  1. quote:Originally posted by Faust: Wow, those are some great ideas, but they really fall outside the bounds of GeoBuddy's core functionality. I really like the idea of a Geocaching Mobile Companion, though. There are a lot of us who use Palms as well as our GPSRs, so something like this would be useful. Maybe the GeoBuddy Mobile Suite. Hmmm... -E -- N35°32.981 W98°34.631

  4. Regardless if the GPS track shows that the receiver was 100 miles away, how can you prove that you were with it? -E -- N35°32.981 W98°34.631

  6. It's nice knowing that the GPS is oriented the same way I am in track up mode, but I can't stand for the display to be updated all the time. This is on the color StreetPilot III. When I'm searching for a cache in a park area, I set it to point the arrow in the direction I want to go and I don't care about the orientation. If I had topo maps loaded, I might use track up. -E -- N35°32.981 W98°34.631
  7. quote:This month in "Journal of Trauma" published a study from the Harvard School of Public Health... Paul, with all due respect, this is a load of crap. The authors go into the study knowing what they want to publish and make certain they get the numbers they want. It's a political issue, not a scientific one. Researchers do this all the time with other dangerous items like SUVs, eggs, coffee, and cell phones. I understand that Harvard is a fine institution, but being in Massachusetts, it's doubtful that its researchers are truly unbiased. I don't accept the results of this study any more than I would a study published by the NRA. I own hunting weapons and several handguns. I _am not_ a member of the NRA because they frighten me as much as the anti-gun lobby. I keep my weapons in a locked steel cabinet with trigger locks on all of them. I plan to introduce my son to responsible gun use when he is ready. Until that time, the guns are unloaded and inaccessable. Having said all that, I rarely take anything with me for protection beyond a heavy stick. Most of the caches I've visited are in city or regional parks and I have little fear for my safety from other humans. If I have to worry about my safety or the safety of my family while geocaching, I'll give it up. -E -- N35°32.981 W98°34.631

  9. quote:Originally posted by mrcpu: I've noticed that while GeoBuddy is compatible with EasyGPS, it is not entirly compatible with EasyGPS's big brother (registered version) called Panterra. I would love to be compatible with Panterra and ExpertGPS. The binary format is more complex than the others. I need to ping Dan and see if he minds sharing some insight. quote:The one big thing is the Symbol Field. I can set my Symbols very nicely in GB but when I save the file their lost. I thought I had that fixed. Are you working with version 1.0.19? If so, what format are you saving as? quote:Could GB2 support Panterra or the EasyGPS/Panterra XML format that topografix invented? XML, definitely. Binary files? Only if they are easy to reverse or I get some assistance. -E -- N35°32.981 W98°34.631
  10. No driver needed. The way I do it is Download a bunch of .loc files off of our favorite website Drop all the .loc files onto GeoBuddy Merge them all into one file and save as .wpt Import into Garmin MapSource. Download to GPSR Chances are, you don't have MapSource, so replace steps 3 and 4 with 3. Merge them all into one and save as .loc 4. Open with EasyGPS If you are thinking about MapSource, MetroGuide 4.0 is far superior to the others. -E -- N35°32.981 W98°34.631
  11. Here are the lists of feature requests from the old forums, updated to current status and with a few of my own feature requests thrown in. From Peter Scholtz' list (some removed that are no longer relevant or implemented in some form or fashion)... 1. Maps outside the USA 2. Statistics 3. Chat/IRC 4. Edit cache logs 5. Search 5.1 Type 5.2 Keyword search to include cache details (Search engine) 5.3 Distance 5.4 Date hidden 5.5 Date found 5.6 Number of logs 5.7 Direction 5.8 Difficulty 5.9 Terrain 5.10 Size 5.11 Town/County 5.12 Cacher 5.15 Provinces (like the states for the US) 5.16 Multiple zip codes 6. Search results 6.1 Show total cache logs (for each type) 6.3 Distance by road 6.4 City 7. Recent cache logs, sort by state or user 9. Logbook password protect 10. Longer cookie expiry date / Automatic login 11. Optional spelling checker/preview of cache report, cache logging and forum posts 12. Download a database file 13. Able to select notification option for forum topics 21. Geocache hardware products 21.1 Auto picture upload when a cache is opened 21.2 USB cache visit logger 22. Cache details 22.1 Recommended approach direction 22.2 Replacement for difficulty/terrain five star system 22.3 Date range/lifespan 25. Picture gallery 26. Updated zip codes 27. MAPS, Maps, maps ... From Choberiba's posting... Using "VC" for virtual cache, "MC" for micro cache, "EC" for event cache Wheelchair accessible icon A 'mark' button for messages so that they can be either downloaded as text or printed without all the other comments Abilty to change "not found" and "found" to "other". Additional frown choices (Problem) (Baffled) Omit caches I've found from the results of a search would be handy. From there it's a short step to omitting those found by any arbitrary user, and another short step to use a list of users... Who is "watching" my caches? Edit picture names and captions after they have been submitted. A search in which we specify the lat/lon of the upper left and lower right bounds of the rectangle. Two of these suggestions appear well suited for a marriage: a downloadable database, and searching for the nearest caches on a route How 'bout allowing cache partners to post joint logs that will put the tally their finds to their separate home pages? What if we could give feedback on difficulty? I want a ROUTE search I'd love to see the feature of including a "codeword" in your cache and making it required to log a successful find at geocaching.com. Myself, I would like to be able to highlight a road system and see all the caches along side it. I would love to know which cache is the "must-visit". Whether there is a weighted system or local "guides" who give their personal opinion, I don't care. How about multiple encrypted hints. Sometimes you want to give hints starting with easier ones and progressing to more specific ones as needed. That way, you don't give away the "whole ball of wax" at once. How about letting people that have placed say 4 or 5 caches, be able to list their new caches right away as opposed to having to have each one verified? My request: This little reply box could be a little bigger for long-winded, super-brilliant posts like this. Finally, my own feature requests... Download to PDA. Whether it is AvantGo or Plucker, I don't care. What I care to have is a PDA-friendly format and not just a copy of the geocaching.com search page. Links to/mention of complimentary sites or services. Examples: ClayJar's chat room, stats page, and GeoBuddy. -E -- N35°32.981 W98°34.631

