  1. I disagree. If there is a substantial portion of the cache there regardless of what it is, and I can field repair, I'll sign. For example, I frequently carry spare logs and a large freezer baggie. On rare occasions when I find everything but the container, I'll sign the log and put everything in the baggie until the CO can get out to repair it. If I find just the container and I have a replacement or makeshift log, I'll log it. If I don't have a replacement log I DNF.
  2. I would like to hear back from CoolCowCachers to understand their reasoning for the NA instead of NM. See the last entry on Falling Waters.
  3. Steven's Bday Cache hidden 03/22/2008, still active.
  4. Cute, but I did get it right in the body so it's obvious that I didn't tap the key hard enough when ranting from my mobile device.
  5. To answer you and the others expressing that same sentiment, no. My OP reads: I'm pretty easy going but one thing really bugs me, logs that read only: "Sent from my mobile device" I have no problem with SFMMD as a tag to a real log. Well let's see... $12 for an ammo box, a few more bucks for SWAG, time printing out logs and painting the ammo box, untold hours spent looking for a fantastic or unique spot to bring someone, physically lugging the ammo box out to the spot and finally spending the time to create a pleasing or fun cache page with pics. After all that someone comes out and gets another smiley, has a good adventure and probably learns something - yeah, it would be nice to know my effort has been appreciated more than just TFTC. When I start placing LPHs I'll accept any log I get. Happily. As DragonsWest noted upthread: That's reading quite a lot into what I said. You are being a bit over-sensitive. I never said that I believed any certain group doesn't deserve to play this game. The bit about 'cachers with no hides' refers the fact that I notice cachers who send in multi-sentence logs from the field with the LFMMD as a tag turn out to be cache placers as well. The logs that have only LFMMD tend to have no caches hidden. Sorry, it's just a fact. I have a feeling when you hide a cache yourself I think you'll understand a bit more. And next time please don't parse my posts. Wrong on both accounts. The title of the OP is correct: This is a rant against the trend of mobile loggers of not actually typing a log, instead just sending in the default message. I could care less if the SFMMD tag is on it or not. There is no anger towards mobile phone users at all. Since I got my iPhone I rarely hunt for caches with my GPSr.
  6. Yep, I found Cañada de la Salud on Sunday, 03 June 2007. It was placed on 05/12/2001 and is still going strong. It's an ammo box with a nice fat logbook. As I sat on the bench overlook I read about a beautiful day someone was having on 9-11 oblivious to the carnage happening on the east coast. It's still one of my faves.
  7. I would be willing to bet that it's more sloppiness than fibbing. Throw your challenges up and let them take their own course with respect to logging. If people cheat, they're only cheating themselves. Getting rabid and firing off emails seems a little over the top. And what's up with the all caps?
  8. Flickr is just as easy and free.
  9. Not sure if that's a joke or not but even that would be preferable. At least then I'd have the satisfaction that they worked at it a bit. Hi coralteach! I'll be looking forward to those logs.
  10. I'm generally not a ranter. I'm pretty easy going but one thing really bugs me, logs that read only: "Sent from my mobile device" These come almost exclusively from cachers with no hides. I put a lot of time, effort and money into placing caches. Would it kill you to at least add, "TFTC" so I know you appreciated it? Heck, I'd even gladly take a complaint... give me something.
  11. Yep. The date stays the same for every log (unless you manually change it) until you log out.
  12. On Bartlett Area Geocache for example it's because you logged it 'on' the 3rd of Oct. To remedy this go to 'edit log' and change the date to the 4th.
  13. Same here. I found some metal ones on sale once that I thought for sure were going to work - lasted a couple of months. The problem is the inferior O-rings in these things. I had to replace everyone I put out. I tossed the rest. I've had zero problems with these. Room for small trade items and about 75 cents after shipping. I always trade caps for real soda bottle caps as they have a gasket that the blue ones do not.
  14. I'm not going to get too involved here as others have made a case better than I could have but I would like to opine about this... Your attitude of entitlement is what stinks. Read the cache page before you go out. Unless then CO specifically mentions they have left a FTF prize you are expected to trade like everyone else. Kids or not.
  15. Great website. I like the clean simplicity of it. I'll submit some stuff to it when I get a chance.
  16. If you need help with this drop me an email, I'm a graphic artist. I can create the image and the code.
  17. It's probably the final of an unsolved puzzle. A quick note to your reviewer will clear it up for you.
  18. The shortest log I ever received was: ! Given the cache page, it was the best way to log and one of my favorites so far. I dislike logs that only say how far my coords are off.
  19. This one has been out for 2 days short of 10 months: It's actually not as light as this photo suggests. It's an iPhone photo in the bright sun but there is no degradation of the structure of the plaster.
  20. Really!! How have they held up to the weather? Did you treat them with anything to help with that? I ask because I made a small test rock once from Plaster of Paris, and while it looked awesome, it flaked and powered to dust after a few weeks in my back yard. I never did try it again. So far they have held up fine. I have one that has been out in the open since 8/23/2009 and it looks as good as it did the day I placed it. I usually spray them with a layer of urethane but not always. I'll go out this weekend and take some pics.
  21. I'm not a reviewer either, but it seems clear to me that mentioning a product by name does not necessarily indicate endorsing buying it. I can't imagine to OP would have a problem with his idea unless the body of the cache page reads (something like), "So come on down to Joe's Guitars and buy one!".
  22. I have made a few very convincing fake rock caches, not quite that big but almost. Here's my method: I use Plaster of Paris. First roll up some newspapers so you have some tubes about 3/4' thick. Wrap these around the lid so when the plaster cures there will be room to operate the lid mechanism (I'm usually pretty generous with these). Place the can upside down on some wax paper and mix up enough plaster to cover the whole thing. Then just pour it over the can until it's rock like in appearance. As it cures you can manipulate the surface to have texture but this isn't really needed, imo. After the plaster cures, turn the cache 'upside down' and cut away the paper exposing the lid. As for coloring, stain works MUCH better than paint. I usually use two colors - a light grey brown for the main body and a darker color for the edges and accents. Occasionally I'll hit it with a light shot of some brand of fleck stone paint. Sorry I don't have any pics, I'll try to get out this weekend and take some of the ones I have out. Hope this helps.
