west. Great, old hotel with history and good food! And regardless, of the "numbers debate" as related to geocaching, this is an adventure you'll never forget! And seriously, don't drive at night! You don't see those cows until they're right up on you! -Marcas Found-
  7. I've owned just about every Garmin that is out there. The 62 series are the best for accuracy but the Oregon is the best overall workhorse that Garmin has made. I would go as far up that line as you can comfortably afford.
  8. My simple rule: If I get to GZ and look for the cache and cannot find it, then it is a DNF. Period. Dot. It could be 2 seconds because muggles showed up or 2 hours of extensive searching, it doesn't matter to me. It's just part of the fun of geocaching. I'll admit that I love finding caches that others before me couldn't and vise versa, have had others look for caches just because I couldn't find it. It's just a part of the game that makes it that much more fun to me.
  9. billdavidsaurus, your hunch is most likely correct. This specific cacher has been banned and has managed to pop up with alias cache accounts since then. He has a special distaste for southern NJ geocachers (SJG) since several of the old head puzzle cachers in SJG beat him at his own game years ago. Frodo has more info than I do on this specific subject...
  10. My 2 cents: - I don't put much stock in a DNF log from a new cacher. - Too many assumptions are being made in the N/A log above. The original cache could very well be there. I don't think anyone is in a position to say otherwise. If an experienced cacher had DNF'd it, I would have reason to wonder a bit more. - Expecting the CO to go out and check on the cache after just 1 DNF, just to satisfy the curiosity of the vast majority of us who are going to potentially "find" this cache vicariously through another cacher seems a bit much to me. - I think that "4.5" just disproved that time doesn't necessarily mean the container will have definitely deteriorated by now. - I can't wrap my head around what archiving this cache is supposed to do. By archiving it, what are we preserving and/or correcting?
  11. I'll add my 2 cents; To me, geocaching is all about the experiences I've enjoyed over the years. That could be a a P.T., an FTF, a 5/5 cache, etc, etc, it doesn't matter to me. The experience is what is most important. To me, those who share that exact experience at that exact moment should be able to log a smiley. Tipsie and I have done the E.T. We swapped driving and jumping duties every 50 caches BUT we stopped AND found every single cache in the series (we replaced only 1 that we physically saw get muggled). I guess the numbers are a bonus but to us, it was about the experience. Could we do it? Did we have the logistics nailed down? Enjoying the amazing views (we took tons of amazing photos along the way). Having a great time together. And lastly and most important, just having fun! I've also been on day long hikes and 4x4 excursions going after just 1 cache. 1 comes to mind that was 4 miles back in the swamps. It took a group of 40ish cachers 2 hours to get there and once there, only 1 guy was "volunteered" to climb 50 feet up into a tree to retrieve the cache. So, the same thought process plays out: should the dude who climbed the tree or the person who jumped from the car on a P.T. be the only person to sign the log? If I was there to experience the thrill of the hunt for that specific cache then I have no issue with logging a smiley.
  12. I've got the Oregon and Montana. I'd go with the Oregon 550. The camera seems kind of "gucci" at first but really does come in handy for quick pics of multi coords, trackables, etc.
  13. Or if you want to save time and probably money, google "Davinci code DVD and cryptex". They offered a cryptex with the movie for a while. They're still available on eBay for less than $20.
  14. I've been mulling over addressing a specific subject that kind of has my "knickers in a twist" the last couple of days over a disclaimer appearing on a specific CO's new caches. The disclaimer reads (sorry, its long): The Disclaimer:
  15. Bump...it seems the Aloha thread fell of the west & southwest page...figured I'd keep it alive for those planning on coming to the islands.
  16. Although not in your local area, I stumbled across this thread and figured I'd offer my 2 cents. I'm pretty picky about my cases as well. I even went as far as making my own from a generic Garmin GPS case that I found on line but it didn't work too well. I wasn't too keen on the way the GizzMoCase looked either but since it was the only thing out there I gave it a try....and I love it! It's not as bulky as I thought it would be, does a killer job of protecting the GPSr and easy to get the GPSr out of and into which is a bonus when using my Garmin Montana car mount!
  17. Hi Marcas Found, I would gladly go with ya and refind the caches again . Which ones were you planning to get? Well....just about all of them. I'm slowly picking off the ridge caches but the longer ones (7-15 miles) are the ones I just don't feel comfortable doing alone......for obvious reasons.
  18. Looking for nuts like me! Hello all! I'm on the Oahu trails just about every weekend. But there are some areas/trails that I just do not feel comfortable doing by myself. There's got to be some other cachers out there just "chompin' at the bit" to go after some of the further out caches. So if you are so inclined and looking for a hiking partner, let me know! 19. ....topic moved to Hawai'i thread.
  20. ...I'm a little confused. I think it's a good design but your pic is square. Is this going on a round coin? If so, it would seem to me that there are some voids that may look odd. You may be able to move the non-island items outside of the body to fill the voids on a round coin. And what is going on the other side of the coin? -MF-
  21. You shouldn't have any issues. I have people "dipping" their TBs in my caches well after they've logged them. And you were already there, there is no rule/time frame stating how soon you have to log a visit anyways. Great! Thank you I submitted my first cache today...I'm so excited for it to get published, I was really worried about my coordinates but I checked and checked and it looks correct on the map. Hopefully when it is published and people start looking I don't get comments about how it's 8793284wufzxknflkj off the GZ hehe I did this cache yesterday. The coords were a little soft but given the terrain around GZ they were fine. If the coords on any cache get me within 30ish feet I'm happy! Also, I would not try to compare your coords and your placement with any online map. There may be errors in whatever map you're looking at. Your best test of the coords is to walk away from the cache about 50-100 feet then follow the GPSr back to it. If I'm within 10 feet, I'm happy when I place a cache.

  23. I see a bunch of them every weekend (Sundays are usually better) at the Aloha Bowl swap meet.
  24. Trimble has its geocache navigator available for a monthly subscription. If you have a GPS enabled BB, you can their site for compatibility. We use it as a back up to our GPSr to get current logs/data on a cache.
