  1. Well, first, have at least 2 kids. Get a good lock & bearing & have kid A stand & face the cache on that bearing. Repeat for as many kids/locks as you can get. Wherever they are looking should be the right spot. I have 4 kids, so I can do ok if I really try.

My philosophy of life. He reminds me of how I used to be - I'd argue a point into details, ad infinitum. I still can, but what's the point, unless it's just friendly banter. The thing is, Woodster makes the same kind of mistakes I did/do. Good core idea, that can be worked thru, but runs down the tracks of details too much, or runs down the wrong details. I've found this just irritates people, so I try not to do it. Anywho, My opinion on time limits: I think that maybe there should be a way to directly report to the Aprover AND maintainer of a cache if you could not find, and you think it was b/c it's gone. Maybe a radio button when filling in logs (as I have no finds, this may exist & I don't know it). Notice this isn't a time limit, but rather a 'please check that I'm not just blind, but I really think I should have found it' gizmo. But I can also see where this would put a LOT of extra work on Approvers, tho not so much on maintainers. In short, there is no perfect solution, which may be what Woodster is looking for. Much less a perfect blanket solution. Man, I gotta find someone locally to talk to - I"m gonna drive y'all nuts!

NEWBIES pay attention to this common mistake with expecting sales agents to be expert about the store's entire inventory. This sounds like this was a purchase made with no research with exception to what the sales agent told you. Ooops. Is there a No Return policy with that store? How about a return to upgrade to a better (also read more expensive) unit? Most stores will go for that kind of deal as it becomes a win/win for both you and the store. It isn't Thales fault you were sold an older and cheaper model receiver (read that a Bill of goods) by the sales agent. There is no warranty in the world that covers that kind of customer decisioin unless you purchased by Visa/Master Card/American Express. (Be sure to read the Terms and Agreements.) It really comes down to Caveat Emptor. Do your own personal research before you purchase. You can't expect a sales agent to know everything about everything. They are really only expected to sell. There are plenty of web sites available to help with this. If you can't find it by Yahoo or Google, ask in these forums BEFORE you buy if you are still uncertain! You will gain an astounding number of opinions. Cheers! TL Big Quote, sorry. But this is something that happens when you buy ANYTHING! I get the feeling the Utedude (sorry for picking on you, but you opened the gate) would go buy a car w/o researching it, then complain that it didn't have airbags b/c it was made before they were common. I rarely buy something w/o doing a little a research, and I NEVER NEVER NEVER trust the salesman 'off the street'. If you really want to get a feel for a product, contact thier support staff - these are the guys who see what really breaks. I can't count how many times I've talked mechanics about cars, rather than sales ppl, or called tech support rather than the sales line. Usually phone support (well, educated phone spt) likes these calls b/c they are often quick, and no pressure. In short, if all you ever do is trust the marketing, you are destined for much disappointment.

  5. Here's my take on newbie sniping - and it has nothing to do w/ geocaching.com as I'm BRAND newbie here: This happens on ALL boards that last any time. Go look at slashdot.org for a really good example. Some of it is true sniping, usually unwarranted. Some, which seems warranted by the 'attitude' of the newbie, isn't. This is b/c many newbies are also new to netiquite(sp?), and don't know how to cause their text to carry emotion. ex: You look like a monkey. Vs You look like a monkey Completely diff if you take them out of context, or don't realize the two ppl know each other & joke back & forth this way. And then, it often works the other way - the newbie feels like he was chewed out b/c he doesn't know how to read personality into the reply he rcv'd. I apologize for the long post, but this is an area I have exp. in, even if I have 0 in geocaching.com
  6. quote:or am I just over-analyzing it? wouldn't be the first time. I recognize the over-analyzing because I do it. Of course, I'm a little more harsh - if you can't RTFM, you deserve what you get. But even that is said with a grin.
  7. quote:Originally posted by DeskJocky:Well you are supposed to do it 300 feet away from any trail, stream or water source (and cache too). You are supposed to cover it up and bury it 6 inches in the ground. A 4" trowl is recommend for this... Something you forgot - pee/poo on the DOWNHILL or DOWNSTREAM side of any of those things. Ask any ground-pounder or Scout how he manages & you'll get some inventive answers.
  8. quote:Originally posted by Rocket Man: quote:Originally posted by BrianSnat:National Geographic Topo! is considered by many to be the best. I use it and really like it. I just started using National Geographic Topo and I also like it. The swapping of the CD's is a pain though. Does anyone know how to put the CD data on the hard drive and have the program access it? I don't see any path settings in the registry like there are for the Mapsource Topo software.RM There are cd emulators out there. Mostly used for pirated software, but there are legal uses (such as yours) for them too. Do some searching via google or gamecopyworld.com to see what you can find.
  9. This sounds silly even as I type it, but has anyone put together a GeoCacheing Etiquite(sp?) FAQ? I've read the geocaching & extended geocaching, but they don't really cover etiquite. They do cover some things I would consider as obvious, but not the more subtle things such as RollTide's question. I know there is a FRS channel (2 I think) but when/how should it be used? Added later: Now I see why no FAQ - not enough experience in bumping into other Cachers. Ppl always groan at my questions - too many details wanted. 10. Thank you everyone for the suggestions! I will probably make use of bits & pieces for each. Thanks welch - I probably should have found that myself.
  11. I am brand new to geocacheing, although I've known about it for a while. Still waiting on a GPSr, but in the meantime I've been looking for cache's in my area (70818 zip). I found Hobbit Canoe, and the description/logs states there are more cache's in the park there. But I can't seem to find a way to search for the other cache's in the park. Is this a feature that hasn't been implemented yet? I would love to be able to do so, as it's a pay per entrance park. More bang for the buck, as it were, and with 4 children, I need all the bang I can get! At any rate, I'll find plenty of things and don't really mind if I end up paying the fee a few times. Thanks for any information! Tymanthius