  16. Brian's AvantGo indexes are great, but there are problems. AvantGo's terms of service now have a per site limit of 8 users, which Brian's index pages exceed. They are in danger of going away for this reason and others. As much as I love the layout, they aren't a long-term solution. The problem is that any data that doesn't come from Geocaching.com is going to run into problems. This is my #1 feature request and I've made it clear on at least a dozen occasions to no avail. If anyone is listening, I'll donate knowledge, programming time, and hardware to make it work. I just need access to the data. Is that clear enough? In the mean time, I'll use my cobbled PHP scripts and keep them to myself. -E -- N35°32.981 W98°34.631

  18. I'm in the middle of rewriting GeoBuddy from the ground up so that It's less Garmin-centric It comes from one clean source base It supports new formats easily Toward this end, I need to assemble your requests for input and output formats. Here's what I have so far... R/W Waypoint XML (i.e. XML .loc) W PCX5 Waypoints (Garmin MapSource) W PCX5 Tracks R MapSource tab delimeted R/W CSV (user specified) R/W? Street Atlas 9.0 ? Streets and Trips (is CSV enough?) R/W MacGPS ? GPSy ?MapSend R/W EasyGPS .loc (binary file) R NGS Data sheets ?/W OziExplorer Binary PDB format for Magellan Nav Companion I know I'm forgetting something... I would love to be able to read and write Garmin .mps files, but that isn't likely to happen so I'm going to just pretend that format doesn't exist. GeoBuddy 2.0 would support the current features like merging files and bulk mods. I'm also considering having it be the default reader for .loc files so that it could "accumulate" .loc files from geocaching.com and build them into one large output file that can be exported into your format of choice. Interested parties should go to http://www.geobuddy.com and sign up for the notification email list. If you have a format that you want me to consider, I need DETAILED information on what that format looks like. -E -- N35°32.981 W98°34.631
  19. quote:Originally posted by Jeepster:When I check out the Geobuddy web site there are many references to that "G" word. Before I spend too much time investigating, does Geobuddy work as well as you claim on Magellan units? I'm using a 315 and a Merigold. Would you be referring to "Garmin"? I have two Garmin units, but don't get too uptight--I'm not a fundamentalist Garminite. GeoBuddy exists precisely because Garmin couldn't or wouldn't do what I wanted--co-exist with other software. Will GeoBuddy work with your Magellan? Depends on what software you use. I am currently in the middle of redesigning and rewriting GeoBuddy from the ground up to be less Garmin-centric. Plan on seeing the first versions in beta around May 1. p.s. I'm actually considering a merigold for my next unit so that I can use SD memory instead of over-priced proprietary memory. -E -- N35°32.981 W98°34.631
